No thing is more to le admired than a fine set of natural teeth and the possessor is more to be envied if they can be retaiued during life. Hut uu fortunately they fall a prey to disease, and we are frequently obliged to resort to art to restore the lost organs. Few sciences have made more rapid pro gress, and gained a stronger hold on the people than dentistry has in the past forty years, at which time artificial teeth were al most entirely unknown, anil the best attempts at artificial substitutes were hut unreasonable failures. Human teeth that graced the lips of the d.-ad were made to adorn the mouth of the living. The teeth of animals, tho toeth of the elephant and hippopotamus were used to re-tore decaying beauty, but these like the nntur.il organs were perishable. X.-xt came porcelain teeth, at first rude indeed, but far superior to the'r Ivory pre decessors. The introduction of porcelain teeth marked a new era in dentistry, and af ter years of experimenting they were brought to their present state of perfection. Ivory curved into the shapo of the gums formed the first base to which teeth were attached. This was substituted by the met als, gold at last proving the best adapted to the purpose. Evea this metal was found to lie objectionable on account of the galvanic action excited, aud the accumulation and tween teeth and plate, and its average dura bility being only about eight years. Rubber pistes were more extensively used than any other material, but the sulphur and mercury entering so largely iuto its com position has, in many instances so ser;ously repoired the health of the wearer, that mituy of the first physicians have con demned its use, and our most eminent den tists have entirely discarded it, and are urg ing tho profession to abandon its use. Oc casional" cases of salivation have occurred, and sore aud gums, and breaking out of. the lips are so frequent as only to need atten tion to be called to the fact to cause it to be very commonly observed. Porcelain plates arc entirely free from any of the above objections, being per fectly pure with teeth and plate united in one inseparable piece, having no unsightly joints, rivalling the natural teeth In beauty, and being absolutely imperishable. The object of every one should be to pre serve the natuial teeth If possible; but when we aie obliged to resort to supply their loss, the matter of economy as well as the important consideration of health and and comfort, should be consulted. Every wearer of these plates gives them the most unqualified endorsement, aud they only need to be seen to recommend them more strongly than words can possibly do. A call at the ofllce of Dr. Douda who alone manufactures them in this county, will convince the most incredulous of the truth of the above statements. Sc'iijlxlso Jt Hekbuuck. Haxton's incapacity. The firemen bad rights which the Council was bound to respect, and vice versa. Mr. J. A. Saxton would like to hear more Rpecific objectionable charges against T. W. Saxton than are set forth in sir. uuerly s communication. The subject was referred to the Fire De partment Committee. Mr. Saxton, in the matter of the claim of ex-Treasurer Feather for his per centum lor collecting and disbursing the city funds sta ted that he had not conferred with the bal ance of the Committee, but he was of opinion that Mr. Feather could not be enti tled to fees in this case und-r tho law that an officer's salary cannot be increased or di minished while in office; thatj there were responsible men who would act as City Treasurer without any compensation, more than the use of the funds. Mr. Scmefer informed Mr. Saxton that it was a penitentiary offense to loan the public treasury funds, and he could produce the law. Mr. Saxton said he was aware of tlie law, but it was often violated. The Committe on Streeta was Instructed to have removed the hay scales from the Public Square to the east end of the En- trine House lot on .itfliUi 6treet, anu it tne scales are found imperfect, to purchase new ones. To tho Hon. tlie City Council of the City ot Canton. The undersigned in behalf of the Washington Fire Company, and ot Fire Department generally, of the city of Canton, having read the pro ceedings of your honorable body of Monday evening, Sept. 21st, feels, in duty to himself, and the fire depart ment generally to address you. And he feels the more emlwldened to do so from the fact, that he has been Cap tain of the Washington Fire Compa ny for the last fifteen years, and dur ing all that time has always been present at every fir e doing his duty as a fireman, and it is reasonable to suppose that in fifteen years of active service as a fireman he would acquire some little knowledge of the wants and feelings ot firemen. At a former meeting of youi honor able body, Thos. W. Saxtou was ap pointed Cief Kniriueer of the Fire Department of Canton. The under