An old Carolinian Killed in
Battle. Among those slain by our forces, was an old man, with long silvery Lair a pri vate in Sooth Carolinia regiment. I He had ery fine face. His hands were soft and fair and be appeared to have lived the life of luxurious gentleman. The messenger of death passed through his heart, and he lay oa the ground his mouth open his eyes filled an expression- of terror fearfully vivid even in death. A letter was taken from his pocket which bore traces of blood. Iuwas shown to me by a soldier. The writing was in the small and timid characters of a woman ; the en velope bore the direction; "Mr. James IkFeever, Company F, Sixth regiment, S. C. Yn Manassas Junction, Va, and the letter had been writen Dec 10,' 1861. "Dear Brothei," so it ran. "I take the time this morning to write y'ou a few lines We are all well as commoo. We got a a letter from you yesterday, dated Nov. 4 Boyd has writen home and he wants free John Archer to cook for his mess and Major wants pa to pay part. He is not wilting unless, you say so. You must write as soon as you can and let us know whether you want him or not. Pa has not time to write, for be is about closing out the Shannon spring and ho told me this morning to write to you, and this through four long pages traced with blood most illegible. The Rebel Account. We had news, at first that the battle of Cheat Mountain, under the lead of Gen. Milroy was a great Union victory and com pleted the dispertion of the Rebel forces in that part of Virginia. Afterwards the' news was modified and if it was noi a de feat to our troops, it was, at least a "draw" battle. Now we get the Rebel account as follows: CAMP ALLEGHENY, Dec. 21, 1861. Our boys are laughing heartily over the Yankee's published account of the battle of Allegheny. The following passage is really amusiig: The Rebels set fire to their camps and retreated to Staunton. Our boys left the field in good order. Why, my dear sirs, it would have done your heart good to have seen the scoundrels run ! The road for three miles was covered with their knapsacks, canteens, blankets, -WaMdhaversncks and the citizens from the country bring us Thenews TBaTnhey were stricken with the most disgraceful panic The villains vented their spleen up on an old woman living on the Greenbank road, destroying her furniture, carrying off provisions and breaking up her cooking atensils. Col. Johuson sent her a sack of lour and some other articles. Their troops went back to Cheat Mountain in wild con fusion demarlized and dispirited. Noth ing prevented their entire capture but the withdrawal of Col.Tallefero's brigade from this line of operation. . We learn from our spies and from men of North-Western Virginia that the enemy confess a loss, killed, wounded and missing, of over seven hundred men. Six were found yesterday with their eyes picked out by the erows, and many more doubtless lie scattered through the dense forest. Powder and Preaching. The bold Parson Brownlow has at least one brother in the spirit and in acts of unflinching loyalty 'and Christian patriot ism in Northern Missouri It is the Rev. Abner Russell, who formerly resided in Erie county, N. Y. The following letter from him has been handed to the Buffalo Express for publication. It presents horrible picture of the condition of things in Missouri. The dauntless courage ex hibited by the writer in his defiance of the rebels excites a thrill of admiration : MEMPHIS, Mo., Oct. 18, 1861. Mr Dear Brother We are well. have been shot at four- times ; had seven marks upon me, made with bullets, buck shot, &C., one bullet entered near the backbone, passing between two ribs, and is vet in roe; one passed so near lue neck that it felt hot, taking the .velvet off the top of my coat collar; another went throgh my coat over tne lett suouider; anotuer took the flesh to the bone off my big finger. Manv thought 1 could not live. 1 was confined to my room about four week and suffered much in body, but was bnppy in the Lord all the time. You. may ask', why did they try to kill me! because I bad said I was for the Union, and opposed to rebellion. The rebels said thai was enough to hang any one, and if I attempt ed to fill my next appointment they would hoot me, for no man that was raised in the north should preach in Northern Mis souri. I told them to crack away with their pop guns, for I had rather die than to stop preacbing tnrougb fear; but 1 did not think they would kill me, if they shot. On the third day of August, some eight miles from home, on my way to said ap pointment, I met a squad of men, armed with guns and big knives. Tbey shot me and took me back to Memphis. Col. Moore with his men are now in Memphis. I have been preaching some for them. Cy renius has enlisted for three years. My pen or tongue cannot describe the horrors of the war in this countiy, men fearing to travel or stay at home. The rebels lay in the brush and shoot at Union men as 'they pass; one of our neighbors was shot while looking for his horses, not far from his house; others were shot near Memphis and another was shot while in bed. Tbey say I must leave the State. If I do, they ... . t .it i . I.. . r . will bave to Kill me ana use me out, ior i will not run -for them. I am the only man, perhaps, in this section, that has not laid in tbe woods at nigbis .ibrougn tear. They may rob or kill me, but they cannot scare me. Mr. Dickinson on the Crisis. Last evening the Hon. Daniel S, Dickinson delivered an address at the Smithsonian Institution on the perils and hopes of our country. During the address, he spoke as follows: must strike hardest where ft is weakest. While wo stand no for and upon tbe Constitution, we should confiscate all the property of rebeldom including its persons held to service total, absolute, immediately, and employ them in the camps; feed, clothe and protect them, and leave it to congress to make such disposition of them as hu manity and the nature of the case demand. He held furtber: All governments claim a perpetuity; and to preserve government every power may be used even to despo tism. Constitutions do not make governments; governments make constitutions. Tbe habeas corpus act must yield to the terrible exigencies of war. A free press mast bow before tbe iron rule of Martial law. "Woman bids us to men and meet the occasion," and, under H circumstances, whispers "pre serve the Union " The hopes of our coun try, notwithstanding its perils, were greater bow ban aver before.
