The PicToitiAL and Ii.tx'snt.vrr.u editions of SIIAKS PEAUE, lately published in E ngland, aie amongst ihe most beautiful specimens of tho recent and loinarkablo improvement of the art of wood engraving, which by. combining great excellence of execution with economy of price, litis given an unprecedented dill'usion to the most useful as well-as the most exquisite productions ot the arts of Design. The ileslirns of Kn.s-.w Meadows for the illustrations of Tyas' edition of Shakspeare express the character of the several personages, and the spirit of the scene, witlj wonderful Until and power: whilst the wood engraving of Knight's Pictorial edition combine with the highest merits of artand taste such a learned and mirmto nccu racy as to scenery, costume, architecture and antiquity as to make them a perpetual and most instructive com mentary upon the Poet's text. It is now proposed to embody in an .Imcrieun edition, the admirable illustiu tion of both theie editions, engraved with equal excel lraice of mechanical execution, to add to these, other eu gravings from eminent artists, U3 Reynolds, Luseli, S. Newton, &e and to accompany them with a beauti fully printed und correct, text. But the publisher, anxious that his country should pay some part of the homage due from her to llie great est Poets, -as to one ho belongs not solely lo England but to all who speak the tongue That Shakspeare spake, could not content himself with a mere republication or compilation. He has therefore prevailed upon Ii. W. Winn, whose reputation ns an Aitist is already identi fied with his country's histoiy, to contribute a scales of original designs, together with such advice and assis tance in other details of art as his taste may suggest for the illustration and embellishment of this ptiblicntion. Erotu the samt reason the publisher, instead of reprinting the text and commentary of any popular English im pression, was desirous that his edition should have the supervision of an American editor. This task has been undertaken, by GUI LAN C. VEKPLANCK. The plan proposed lo himself by the editor, is to fur nish the reader with tt carefully prepared and accurate ly printed text, uneni umbeied by any notes or com ments upon the page itself; as however useful they may bp elsewhere, they are too apt to divert, the mini I from the power of the Poet's thought, and to distuih tho ma gic of hia scene. Such notes as may be thought useful for the explanation or criticism of the text, will be thrown into an Annetidix to each play. The text of Shakspcare's dramatic woiks, drawn from old printed copies in his age, which had never pas sed under tho author's own eye, was consequently dis figured by many errors and obscurities. It passed du ring the last century through a succession of varying, editions until the rowsion of Stevens and Malone, wliosa text (or rather that of Stevens) has become the stan dard from which most of the English and American e ditions have been printed, with various degrees of ac curacy. But within the last twenty years, a more mi nute and familiar acquaintance with idd English idioms habits and modes of thought, guided by an intense and constantly increasing admiration for Shakspeare's ge nius, has led to the strong conviction that very many ot the numerous though slight deviations from the ancient text appearing in modem editions, are useless or erro neous interpolations, sometimes weakening tho sense and often substituting an arbitrary monotonous metrical regularity for the Poet's own native melody. Accord ingly very ninny of these emandalions have been rejec ted by the last and best English editors, especially Mr, Knight and Mr. Collier, and the readings of the old fo lios and quartos have been restored, unless where some error ofthe press or manuscript was undeniably mani fest. Yet tnero are many such passages confessedly corrupt, and requiring conjectural emendation; there are also differences of reading between the several old impressions, affording grounds forsomc diversity of text and warm controversy between the more recent editors. Upon these, the American eel tor thinks it due to tho character of this edition, to decide for himself without implicitly following tho text of any one modern edition. As the industry anil learning ot prior editors have lur n'shed the collation of various rcadiiitrs and the authori ties upon which they limy be suppoitcd, tho task is no longer that of laborious investigation, but, ns it were, of judicial decision enlightened by contending argument. A ii.nur of these variations are of nearly equal prob ability, and as some or lliem are doumiess tho author's own alterations nt different periods, all tho morn impor tant readings will be presented to the reader in thenotcs fur his own selection. Those notes will also contain so much of commentary as may be useful, to explain anti quated words and pfirnscs, obscurely expressed passage and allusions to obsolete opinions or the habits or his- . tory of the times; tho whole in ns condensed a form as nractii.iible. But any commentary upon Shakspeare, however brier, would be imperfect if it did not present some view of the higher criticism employed, not on tho interpretation of his language, but upon his thoughts, his clinrncter, his poetry, passions, philosophy. Tho only difficulty here arises from the abundance, the mag-, nificent variety, of the materials contributed during tho last half century by the most brilliant minds of Europe,. Still it is believed that this duty can be satisfactorily performed without swelling the edition to an inconve nient DlltK, II. W. IIEWET, PMUher, , 281 Broadway, New York. , , SB. .1.
