This beautiful but somewhat an i tique residence,, which. ,has nothing in : common witb a castle, is, use tne xium i boldt family, intimately associated with ! the history of the House of Bradenburg. Even in the time of the Electors ,it had ! been used as a hunting station; Freiherr, i Alexander George von Humboldt, the father of Alexander and Wilhelm, was a Major in the Seven Years', War, and ! afterward became Adjutant to Ferdinand I pf ' Braunchweig. " In this, capacity he j was' often sent with oral communications : to Frederic,, who, through his frankness ; and honest bearing, finally conceived a great liking to him. He appointed him : to tbe post or valet ae cnamore, ana ai ; ter the old Major had resigned this office, t Frederic always made it a point to visit j him once a year at, Tegel. ! Mai or von Humboldt and his most '. amiable and beloved lady had two chil- : dren, Wilhelm. and .Alexander., . While : sitting on the old oaken .bench before the castle let us turn' back the ' mind's : eye to the year 1778.- The old Frienerr f was seated, on a beautiful afternoon in ;June, in the garden. Beside him sat his estimable lady, with the two sons, . Wilhelm, a cheerful,' robust boy of ten, : and Alexander, a weakly and . modest child of eight. Before them stood the i children's preceptor, Kunth, who had just finished bis romantic account of his i visit to Frederic in Potsdam, and how I he, as a poor, wronged stranger was re : ceived and treated by His Majesty. . But, ! as if approached by an apparition, what ; was their surprise and astonishment, as ; Frederic himself came quietly andstate ! ly around the little winding arbor, and now stood before them. The King bad ; left his equipage outside the gate, and i had approached quietly, in order to sur ! prise the happy company, and now stood ' leaning on his cane with a friendly smile land greeting for the little .circle. The 'conversation now turned to a variety of . subjects, and all were charmed at the wit and quaint remarks .of the . king, jWhen suddenly he turned to little Wilhelm, and ; said, i," What is his name?" "Wilhelm von Humboldt !" , replied the latter.. "How old?" "Ten years." "Then he now can become ' a i cadet," said the King. At this Wilhelm ' shook his head, when the King exclaim- ed: "What ! He will not be a soldierl" j "No," answered the boy, trembling ;?'one can also De great in otner things." : "What would he be then?" Baid the j King. "A man of learning," answered ; Wilhelm. . "A bookworm then," replied ' the King, aud after some reflections on the loss of his literary friends, he turned to little Alexander and addressed him thus: "Name?" , Alexander von Hum boldt," "Alexander?" said the King beautiful name it reminds me of the conqueror of the world." Then looking the embarrassed iiuie Alexander in the face, he continued: "And will he also ,be a conqueror oi the world?". After some hesitation, the latter replied: ''Yes, Majesty, tut with my head; I should like to visit all countries, know all lan guages and peoples, sail on all rivers, stand on all mountains, and, in fact, see and know everything. That is the how I would like to conquer the world, Ma jesty." "Bravo!" cried Frederic. I Leaving our various reflections, how ever, let us now enter the Castle, and through the kindness of the housekeeper, examine the fine and rare statuary, with which its antique halls are . decorated. The pieces are not numerous; but one may well suppose that a man of the im mense classical culture of Wilhelm von Humboldt would only select the fairiest gems, as the companions of his dear, romantic home.'"' On entering we observe in the main, j hall a beautiful statue of Hope with a Lotos; but while lingering on its beauties we are invited into tbe drawing room, whose classic walls have seen so many of the great and learned. In the corner, on entering, stands a mas terpiece, on which one might gaze for hours. It represents... Venus showing Mars her wounded hand. But our time is limited. Soon two doors are thrown open, and in a little inclosure we behold two . Torsi a youth ; and Bacchus. Though nothing is preserved but two faded trunks, one is still - de lighted ; at ' their exquisite" har mony ' of form, . They were dis covered," in Rome, in 1808. Passing feeveral works of minor beauty, we come to the bust of Medusa, a curious copy, in porphyry, which was presented' to Wilhelm von Humboldt by Pope Pius VIL.and whose novel expression, both in feature and through the material iu which it is molded, attracts great attention from all visitors. ' There is another work, a copy of Clytia of which the original is in the British . Museum, which forms a curious, etudy ; for lovers of statuary. The bust is set in the cup of a flower. Then the author has entirely departed from the Grecian in this case of the nose and lips, which gives to the ohysiosmo my an expression as beautiful as it is original and singular. Beside, this', at tbough orly, a on. all Grecian busts, the hair is continued low and straight on the. forehead, which gives' to the hole the strangest cast imaginable.. ',. , But gladly as we , wonld jfefer . to the beauties of Ranch's statue of Wilhem von Humboldt's daughter and to the cu riosities ot art and : nature which are here' deposited,' time forbids, and we must give way to the impatience of, the amiable lady, who has so kindly con ducted us through these classic halls and who. is waiting for, the customary - ' WMW U JM. The Richest Banker in the World. . At all times in the haunts of business, especially on 'Change, Nathan Roths child was a marked object. There he stood day after day, leaning against his pillar, on the right hand, entering from Cornhill. He was a monarch on 'Change and the pillar in question may have been his throne, but in this case a solid one of granite. . -No consideration would in duce him to do business anywhere else, so devoutedly attached was he to that particular spot. There, with his back resting against the pillar, and with note twrO- 1 J I 1 I uw". in uauu, no was oiwayo. iu utj eeen-. during the usual hours of business, en- tering into transactions of great extent with the merchants and. capitalists of all countries. - i. Little would a stranger who chanced to see the money potentate of the world standing on the spot in question have.! fancied, from his personal appearance, what an' important influence he exerted on the destinies of Europe. , No one could be more unprepossessing than he. just such a man as boys in the street would have thought a fine subject for a- "lark;" unless, indeed, they had been deterred by the lowering .expression or' aspect of his countenance. He always looked sulky,' never indulged in a smile, nor even relaxed the rigidity of his mus-'l cles. . In . private his" intimate friends mention that he occasionally made an effort to smile, but never with any mark-' ed se'ecess, bis smiles' at best .being, hardly more than a species of spoiled grin. - ' . - . His countenance wore a thoughtful as pect, but his ; whole appearance was rather that of a stupid, clownish-like farmer of the humbler class. His fea tures were massy. His features seemed to be huddled together without anything; like regularity in them. His nose had a good deal of the cock-up form. His mouth was rather large, and his lips thick and prominent. His forehead was more than an average bight, considering the altitude of his face. His hair had something of a darkish hue, and was gen-1 erally short. . His complexion was pale.t except where it was slightly tinged with color by the weather. He was short and thick ; though, being considerably un-. der the general hight, it is possible his pot-belly and corpulent aspect generally may have made him appear shorter than he really was. He usually was to be seen in a great coat of a dark brown color; and as he paid little attention to personal habiliments, his tailor had difficult customer to please that is, in respect to taste and style, though not on the question ot price. ' - It was one feature in. Nathan's con duct, when on 'Change, that he never,, except when engaged in business, en--tered into any conversation whatever with any of the multitude surrounding him. ... - There he stood, apparently as deeply lost in thought, and as melancholy a countenance as if he had been alone in the "vast wilderness of shades" referred to by Cowper, or been the "Last Man" described by Campbell. Whether hisP reserve was constitutional,, or whether,' it arose from the pride of purse, or whether from the matters which must have been occupying his mind, or from the conjoint operation of these three, can only be surmised.