signed, nor the firemen generally do not wish to enter into a discussion of me ngni oi your iiouoruuie uuuy, 10 i select tho Chief Dneineer of the fire department, nor does the firemen of Canton seek to dictate what the coun cil shall do. The firemen, the council, and the citizens generally, have a common interest in the preservation of the property of thecitizeus of Can ton, and if harmony and good feeling doee not prevail among those who are to be actively engaged in the preser vation ot property. Great loss to the propeaty holders might be the result. We desire in thiscommunication to indicate to your honorable body, that in the appointment of Mr Saxton as Chief Kngineer, great violence has been done to the feelings and wishes of the firemen offauton. And in our judgment, great injury to the property holder, as we cannot get harmonious action, in the preservation of property with Mr Saxton at the head of the fire department,"' and as proof of the assertion here made, I will state that when Mr Saxton was captain of the Kescue company, there was an eternal wrangling and discord between the ltescue and Washington comnanies, which greatly impaired the usefulness of both, but when Mr Dunbar succeeded to the captaincy of the Rescue company, the two compa nies could then work in perfect har mony. I do not here assert whether this was through the efforts of Mr Saxton to breed discord, or the efforts Of Mr Dunbar to cultivate harmony and good feelings among the members cf the different fire companies. Such at leait wrs the result. I will now cite you to the action of the firemen of this city, to the men who have for a long series of years, labored with their utmost exertion and u." we think with as much success as any city of like facilities in staying the ravages of the great destroyer of property. At the monthly meeting of the ashington J; ire Co., held on the 5th inst. 1 informed my company of the appoinsment by the Council ot Mr Saxton as Chief Engineer, and soon discovered that there was great ob jection to th appointment, as it was agreed that while Mr Saxton was captain of the Rescue Co. there seemed to be a disposition in him to breed discord between the different fire companies. strenuous efforts to keep down the feeling of discontent that I suid ex hibited, and then proposed, that on the Monday evening following, being tne 7tn instant, ana tne annual meet ing of all the fire companies, I would at that meeting propose the names of I fTi 7 ,1 T T-v. 1 uur V,uuoar I uul" '"ruier cttpiaius 01 1110 rvescue, in as Chief Engineer of the fire depart ment. At said meeting a vote of the Washington nre company waa taken, wmcn resulted in tne unanimous choice of Mr. Iunbar, Mr. Saxton not receiving a vote. Tnere was a like result in the Rescue com pan v. With this result and. and the strong expression of opinion of the firemen of this city.we leei tnat the city coun cil must see that the best interests of the property holders of tho city of Canton, will induce to appoint Mr. Dunbar. v e know him to be & vig ilant and active fireman and gentle man, and that the interest of the proberty holder would be safe iu his hands. Iu the published proceedings of your honorable body, there are a few items and expressions that I feel, in duty to the firemen, called upon to notice, we nave always looked upon Mr. Schaefer af the firemans friend. And he has been grossly deceived, he has been informed that firemen standing as such, have made use the longuaee attributed to them. "We will do as we dam xilease," nor do the firemen wish to treat the council as "Bovs and Boobies," as was remark ed bv Mr Schaefer. The firpmpn Rtill entertain, the same kindly feelings towards Mr bcnaner, tnat tney have a alw ay3 uone, anu we cannot nut De- set the of lieue that when Mr. Schstefer is made aware of the unanimity of feeling existing among the firemen, as to the ruan who should rule over them, win at once conclude, tnat the action of the council has been rather prema ture, ana mat that the wishes and feelings of the firemen should have been consulted, and that for the good of our citizens generafJy, it is best for the council to retrace a stey, as think:, tasen m a wrong direction. son is made, to say. "Now the com the In the same proceeding,Mr. Ander- up panies have gone to work, and elected a man in defiance of the council." Mr. Anderson is a man of too sense to seriously think that the companies intended to defy the coun cil, in tneir action, in indicating man of their choice no such disrespect was intended. They only' desired show to the council that they had plaed a man over tnem as chief, who, (had their wishes been consulted) could scarcely have obtained a vote I LvUlU OtaA,VIJ 111' I V W A U .U t f( th ruvtnn an now. hna-mA A : I 1 . . . - ' . . aware of that fact, we do not think the honorable council will act "Boobies and Children." but as wise A.
