"THE STAB 6PANOLED BANNER." 0 say can you see, by Freedom's clear light, A stain on the banner that s over you fling; Which eushrouds the bright stars In the blackness of night, And proclaims to tho World that your lib crtv's dvinsr? Hear its victims despair, How it bursts on the air, And proclaims to the world tflat your flag is still there ; For the Star Spangled Banner la tri umph now waves, O'er a land whore one-sixth of the people are slaves. 'Mong the hills of the North, where we boast to the world, That no slave dwells with us by per mission, The folds of that Flag by our homesteads unfurl'd, Is but a Slave-catcher's Commission : To stalk through our home, And our neighbors to doom, To a life of despair more dread than tho tomb : For wherever tbe spot that that Banner doth wave There's not but despair iu store for the Blave. Oh 1 ye who have boasted your earlier fame, Behold now with shame your eouutry's prostration ; Deep in infamy's pit be buried the name i hat makes war to enslave a tree uatiouj Aud make her domains But a market for chains, While thus to the world she her vileness proclaims j That tho Star Spangled Banner floats not o'er tho brave, But o'er cowards whose glory's the. weak to enslave. Behold how the sons of your virtuous brave, Who were martyr' d in freedom's en deavor, Are compelled to betray the fugitive slave, Who has striven his bonds to dissever, And your Statesmen combined, O'er his limbs and his mind, The fetters of ignorance and iron to biudj For tho Star Spangled Banner in tri umph doth wave, O'er the the land of the tyrant aud the thrall of the slave. Oh weep ! all yo lover's of liberty's name, Oli I weep tor the utter uisgrace ot your nation ; And pray that her Banner be cleared from tho stain That has worked thus her sad deflation! With power and with might, Strive, pray, that the night Of oppression be pierced by the Gospel's pure light That the Star Spangled Banner in tri umph mat wave.
