About five years ngo Mrs. Winter was nttacked with a violent cough, pain in the chest and side, and symptoms of approaching consumption. During the intervals from tnat time to sometime in Feb. last, she had been treated by eminent Physician fiom Utica, Sylvauia, Homer, Clmthnm, and Newark, and with only partial relief of the most urgent By mptoms. A bout one year ago she caught a violent cold, which seated uiwn tho Lungs, producing an alarming aggra vation of nil her previous svmptoms. Ilcr Physician was sent for, and despite his best efforts, she began rapidly to sink under her disease. Cough, Expectora tion, Hectic, together with night sweats, soon reduced her to a complete skeleton. Iu Feb. lust, her attend ing Physician, deemed her case altogether hopeless, a council was called and afier deliberating upon her case, unanimously pronounced her to be beyond the reach of means, ant! expressed their opinion that she could survive but it short time, one or two weeks at far thest. fc'he was at this time entirely confined to her bed, and scarcely able to articulate, except iu a whis per. Being greatly alarmed nt this, I npplied to a physician. but he snul lie thought he could do but little lor me ex cept give me some Mercury Tills, which I ret used to take, (eclingsatislied mey could do mo no goon ; many other remedies were then procured by my wife and friends, and none did me any good, and tho discharge of blood and corruption still continued every few days and at last became so'offensive I could scarcely breath. 1 was also seized with a violent cough, which at times caused me to raise much more blood than I had done before, and my disease continued in this wav, still grow ing worse until Feb. wben all hope of my recovery was given up, nnd my friends nil thought 1 would die with a tralloping consumption. At this moment, when my life was apparently drawing near ut a close, 1 heard of Dr. Wistar's Balsam of Wild Cherry, and got a bottle, which relieved me immediately, nnd hy the use of only three buttles of this medicine, all my pains Were remo ved, my cough and spitting of blood and corruption en tirely stopped, und in n few weeks my health was os far lestored as to enable me to work at my trade, (which is a Carpenter) and up to this tunc I have enjoy ed good health. , . . .. The text of Shukspeare's dramatic works, drawn from old nrinterl conies in his age. which hud never pas sed under the author's own eye, was consequently dis figured by many errors und obscurities. It passed du ring the last century through a succession of varying editions until the revision of Stevens and Mulonc, whoso text for rather that of Stevens) bus become the stun dard Irom which most of the English and American o- ditions have been printed, with various degrees ol ac curacy, lint withiu the last twenty yen re, a more mi nute and familiar acquaintance with old English idioms habits and modes of thought, guided by mi intense rind constantly increasing admiration for Sliakspeaie's ge nius, bus ied to the strong conviction that very many ol the numerous though slight deviations from the ancient text appearing in modern editions, are useless or erro neous interpolations, sometimes weakening the sense and often substituting an arbitrary monotonous metrical regularity for the Poet's own native melody. Knight and Mr. Collier, and the readings of the old fo lios and quartos have been restored, unless where same error of the press or manuscript was undeniably iii.'tni fiist. Yet there nre many such passages confessedly corrupt, and requiring cooiectuvnl emendation: tlie:e are also differences of leading between the several old impressions, aflbrding grounds forsome diversity of text and warm controversy between tne more recent ediiois. Upon these, the American ed.tor thinks it due to um character of this edition, to decide for himself without Implicitly following the text of any one modern edition.
