The Peculiar Institution.
An inlelliaent citiren of Kansas, South ern born and bred, recently rernarked'to us that soldiers jn Kentucky would bo a good school for our Ohio boys touching the pe culiar institution, and that they would not bo likely to fall in. love with it, so great would thoy find tlo contrast in the condi tion of the free and slays States. Wo al ready find the remark verified in a letter from an officer in the Sberman Brigade, published in the Mansfield Herald. It is dated "Camp at Hall's Gap, Wickliffe Co. Ky., Jan. 2Stb," and Mr. Myers, of the Herald, who is tbo writer, says. 1 tell you I do not like to discuss po litical questions since I have got into the army, but I must say that since 1 have been among the peculiar institutions of the South, where it exists in tbo mildest form since I have seen the direst effect of the cursed rebellion raised by its supporters and have witnessed its blighting effect up on the country and the people, I have not changed my opinions previously formed, but rather become mora confirmed in them. Kentucky, everywhere I have yet been in it, is at least fifty years behind Ohio in every respect. This can be attrib utable to no other reason than slavery. .As. I was passing along the road the other day, 1 slopped at a very genteel looking, largo farm house by ihe way, and went in supposing to find the inmates cor responding with the exterior. But such a house. The interior looked as if a set of savages were living in it. No plastering on the wa'.ls or ceilings, rough floors, dirly halls, naked children and "niggers," sluv enly dirly faced women, swearing "tobac co chawing" men, all combined, gave me a very different idea of "Kentucky gentle men"! expected lo find'within its walls. In the principal room wore three or four beds with nothing but "itraw ticks" and a couple of quilts upon them, reeking with dirt and filth. In this same room was the inevitable old fashioned fire place a thing obsolete in Ohio with its-cord or two of wood piled on. The staircase to the sec ond story was a rickety concern, the old fashioned ladder of the log cabins of early days being princely in comparison to it. I hastily disposed of my business, and left, determined that I never I would judge a Kentucky farm house by its exterior, in tho fiiture, another fact: tho-women in this region, all smoke, chew tobacco or rub snuff. I don't wonder now so many Southern men corno north lo get North ern wives. Severe Fire in Pittsburg. The great Pittsburg Plow Works of John C. Bidwell were much damagc'd by fire the morning of the Gib. The main building, fronting on tho Allegheny river, and five stories high, was destroyed, to gether with 5000. plows, 38 gun carriages, stock, machinery, etc. Mr. B. estimates his entire loss at 50,000, upon which there is an insurance of $-10,000. A spatk from tho firo fell into a fiat boat containing several hundred bands of rock oil in bulk, without cover or protec tion of any kind, and a terrific conflagra tion ensued. Tho Gazette says : The oil was " moored but a few rods nboTO tho Hand Street Bridge, and as the flames leaped and roared in tho air it was feared that tho bridge could not escape. Adjoining this flat was another, loaded with oil in barrels, which also caught fire. The greatest excitement prevailed, and when the Jalter boat broke her mooring and. escaped, all hopo of saving tho bridge was abandoned. The firemen lined the bridge, mounted tho roof, and kept inces sant streams of water pouring over it, but tho chances looked hazardous indeed. Slowly the volcanic mass descended, and as it neared the bridge its progress was ar rested by an old slump projecting from the first pier, 'which caused it to stand a. mo ment and then swing round under the bridge. This was a critical moment, and as the burning mass emerged, leaving the bridge uninjured, the air was rentwith the shouts and cheers of the assembled spec tators. It is thought that the dense vol umes of smoke which smothered the flames at that moment, saved the bridge. The other flat was burnt lo the water's edge: all the oil having been licked out of it by tbo names, lue on belonged to Messrs. Robert Ash worth & Co., of Alle gheny, and was valued at $750. Of courso thero was no insurance upon it. Intervention in Mexico. It would seem that the Allies propose furnishing our neighbor, Mexico, wilh a Monarch in the person of tho Archduke Maximillian of Austria. The London Morn ing Post, the organ of Lord Palmerslon, tho head of tho English Ministry, favors it; and the Austrian monarchy is willing lo accept tho position for the scion of the Imperial House. Should Maximillion be come King or Emperor of levolutionary Mexico, he will probably very soon realize that "uneasy lies the head that wears a crown." The Thrted States will be likely to have a word to say in this proposed dis position of Mexico, before the arrange ment of tho European powers is consuma ted. Our Government was invited to join England, France and Spain in the Mexi can expedition, and Mr. Seward's" reply de clining to do so appears in the London pa pers. It bears date December 4th. Mr. Seward does not call in question Ihe right or sufficiency of tho grounds which havo led to tho intervention of tho allied pow ers, but says the United Slates havo an interest against their acquiring territory in Mexico, or gaining any other advantages in which tho United States cannot partici pate, and acquits them of any such desigo. Our Government has cause, also, of com plaint against Mexico, but declines enter ing into the scheme, first because it is con trary lo tho contrnditional policy of our country against foreign alliance; second, because it would bo unkind to enforce de mands against a sister republic, lorn by in testine disorders; because Mr. Corwin has had authority to treat with Mexico in our behalf, and tho result of his efforts has not appeared. Mr. Seward, in conclusion, says that tho treaty will contain nothing un friendly to tho aillied powers, and "will be shown lo them when affected. At tho same' time a sufficiently large fleet will ba left in Mexican wators to protect American interests. JC2T"Julius can you loll me how Adam gol out of Edon?" "Well, supposo ho climbed tho fence" "No,dat ain't it" "Well, ho borrowed a whool-barrow and walked out." "No," "Gubs it up den." "Ho got snaked out. Yah." HAMLIN'S WIZARD OIL Cares the following complaints: Rheumatism and Kvralgia, Nervous and Sick Headache, Contracted Cords and Muscles, Toothache and Sprains, Cuts and Brvises, - Cramp or Colic Pain, Burns and Scalds, Spinal Affections, Sore Throat, LAME BACK. The Vizard Oil is not recommended at a cure for all the ills that flesh is heirto, lint it will be seen upon in vestigation that tho aboi e complaints are all of the same nature, viz: Nervous and Inflammary Aches and Pains. For which the Wizard Oit is peculiarly adapted, not on ly on accconnt of its remarkable curatire properties. but because it is rery penetrating, and consequently iwhes the" seat of the disease, and eradicates the cause. The proprietor oj the Wizard Oil has labored to orercome this difficulty and with perfect success, as can le seen by testing the oil in tho folio ing manner: Tour a small quantity upon any part of the flesh, and rub tho part a moment, and the Oil will disappear almost in stantly. That it does not evaporate can be easily prov en by putting a teaspoonful in ihe open air and leaving it some time, when it will be seen that the same quan tity will remain, which of course wonld not be the case if itevaporated rapidly.
