Nashville News.
A Nnslivillo con
firms the reports of the p.tnic andtbo scene
enacted at .Nashville on the approach of
our troops ,as published yesterdaj from the
Manner of tuat city. Xner Manner is mu
nnlr narer now issued in Nashville, the
other offices being closed on account of
tho liasljr absence of proprietors. iue
Manner of "the 26th ulL, contained several
"good lord and good devil" articles. Tho
Jeffer'sonian, at Clarksville, is now issued
as a Union paper.
About one-third of tho inhabitants of
Nashville remain, the balance- have, lied
Southward. The secession city authori
ties say there has been more quiet in
Nashville since the Federal army entered
than for months before. The letter thus
NEGROES AND WHITE TRASH.
"VanderiDg around in the streets of
Nashville, I met crowds of negroes hasten
ing to the levee to, see Lincoln's war ves
sels, a pretty largo number of those pover
ty slrcken ones known as "poor white
trash" were mingled with them, and a few
respectable appearing citizens passed along.
But tho pride and wealth of the place had
fled Southward. Dressed in citizens
clothes, I had no difficulty in-entering into
conversation, but I noticed that soMiers
were carefully avoided. Asking the rea
son of an intelligent honest looking man,
- said none dare talk with Unionists, for
fear of being marked as spies, and punished
when the troops were withdrawn. He
had been in Nashville twenty years; was a
blacksmith by trade, and said that if the
stars and stripes were firmly planted in
Tennessee, large numbers would rally
around it, who were now afraid to declare
themselves. For the present Nasuville
may be considered warmly secession, and
the now smothered fire is at any moment
ready to break out. Ibose tuat give any
symptoms at all of loyally are the poorer
classes; too ncli ones, although rum
spreads around on ever- side seem to follow
on the path they have chosen. Among
the late refugees was John Bell, wuo with
his companions fled to Memphis.
GOV. HARRIS.
Tho tale of any repentance on the part
of Gov, Hans is a fabrication, tie lias
iust issued a call for all the militia of tho
Stale to at once report themselves, forser-'
vice. As in those- forts already captured,
half tho troops were armed wiih cleavers
and worthless rifles, the demand caunot bo
complied with, and would frighten no one
if it could.
THE ENEMY.
enemy
is not definitely known, but the main
body is thought to be at Chattanooga,
one .hundred and eighty miles distant.
Small "bodies, acting as skirmishers, swarm
through the surrounding country, constant
ly meeting our pickets. The inhabitants
around also take cvtry opportunity to shoot
sentinel-', and teveral are already missing,
being either killed or captured. Gen.
Buell moves at once to find the enemy, but
will not be able to do so without a week
or two's , marching. As they would not
offer baltlo to Gen. Buell alone, it is im
probable they will when his force is large
ly increased.
Everything goes to show that the rebel
troops are gicatly demoralized. General
Johnston, when he passed through Nash
ville, led little better than a mob, and re
treat, or rather .flight, never favors future
efficiency in an army. There is, therefore,
little probability of any battle occuring for
some time, in either Gen. Buell or Grant's
commands. Tiansports will bo at once
actively engaged in carrying troops from
Fort Donelson to Nashville.
This morning a train of cars arrived
from Louisville, the railroadhaving been
repaired by Gen. Buell's army, as they fol
lowed tho retreating enemy.
PROCLAMATION.
The Committee representing tho City
Authorities and the people have discharged
theirduly.by calling ou Gen. Buell, at his
headquarters in Edgefield, on yesterday.
The interview was satisfactory to the Coin
iniltee, and there is every assurance of
Bafety and protection to the people, both
in their person and property. I therefore
respectfully request that business be re
sumed, and all our citizens, of every trade
and. profession, pursue their regular voca
tions. Tho County elections will lake place on
the regular day, and nil civil business bo
conducted ,as heretofore; nnd the Com
manding General assures me that I can
rely on his aid in enforcing our police reg
ulations. One branch of business is inter
dicted the sale of intoxicating liquors, I
shall not hesitate to invoke the aid of Geu.
Buell in case the recent laws on this sub
ject are violated.
I most' earnestly Call upon the people of
the surrounding country, who are inside of
tho federal lines, to resume tueir com
merce with the city, and bring in their
market supplies, especially wood, butter,
and eggs, assuring them that they will be
fully protected and amply remunerated.
