and down the river bank a while. Bad
then noticed a canal that crossed the
rirer by a bijr viaduct I walked up
the canal bank and watched the koala
to by. They were loaded with coal.
Thirsting tor information, I finally said
to a boy who came along on a male,
wearing hi falbor'a trousers rolled np
to bit knee:
'Where U this coal going to, my
little manf
" To market, pop!' bo replied
"Then I watched more boats and
vol being ablo to still my louring for
knowledge, by and by 1 said to a man
who was working the tiller of one of
the boats:
" 'How many tons do yon carry F
M 'As manny, begorra, as any other
boat that roons this ilotcbl'
"Surfeited with information I re
turned to the river, i walked tip and
down, and presently I saw a pine pug,
' which was driven in the sand near the
water. There was a siring to it.
; " -Wonder what that is?' I said to
myself.
"Not being able to answer the ques
tion I went and pulled the peg out of
the sand. The string came out of the
water pretty hard, and 1 found that
three big bliick bass had got fast on it
in some way through the gills. There
was no mistake about it There was
the peg, there was the string, and thero
were the bass, alive and kicking.
" 'WoH, I says, that's certainly the
funniest thing 1 ever did see.'
"1 had heard of eels traveling over-
land from one pond to another; peroh
, that climb trees were old acquaintances
; of mine; catfish that swear at you like
troopers when yon take them from the
hook 1 had seen and heard. But bass
that could come out of the water, string
themselves like those, shove the peg iu
the sand, and cot back in the water
again, was more than I could explain.
'When I ao back home and tell this,'
I save, 'oeoplo won't oeliove me, and
then I'll feel bad.'
"So I looked around to see if there
was any one that could enlighten mo
: on this curious circumstance. I saw
ao one but a pious-looking old gentle-'
man, who was fishing aloug the river
quite a way below. As he was so in
tent on his sport that he seemed obli
vious to all around him, I didn't like
to disturb him in his area tie recreation,
and so walked back to tho hotel uu J
told the landlord that he might oooK
the bass for my supper. He did, and
- thev were good. After supper I went
down to get the train. There waa
Dious-lookinir, whito huired old gentle'
man there, with a fishpolo on his
shoulder. Uo seemed to be very mud,
As I srot on tho train I heard him S:iy:
" 'Yes, sir, by the jumping jimminy!
Three old suckers, and I'll . uive $6 to
.know what in became of 'em!'
" 'That man ain't as pious as he
.looks. X said as the train pulled out.
-And then the thing struck me all of
sudden, and I said I'd bet anythiug
that tho whito-hairod old man hat
found some bass that had strung them
selves just as mine had, and then he'd
.gone and lost 'cm some way or other.
"Snv. don't it beat tho Old Harry
how these funny things will keep hap

denoe at Hartford, Conn., filled with

- world. In his home at Hartford,
"Mark Twain's" workshop . is in his
billiard-room at Abe top of tlio house,
' and when bo gets tired of pushing the
- pen he rises and canes his muscles by
doing some scientific strokes with 'the
cue. A Hartford man told me the
other day ho was calling on "Twain"
In this room at one timo during the
past year, when the fire in the grate
threw some sparks out upon the floor.
