"We refer to the centennial anniversa ry at the residence of Mre P. L. Sut liff, on High Street, of the One Hun- lredth Birthday of her much respect ed lather, Mr. Joseph' Marvin. Esq. ZMany of the immediate relatives, and a large number of friends and citizens were present, and participated iu a .hearty," social intermingling, and shared the cordial hot pi tali iy of the ..wenerable hosts and : relatives on this uispiciou8 and remarkable occasion. JThe company .assembled'in the af- ternoon, and perhaps a larger num- ber of onr-cHieens never met togath r .on an occasion more uniformity enjoyable alike to old,' middle aged and yotiDg. . j Of course the central figure of tie and of individual interest, waa the venerable centenarian, Mr. vj&larvm, wuo . nan me extraordinary "privilpge of receiving the congratula- Mr. ed M. in of life our by tkns ef so many frienda, on his one -Tiundredth birthday. Tne old gen ' tieman would have passed for a man of eighty, rather than one hundred winters, and it was hard to realize the fact that we were taking the hand and conversing with a man older than the. peclar&UoB off Americas Inde pendence, who was old enough to have heard the battle roar, of Banker Hill. Yet such was the fact, Mr. .Marrla was born en the 26th . day of March, f 772. " He "has come down to us from a generation ' long In the grawQ lit is the pri jllege of few to be permitted to take by the hand an old patriarch who antedates the Re vol u - tionary War !. . . But to return more particularly to the special proceedings. -When .the the company had generally gathered, and preparatory to partaking of re , freshmento, the Throne, of Orea Fas addressed by Itev.Jf. P. Bail v.' in language very suitable to the occasion. Then Mr. Marvin and a number of bis friends were seated around a table spread with a cloth off of which the immortal "Washington had enjoyed the good things of life four genera tions ago. After the discussion of eatables Gen. Crowell, an old friend of Mr.' M s, and a former citizen of this place, waa called upon to speak, which he did in a manner so felicitous as ren dered it not the least interesting feat ure of this memorable gathering. The General said that he hoped the choice of one to give expression to the sentiments which all feit in union on this remarkable occasion, would have fallen upon one worthier, or at least upon one" less liable toembarass ment. than himself, for rarely had he felt more of it than now. It was almost with a sense of self-depreciation that one contemplated such a life as that of his venerable friend, both in itself and in connection with the aiajesty of the events crowded into the century which he had lived : had seen the bon-fires lighting up the neavens, bad beard the bells and guns, which announced the Declara tion of Independence, and doubtless remembered our after glorious strug gle with a foreign foe. He had wit nessed the formation of oar constitu tion aud the solution of the grand problem of self-governtiient. He had witnessed the effects thereof on the tyraniesand dynasties of theold world. In fact he might say that the changes his aged friend had witnessed during the century he completed to day, were more remarkable In their influ ence on the destinies ef mankind, than those of any other since the Christian era. He then remarked upon the rarity of the occasion, the like of which he had never before witnessed, though himself had leached threescore and ten, and such one as- perhaps hone within the sound of his voice would again see. There was hit aged friend himself, centenarian, hia children, his chil dren's children, and even the childish treble of the fourth generation was not wanting to round off the rarity of the occasion Into all completeness. He had known' Mr. M, for many years, and in all. the relations of life had been blameless and honorable. The recollection of hia relations wth him and others whom he saw here were among the most pleasant hia life. Mr. Parmalee, of Ravenna, theu read a short poem written by Mr. M. himself in view of the occasion.which as follows : Friends, who surround me. 'tis to you. (This yearof eighteen hundred aeventy-rwo,) yon, dear friends, I speak. Tls truth to say, count one hundred years this very day. Bom March twenty-sixth (my story, friends. Is true). seventeen hundred seventy-two ; This can I prove from papers old. And declare 'tis truth, pure as gold. 6tia waiting by the way, my race Is nearly done, one step behind my setting sun ; Vet why should we murmur or complain t from our God in Chritt. redemption cau.e. Why do I wait? I ask in wonder why T death is our appointment men must die! .Then followed letters from absent relations and friends, expressing their regrets for absence and congratulation. Mr. Joseph Marvin, Jr., who is him self sixty-five years of age, then gave aome very interesting details of bis father's early life," which we regret inability to give entire, and must therefore content ourselves with a mere outline He attributes his fath er's astonishing loagevirv, and his athletic power, which was great, to temperance and hia diet. In 1S15, at the age of forty-three, when news came of the treaty of peace be tween England and this country, he for onceslightly mellow, to testify joy., and while returning home with hia companions, was challenged wrestle by a man of twenty-five whom Mr. Marvin's mantle as champion wrestler was supposed to have fallen. They took hold, and almost instantly the adventurous youth lay flat on his back star-gazing. Marvin's brother was also addict to athletic sports, and could clear forty-four feet one way and forty- three the other, at a hop, step and jump. At the age of eighty two Mr. rode on horse-back sixty-six miles one day. and that day the hottest an extremely hot summer. . Many other incidents of his early as a pioneer might be given, but space will not permit. After Mr. Marvin Jr's., remarks were concluded, there was exhibited a paper of date of 1764, and a specimen of penmanship one of Mr. Marvin's early friends, ninety-two years old. General T. J. You always bars dune before you commenced lo make iron beam vou told farmer they ware good for nothing, sod that you wore buying them in scrap every day. why don't you make beam plows to day ? whsra is your Victor ? Alas, gone to iu long borne, where Iron Beam Plows ara last traveling. ray to yon plainly that your mouldboard no higher, your coulter no hotter steel, and Point no wider and your Plow not half good metal or near r-e nicely finished orin way like our Gawanda Plow. You doubt cir statement about lbs amount plows sold. We can show you sales of thousand plows in two years, and you you never made and srld 160 Iron P'ows in your lives, so we consider trade of as trifling importance as we tbe proprietors. You talk about selling nearly every town on tbe Kaserve as well Western Pa., and you nevet made Iron Plows enough to spare one to the town for tbe Reserve alone. At to tbe quality points, we admit men in the butinesi SI) ought to know how to make a Plow but are very torry to tay they never as good a one at the Gowanda. and only attribute tbe fact to tbe ignoe you talk of. About tba guilt we pro fur to bsve il on lbs beam to having it con cealed in the bush to waylay farmers on a and then laugh because they ttuck him a bogus plow. You think tba talss rather airy we suppose, snd thoughts comparing with your sales of about 00 par At to duplicate parts there it not a orpirl not even a bolt, which you can not get at anytime at our tloret All larmert wtnlofa plow, look them both over, and. will buy Gowtnda every time, Iu mould it not chiselled off. it it nicely ground polished, and you will not have to work day before il wt'l scour.
