The Banker of Antwerp and his Mysterious
Good Fortune.
In 1814 there lived at Antwerp a banker
who bad a passion for speculation, but who
invariably was nnsnrceMful. This ill-luck
became proverbial ; bis afl'airs full into con
fusion, and all Antwerp looked to see him
become bankrupt and retire from the pre
cincts of the Exchange, when, suddenly, his
luck changed and he gained in every opera
tion he undertook as invariably as he had
formerly loft. No matter bow suddenly or
how violently the funds went up or down in
Paris, London, Vienna, or elsewhere, the
Antwerp banker was alwajs a gainer by
every movement of tbe money-market, no
matter how capricious. In the course of
two years he realized a large fortune, quitted
Antwerp with his wife and family, and es
tablished himself fur the rest of his life in a
charming country seat, wher he abandoned
himself to the delights of rural existence and
the cultivation of flowers, which latter
branch of horticulture he pursued with an
abiding enthusiasm worthy of a Dutchman.
The, electric telegraph was unknown at
the period in question, and the clumsy sig
nals by which statesmen contrived to com
municate with one another were only worked
by the heads of the Stute, and for their own
behoof; and Antwerp puzzled its brains for
some time in vain efforts to ascertain by
what mysterious art the ex-banker had man
aged to turn the tide, and to win over to his
interests the favors of the blind goddess who
bad hitherto been so decidedly against him.
In these speculations upon the changed fate
of tbe speculator, Antwerp simply lost its
trouble; nor was it until several years after
ward that the seeming mystery was ex
plained. It had been noticed in Antwerp as a sin-
tular fact that two drivers of stage-coaches
elonging to that city had made, during the
luckv period of the banker's career, fortunes
which, in proportion to their means, were as
considerable as thatamassed bv the speculator.
But no one thought of attributing the im
proved position of the two coachmen to the
operations of tbe fortunate speculator. Yetall
three owed their good luck to the same
simple expedient.
If any of the townspeople had bethought
them of watching tbe doings of the banker,
they would bave seen that every evening
about nine o'clock tbe latter betook himself
to a little lonely cottage of his standing in
the midM of a garden, a few miles, from the
town. There, in silence and seen the
VJLker received the visit of one or other of
the two coachmen, to whom, after the ex
change of a few words, he handed a basket,
carefully covered over with a bit of tarpau
lin, and which was at once deposited by the
Coachman at tbe bottom of a great hamper
of poultry, collected bj bim from tbe neigh
boring farms, and to be sold by him at the
towns through which bedrovehis coach. As
soon as tbe coachman had taken his depart
ure, tbe banker locked the cottage-door, and
went up-stain to a room fitted upas
pigton-bouse, of whose existence no one
eUe was aware, in which a number of pigeons
toon begau to make their appearance, with
flagging wings, impatient to drop into their
nest. The banker having stroked and petted
the weary birds and gave them corn, gently
lifted their wings and detached the little
billet conveyed to him by each unconscious
mefBengcr. These birds brought to the
speculator news of the exchange on all the
principal markets of Europe. Sent off daily
from London, Paris, Vienna, Brussels, Ac,
about four in the afternoon, the homo loving
little Mercuries never failed to reach their
nests about midnight. After receiving the
intelligence thus sent to him by trusty con
federates in each capital, the banker locked
tbe door of the cotbige and returned to bis
own dwelling, ready to operate next dy on
the Antwerp ExchiiLge with certain success.
The carrier-pigeon is now superseded by
electricity; but tbe Belgians have not re
nounced their old partiality for this bird,
and "pigeon-races still give rise among
them to numerous gatherings and heavy
bets. On these occasions the pigeons are
carried in a basket to a certain distance, and
are then waited for at a given spot by their
owners, the bird which arrives first winning
the prize, exactly as in the case of horse
races. Hecent'y, at one of these pigeon
races, held at Malines, a feathered courser,
let loose nt six A. M., at Tonnerre, in the de
partment of the Youne, France, reached
Malines at twenty-six minutes past eleven)
Not quite so quick as light or sound, but
very much quicker than steam could have
maae tne journey.

There was an exceedingly light business
at tbe Stock Board this morning, many of
the operators not having returned from
their Christmas jaunts. The aggregate of
transactions is scarcely up to that of the
Second Board in periods of activity. The
general tendency of tbe market was down

cover maturing contracts. There was but
little disposition snown to operate on time
either in buyers' or sellers' options. Be

inactive. At the Second Board there was
comparatively more activity and a stronger
