1 ; ;.. OHIO LEGISLATURE; In Senate, On. Saturuday, there wM quite n mterrvting debate en tli resolution of Mr. Anderson, to rescind (Le resolution ad mitting a reporter for the Aland Aitrictt. 11 is f cuocaUte color, with the bair of .a ne;ro of the full blood. Efforts were trmde to stave off the Action intil the relum of Dr. Towslied, whu in atsent in atten dance f hit sick UmUf. It wa resisted, because of the uactruinty of the tiqie lie would return. The remainder of the business transacted was toereiv of local character. (a the lloitse. the Erie resolutions were failed up, when a substitute was offend by by Judge Burchard. A debate ensued oil lliegeueral questioc at issue, which was protracted to considerable length, and was iimniged with signal ability on both sides. U. S. Vem. 231. ult. In Senate, on yesterday, tho bill firing the limes of holding the Courts of Common Pleas in this, the Sih Judicial District, was p akscd, As it has to pass Uie ordeal of the iiouse, where it may be altered, we will not loose time nnd room in giving a sjnop &is of it A resolution wae adopted instructing the Judiciary Committee to define mure clearly the jurisdiction and mode of proceeding on peace warrants, and to determine if Probate J u ljjes should, in any case, try offenses withont a jury, and to define the number of jurors required by the constitution, die. The remainder of the day was spent in committee of the who e, and on local busi ness. In the IIoti9e,a good day's work was done The majority of the Judiciary Committee reported that, in their opinion, the payment out of the treasury ot postage on doc uments distributed for the benefit of the people, does not come under the consiitntion al prohibition. The minority of the commit tee, comprising, we believe, Messrrs. O' Neal and Eckley, submitted a counter re port. Mr. Mackenzie introduced a resolution which contemplates the abolition of the life tenure of the office of Judges of the U. S. Supreme Court. This is right. The obnoxious feature wus origianlly included as a compromise between monarchy and re publicanism, and should be repealed, now that popular government, is no longer re garded as an experiment. The Erie resolutions received their quietus lastevening.by an emphatic vote.afterthe re jeciion of Judge Burchard's substitute, by a small mnjority. Several amendments, em bodying mere political truisms, were olfeied by Mr. Eckley, and others; but the House, regarding them as attempts to stave off the tiue issue, voted them down. ib Mk ult. In Senate, on yesterday, the bill for the abolition b! capital puuishment was eotiaid tred in committee of the wlrile. lis fate in the Senate is doubtful, and we are sorry it is so, for in this nge of progress the last of the code of a barbarous nge should be struck from the statute book. The lalnnce of the session was spent in committee of the whole on the bill of Mr. Pendleton, to amend the bill suppcmeiiUry to the act relating to guardians. The near, approach ol the time which public opinion seems to have fixed upon for the election of United States Senator, ren ders Icgislatiou the more tardy. Wlien the election is had, which we think will be in a few days, the committees will report matters for the tuition of the two houses, and busi ness will make swifter progress. In the House, the resolution for investi- eatmj the allairs of tne board of Public Works, was reported back, fltid its adoption recommended, Messis. Van Hook, VValkup, Mackenzie, and other Democrats,; unequivo cally declared themselves in favor of a thor- ou'li investiira'ion, as the only method of placing the matter in its true light before the peopl.'i and the lattet gentleman offered an amendment, extending the investigation to the affairs of the Board for the past ten years. Tnis was more than Gest & Co. liad bargained for, but they were compelled to swallow the dose, and the resolution was then passed. We hope a full investigation may be had, in order that it may be fairly tested wheth1 er Whig or Democrat administration of ihe affairs of the Board has besn the more prof itable for the people. ib 25;A ult. In Senate, yosterday, Mr. Williams of Coshocton, who had been detained at home by severe indisposition, took hi seat as a Senator. Mr. Wright introduced a series of resolu tions calling on the Boarj of Pnblic Works for certain information in regard to theirex penditures. In the debate -which ensued tlvirenn, it was stated that the material part had already been answered by the Board, in communication to the House,' already published and that the remainder, consisting of he items, &c, would require a laye cluneal force to make it out, and a vast ex penditure of money to print matter which would not be of use to either branch or to the public- The ressk.tions were laid on the table. !'"' In the House, Mr. Gilbert introduce a bill that property derived through a wife be fore or during conventure, shall, upon the dentil of her husband intestate, descend to her children, or if without chilbren, be vested herself. , . Mr. (..eland has put a project on foot, wliich we .think" will, if anything can, re -lieve our State and the whole West from embarrassment growiug out of tho proceed ings of the Erie o.l pirates. We refer to the appointment of a oommittre to report what acion is neceasary to protest the pub lie from the ruinious effects of tho railroad policy of Pennsylvania." We trust that such retaiatory measures will be adopted as will make that State hasten to retrace her steps. An attempt was was made to rescind the resolution providing for a full investigation i f the affair of the Board of Public Works for the past ten year.
