Let them fade in good season as

Boys Using Tobacco.
A strong and sensible writer says
a good, sharp thing, and a true one,
loo, for boys who use tobacco. It
has utterly spoiled and utterly
ruined thousands of boys. It
tends to softening and weakening
of the bones, and it greatly injures
the brain, the spinal marrow, and
the whole nervous fluid. A boy
who smokes early and frequently,
or in any way uses large quantities
never known to make a man of
much energy, and generally lacks
muscular .and physical as well as
mental power. We would particu
larly warn boys who want to be
anything in the world to shun to
bacco as a most baneful poison.
It injures the teeth. It produces
an unhealthy state of the throat and
lungs; hurts the stomach, and blasts
the brain, and nerves.
This is good advice to moat par
ents; "Nothing can discourage a
child more than a spirit of fault
finding, and perhaps nothing can
exert a more baneful influence upon
both parent and child. If your
little Tone through-the day,- lias been
obedient, and you say to him, Oly
son you have been good to day and
it makes me very happy,, and if,
with a more than usually affection
ate voice, you say 'Good night, my
dear child,' a throb of suppressed
feeling fills his breast, and he re
solved on always earning such ap
proval, ii your grown son or
daughter has accomplished some
difficult piece of work, rendering
you some essential assistance; or
has climbed some steep in the daily
drill of study; or has acquired some
new accomplishment or added grace
or better than all, has gained the
victory over some bad habit or be
setting sin, acknowledge it, see it,
praise them for it."
Hints on Health—How to Destroy
The unpleasant odor poduced by
perspiration is freqnently.the; source
of vexation to persons who are sub
ject to it. Nothing is simpler than
to remove this odor much more ef
fectually than by the application of
such costly unguents and perfumes
as are in use. It is only necessary
to procure some compound spirits
of ammonia and place about two
tablespoonfuls in a basin of water.
Washing the face, hands, and arms,
with this leaves the skin as clean
and sweet as one could wish. The
wash is perfectly harmless, and very
cheap; It is recommended on the
authority of an experienced physi
cian. Sleepless people and there are
many in America should court the
sun. The very worst soporific is
laudanum, and the very best, sun
.shine. Therefore, it is .very plain
mat poor sleepers snoum pass as
man- hours as possible in sunshine,
and few as possible in the shade.

Farming a Dull Business.
Talking with a very bright and
ambitions j-onn'g woman. 'a farmer's
daughter, where we stopped over
night, she said larmmgwas a dull
sort of life. "Yes" said a young
man of twenty-two years, "there is
no incentive to work; it is all hum
drum, routine, and hard work no
relaxation of effort and nothing to
stimulate the mind."
"What nonsense," we replied
There is everything for a stimulus.
.bach farm is a world itself, about
which those who have lived upon it
know little or nothing, comparative
ly. Suppose, for example, we were
to ask you how many kinds of
grasses real grasses grow on the
farm could you tell us with their
correct names, habits and history ?
suppose we ask yon how many
species of plants are indigenous on
your farm, and the names of these
plants, time of flowering, color of
flowers, soil and locality in which
they grow could you tell us? Sup
pose we were to ask you how many
speices of birds visit your farm
every year, the tune of there arrival
and departure, there habits while
with you, their names and habits
while absent from your locality the
ine balance or the year could you
tell us? Suppose we ask you - how
many species ot insects arc to be
found on your farm their names,
History, uauus, wuciuer injurious
ro you or nor, upon what trees or
plants they live, when and how of
ten they appear, and how lopg they
stay could you tell us? Suppose
we ask you to show us specimens
of the grasses and other plants, the
birds, insects, etc, which may be
gathered within your boundaiy
fences, could you show them to us?
And yet, u you were to undertake
to acquire the knowledge we have
suggested by these inquiries j-oii
would find your life too short; yet
the knowledge you would gain, the
interest you would soon take in it,
and the knowledge of your own im
potency j-ou would acquire would
prove to you "that it is not the farm
that is the dull place, but it is you
-who are dull! Moor's Sural Nexc
me heart ot liou lies about our
lives as closely as the air. There is
no smallest act or thought that docs
not echo itself in Him, and this di
vine presence is intensely sympa
thetic It is not the mere oversight
of a judge registering phrase and
blame. It is the companionship of
one who rejoices in all our joy, and
suffers in all our pain. There is no
glad heart beat in the world that
the Almighty heart does not beat
with gladness iu response. There
is no little child's cry of sorrow over
its broken toy, that a more than
mother's love does not catch. The
sense of this presence should not be
burdensome to us. Nothing is more
false than to suppose God to be al
ways exacting. He gives himself
with all the geuerosity and freedom
of love. He would not always have
us serious toward him Our God
dwells not in Siani; not even Cal
vary is his only home. He is in all
the beauty of the world around us.
In the trees of the forest, in the
dewdrops quivering on the grass, in
the robin's song, in the fleecy clouds
in all the beauty and music that fill
the heart on spring s brightest cMiy
in all these is our God. They
are his vestments and his voice.
As, looking on the face of a friend.
we feel the soul within, so we are to
look upon Nature and say, "This is
the face of God."
Leaning on God.
Resting on an arm of flesh seem
to be the hereditary disease of
God's people. They fly first to
this and then to that, but forget
their true and only resting place.
The simple walk of faith, rrusting
and leaning alone upon the Invisible
how dilucultit is to bring ourselves
to it! We would have some favor
ite child to lean upon, or husband,
or wife, or friend. Ourabiiities, or
something or other that we cannot
see and handle shall be the golden
calf which we set up and say, 'These
be thy gods, (J Israel! Here is a
great difficulty, then to wean ns
lrom crutches, which are promoters
of spiritual lameness.
1 have never met with a child
that had any fear about the nurse's
power to hold it up. She nuts her
arm about it, and it trusts itself
with her,- leaning wholly upon her.
But we appear tobe afraid of leaning
hard upon God; we cannot leave
ourselves witli him we don't throw
ourselves right back on the Divine
bosom, let there is no true rest
to ourselves till we do. As long as
we are trying to support ourselves
iu some measure or degree, we
have not yet come to the rest of
faith. I have known people who
went in the sea to learn to swim, but
they never dare take their feet off
the bottom, and I do not see how
they can swim while they also en
deavor to stand on their feet.
Standing and swimming cannot
be managed at the same time. So
there are souls that would fain trust
themselves to the goodness of God,
but they cannot be content without
an early prop. They cannot quite
cast themselves upon God and trust
in the stream or his abundant faith
fulness; they cannot walk by faith;
they must have some way or other
of clinging to the flesh. Oh, for
grace to be willing to believe in God.
