The Mecca Oil Wells. Our readers wiU recollect tbat some three months since we gave an account of a visit to the Mecca Oil District. At that time the first well was being sunk, by Messrs. Bonnell. Jor dan 4 Co., and though the indications were ithat oil would be found in paying quantities, atill it was not regarded as a fixed fact , and .those who were exploring were looked upon by ihe public, generally, as half crazed adveutur .era who were spending their money and labor very foolishly. Since Utat time, we have been .almost daily "receiving accounts of the progress of the investigations, which were generally fa vorable, and on Friday we revisited the spot and saw that Tery great changes had been made. IVe have no wish to add to the excitement which is already sufficiently high, but w ill state what came andcr our owa obaerration. The well of Bounell. Jordan t Co., directly at Powers' corners, w as the first experiment. Here a small steam engine has been at work for aaearly four eeks. It pumps about a barrel df water per minute, the water is carried into a large Tat; the oil riava to the top of the water, and the surface 'oil and water passes over into . another vet, wiuie the water ia drawaoff below, yrom this vat the surfaoe -water end oil passes i anto another, and another, and after again un- -dergoing the 'aepcraung process, into a fourth wat or tank, from whence it is drawn into bar- ; mAr tur market. The yield in-ia. wuu - j .oil at this well is about five barrels of 40 gal lons each, everj? twenty-four hours. The oil is of a brown or dark yellow color, and has ong though not very unpleasant odor. The " -depth of iltis.well is 95 feet, sue of bore 5 i hea. Except tlie first ten feet from the sur face, it is rock the whole oi.tanee, mostly rrev and white aand stone. Sext we visited the well of Messrs. Rein Jiart Donner, some twenty rods farther nortb. ' At this well the proportion of oil to the water is much greater, less water being brought AUie surface than at th first mentioned well, while the Yield of oil is much larger. Here tbe average product is sixteen barrels per day; atnd over twenty barrels have been raised twenty-four hours. The oil is of a dark irreen ceolor. quite different in appearance .u'.V nhtaiiiod at the other well. The aanvt proees of scperating the oil from the wat -er is used as before described. That it is ' imperfect is evident from tlie fact that in -ditch where tbe waste water runs off from -rats, oil is seen floating on tlie water, and though the oil is gathered from the ditch by the road aide near the vats, from 53 to 100 callous - been skiiued from the water iu tlie ditch, rods oelow, by a small boy who was working - on his owo account. The nett profit of well to Uie proprietors, cannot be loss $100 per day, and probably very considerably xeeeds tbat amount. Hull 4 Co-.ou X. 'tt'ilber's farm.have found oil at the depth of 47 feet. They have an oa the ground. and will commence pump ing in a very few days. - Lowrev, Mattocks 4 Dickinson have to the depth of CI foct. and have a fine promise of oil. To gratify out curiosity, they let their aand pump (a tin tube 3 or 4 inches aiatueter and some four feet in length, a valve at the lower end,) and drew it up between one and two gallons of oil iu it. that instrument alone they could raise at rate of from twenty to forty gallons of oil hour. They also have a new engine on n.t and are Bearlv readr to commence t pumping. TS"m. Smith after finding oil at the depth 47 feet, fas we are informed) sold his well tr ether with his lease of 2 acre of land, . 2.4!)0. to a Mr. Kerr, of Pa. - X. W. Palmer, F. Bice.'T. M. and Abell have a well on the east side of the tlie boriug of which they finished while were looking a. and drew up oil freely their aand pump. They hava a fine of oil. The company consisting of Gen. Curtis Jesse Reeves of Sharon, Pa., A. Andrews J. Messersmith of Vienna, and John S. King have leased aeveral hundred acres of land the vicinity, which they are sub-leasing mall lots. They have an office for this pose on the spot. They have sunk four or wells and found oil; at one or more of these will commence pumping, shortly. Thompson. Dunean & Co., have found aad have fair prospect of a good yield. W. rattenceU and D. Metealf of Bristol, interested in this company.) Besides these, many other individuals ' companies whose names wc have not space numerate, are at work. Within tlie of two miles, taking Powers' corners as centre, not lews than one hundred wells len bored, in one half of which oil in more leas quantities has been focd, and one of which, at least, promise to be paying The oil seems to be in veins or seams of aaod rock, aa there are instances where live Wn f.tnk to the .i.-j.tli ..f 13 ft.
