July 12, 1873. CHURCH HILL tok tt,e pPf r" ,he ofth9 kePl P Are In the rear ; that the only way for work nave InKnlm to maintain their rights wss to Editor Chboniclb : We have to chronicle, since our last communication, the death of Cyrus Nelson, of Loy's Cor ners, in this township. Mr. Nelson was a promising young man 19 years of age the son of very worthy and estimable parents. He had not an enemy In the world ; he possessed a superior mind and would doubtless have lea his "foot prints on the sands or time" had he been spared. His is the tenth child the par ents have buried; and the only surviving daughter, a beautiful ; and interesting young lady 21 years ofsge, Is now in fee ble health. It is said that in war, parents bury their children, but in peace, chil dren bury their parents. Alas i this has not been the lot or the unhsppy parents or this family. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson have tbe heartfelt sympathy of the whole neighborhood. They are people of sur passing virtue and goodness, and in their bard lot the words appear but too appli cable t There is a destiny In this strange world, wnicn on aecrees an undeserving oower. Let school aaea tell us why." Another of our worthy townsmen, W. B. Leslie, whose illness I mentioned in my Last letter, departed this life on the 1st instant, and was buried on the 3rd. Mr. Leslie leaves an aged mother and an only sister, to mourn his loss. Deceased s man of great wealth, being the owner of the famous Church Hill coal lands, from the royalty of which his in. come sveraged In the last three years folly thirty-five thousand dollars per an num. Dr. Walker, the partner of W. B. Les. lie in the Exchange Bank of Church Hill, has fully recovered from his late illness snd Is at his business again. The Good Templars of this place, who have a flourishing Lodge, hsd a fine pic nic in Zenaa Kline's grove on the 4th of July, and the glorious fourth wss cele brated with becoming honors. A fine dinner, plenty of lemonade, and genera goad cheer were the order of the day. In the evening the Lodge held an open meeting at which songs, recitations and speeches were made. Mr. Zenas Kline spoke or the evils of intemperance, and of the necessity of prohibiting the nefa- rious liquor traffic by the most strin ent legislation. Mr. Andrew Roy spoke to' e losses which the worklngmen yearly suffered by drunkenness, and abandon the dram shop. that being the source of , all mis ery, and auuering and degrcdation of the worklngmen of the nation. A mass meeting of worklngmen is called for Monday evening, July 14, for political purposes, at Church Hill. There Is strong talk of placing a Labor Reform ticket in the field this fell. Tbe miners appear to be abandoning the trades un ion and organising for political purpo- onouia tne Burners omnize as grangers and the whole unite on a work ing men's ticket, they will demand that a hard fisted son of toil shall represent Trumbull Cousty in the Legislature next winter. Although were is out lew of them at present, vney are au first rate fellows. We have BO doubt VOU will bear from w casienally. We hope they will reap a wucrauouan can soe when they are through with their misrion of mercy here. M. CORTLAND. An Hour Among our Engines. Editor Chboniclk : I am just from the screech, snd puff, snd whis, and rumble, and buzz of the liveliest lot of engines in seventeen counties ; snd now while my ears are struggling for their usual equilibrium.,! will try to tell your readers what these machines (I mean the enginee) are doing. I began my visit on Broadway be cause my courage is best in the morning. and here is the shop of N. A. Ellis, man ufacturer of nail kegs and general Coop er's work: Seyen hands are employed at this shop who turn off, in round num bers 8000 kegs, 200 barrels, snd custom work to meet the demand ; all amount ing to $G,GO0 during the past year. Adjoining these premises is the shop of W. M. & W. F. Meek, manufacturers of wooden pumps. These young men, everyway worthjr of confidence, have Just begun business jnd we wish them success. Passing up Market street we find the unpretentious but busy little factory of Mr. L H. Spellman, who man ufactures keg-heading exclusively. Jus across the street is the shop or Herrick A Richards, manufacturers of carriages snd buggies. In this line, in general repairs, and in making themselves gen erally useful, these gentlemen are al ways st work with an industry and en ergy that is crowning them with success. From here we walk up East Main st., until we hsve left the town somewhat in the rear, snd then we come upon tbe factory of Barnes A Had sell. This was formerly the factory or Barnes A Son manufacturers or measures, cheese box es, Ac. The son, E. E. Barnes, has sold his interest to Mr. Geo. Hadsell, former ly of Hadsell A Camp, and has bought Mr. Hadsell's interest in the hardware store. This has been a lively firm and the new firm we expect to be none the less so. Mr. Hadsell's known abilities to drive whatever his hand finds to do, together with his gentlemanly snd busi ness qualities assure us that his part will not be lacking ; while those who know the locomotive energy and lightning speed of R. D. Barnes need not be told that anything to which he applies him self will be s succops. The products of this factory go chiefly to Cleveland, Cin cinnati and St. Louis, frou which cities alone the orders far exceed their ability to supply. The following presents the amount of business done during the past year. Number of measures manufac tured, 10,000 ; number of cheese boxes. 8000 ; number of riddle frames, 10,009. Returning toward town, on the north west bank of Walnut Creek stands one or the busiest mills I ever entered. This is the saw and planing mill of J. HAM. C. Post. These men are constitutional workers ss well as fine machinists, and business men characterized by prompt ness, precision snd courtesy. This mil1 snd the factory last mentioned present the best running machinery I have ever seen in motion. No rattling and pound ing, no breaking, no stopping. This mill hss stood still but three dsys in the past year. I was unable to obtain the exact amount of business done here, but an approximation to the true figures is, in round numbers, one million feet of lumber sawed out and three hundred and fifty thousand feet planed, or planed and matched. . . A little further down the stream is the flouring Mill belonging to the same firm : also their ware-house in : which they keep a large stock of lime, plaster, salt, and grass seed. One would expect that this mill, un der the same successful management, would present a more than ordinary perfection of order and arrangement, and such is the case. ' Every thing; is wanner with economy. Evpry t.hinar is in a neatavna omeny condition, ana no pains are spared to produce an amount and quality of Hour unsur passed by any mm in the county. This mill having but two run of stones and running twelve hours per day, has ground out about 66,000 bushels of grain in the past year. We walk down ou tns banks of the beautiful Walnut Creek, lined with choice flag-stone quarries, to a point one half mile south of town, and here in the valley and beneath the spread ing branches of a grove is our cheese factory. This factory is situated over the stream so that all the waste is im mediately carried away. It is sup plied with water from two springs is suing from the bank upon either side, and presents withal a cool, clean and cozy appearance. It is under the bu perintendancy of Mr. John Muscell, assisted by an efficient corps of expe rienced cheese makers. Tbe superior quality of cheese being manufactured here this summer sufficiently attests their ability in this business. They are receiving the. milk from nearly 800 cows, and are making from 43 to 47 cheese daily, averaging 42 Ss each. Upon a whole. In lookijg over our manufactories one is struck with their unpretentiousness, yet with their bu sy activity and general thrift. The fact is, we have one of the best points for manufactories of all kinds in this part of the State. Water is plenty, land is cheap, building material of all kinds in abundance, and a far-reaching country rich and populous, all around us to be supplied from this point We are ianeed of a spoke and bent-work factory, and a woolen fac toryi And in all my acquaintance, I know of no better location ; and should any one propose erecting such factories here, I think they would meet with a hearty co-operation from oar citizens generally. To aid yon in something of an opinion of the work done here and in this vicinity, I pre sent the following figures relative to the railroad business done here, which have been kindly furnished me by agent, mr. 1. xi. iioister "Statement of business done at Bacon sburg, O., Station, year ending May 81st, 1873: Freight forwarded 9,061,203 pounds.
