Floral Decorations at Parties.
BY M. B. BATDHAM. t-i. 1 The use of flowers and plants for the decoration of parlors and tables, at fashionable parties and weddings, has increased wonder fully wiinin a lew years, it is not unusual for eight hundred or a thousand dollars to be expend- ea lor nowers ana plants lor a single occasion. The sale of cut flowers in the city of New York is estimated at over a million dol lars annually. About one-fourth of this sum is expended in one month at the season oi Christ mas and New Year's festivrties.at which time the florists are all taxed to their utmost abilities, and extravagant prices are often ob tained ibr choice flowers. The ' Horticulturitt .says the -. wolesale or trade price the pres ent winter is, for rosebuds $5 to 6 per 100;came llias,$GO,tuberos es, $10; but the consumers pay double these rates. As Spring ' approaches the price declines. The jiUle tine called Smilax is very much used, and sells for 50 cents ,to one dollar a yard. Mr. Hen derson, the great florist, says there are about twenty green houses, having an area of 20,000 feet, in New York and Boston, devoted to growing Smilax alone, and whole acres of glass structures devoted to rosebuds, violets tuberoses In London, the demand for flow ers for in-door decoration, is said to be astonishing, and the prices paid for them on some occasions quite amazing. Hie dinner ta bles at fashionable parties are of ten perfectly embowered 'with vines and flowers. At a recent dinner the flowers cost one thou sand dollars. Much taste and skill is - displayed m the" " decora tion of dinner or supper tables, and to assist our readers who may wish to try their hands at this de lightful art, we give the follow ing extract and illustrations from Vick's Floral Guide for 1873 a work which every one who grows flowers should send for. "Much attention is -given in Europe to Table Floral Decora tions. The different Horticultural Societies offer large prizes for the best decorated Dining Table, and in some cases these exhibitions j are made in rooms darkened for the occasion ana iigntea with gas Nothing prettier can be imagined MW1 UN. than bne of these' exhibition I ibles ; With one 6tyle I was much I pleasedf It consisted of low flowers in shallow glass vessel, with three central ornaments, as shown in the engraving. This is of glass, about two inches in width, and of such forms that tliey can be made intoYalmost any shape desired. Being partially niiea with water, nowers, arrang ed ih them according to taste. Tlie whole ornament stands upon a piece of mirror of the desired form, and then the flowers are reflected in the- mir i ror, and it is hard to realize that we are not looking upon a sheet of water. ; . . - A Philadelphia paper says flow ers are quite the" rage there. It is the fashion now to send boxes of nice cut flowers as presents in tead of 6tiflly tied bouquets, and ladies greatly perfer this method, as the flowers keep fresh much longer, and can be used for a va rity of purposes. Flowers pur chased for funerals and weddings are of the most expensive kind,1 and yield largely to the growers In midwinter the price of a hand some basket is from $10 to $50. Bouquets can be made from $5 to $2d. bmgle rosebuds cost 25 cents and carnations 20 cents. Smilax is sold for $1 a yard, and one spray of Jily ofthe valley costs 25 cents. Wealthy people invest lareglyin nowers on all occasions of iesti vity. Large floral bells, which cost from $100 to $200 are or dered for ' weddings and the brackets and vases must be filled and trailings baskets of rare flow ers must ornament every table and tripod. A Pleasing Incident. ; Sitting in a station the other . day, I had a little sennon preach ed in the way I like;and I'll report it. lor your beneht, , because it taught one of the lessons which we all should fear, and taught it in such a nautral, simple way . that no one could forget it. It was a bleak, snowy day, the train was late, the ladies,-room dark and smoky ,and the dozen women old and young, who 6at waiting . impatiently, all looked cross, low , spirted,or in study. I felt all three and thought, as I looked around, that my fellow being were a very . unamiable, uninteresting set Just then a forlorn old woman shaking with palsy; came in with a basket of ware for sale, and ; went about mutely offering them to the sitters. Nobody bought anything, and the poor old soul stood blinking at the door a min ute, as if reluctant to go out in to the bitter storm again." She turned presently, and poked about the room, as if trying to find something, and then a pale lady in black, who lay as if asleep on a sofa, opened her eyes, saw ' the old woman, and instantly as- ked, in a kind tone. "Have you ' lost anything, madam? No, dear. I'm looking for the heatin'-place, to . have a warm 'fore 1 goes out again. My eyes are poor, and I don't seem to find ' the furnace nowheres. Here it is and the lady led her to the steam radiator, placed a chair, and showed her how to " warm her feet. Well, now, ain't that nice? said the old woman, spreading her ragged mittens to dry. "Thanky , aear, this is proper comfortable: ain't it? I'm most froze to day, bein' lame and wimbly, and not selling much makes me kind of downhearted." ' ; The lady smiled, went to the counter, bought a cup of tea and some sort of food, carried it her self to the old woman, and said, as respectfully and kindly as if the poor woman had been dressed in silk and fur, won't you have a cup of hot tea? It's very comforting such a day as tms. - ' "Sakes alive! Do they give tea to this depot? cried the old lady in a tone of innocent surprise, that made a smile go round the room, touching the glummest face like a streak of sunshine. Well now this is jest lovely, added the old lady, sipping away with a rel ish. "This does warm the cockles of my heart," While she refreshed herself, telling her story meanwhile, the lady lookod over the poor little wares in the basket, bought soap and pins, shoe-strings and tape, and cheered the old soul by pay ing well for them. ; As I watched her doing thiB, I thought what sweet face she ' had, though I'd considered her rather plain before. I felt dread ! fully ashamed of myself that I i had grimly shaken my head when tho basket was offered to me,and as 1 saw the look of interest sym pathy, and kindliness- come into Uie dismal iaces all around me. did wish that I had been the mag ician to call it out It was only a kind word and a friendly act but somehow it brightened that dingy room wonderfullv. It changed the faces of a dozen wo- men, andl think it touched a doz en nearts, lor 1 saw many eyes follow the plain, pale lady with sudden respect, and when the old woman got up to go, several per sons beckoned to her,and bought something, as if they wanted to repair their first negligence. . ' Old beggar women are not ro- mantic;neither are cups of tea, boot-laces,and colored soap, there were no gentlemen present to be impressed with the lady's kind act' so it wasn't done ibr effect, and no possible reward could be received for it except the un gramatical thanks of a ragged old woman. But that little charty was as good as a sermon to those who saw it,and I think each trav eller went on her way better for that halt-hour in the. dreary sta tion. I can testify that one of them did, and nothing but the emptiness of her pnrse prevented ner irom "comlorting the cockles of the heart" of every forlorn old woman she met for a week after. By Louisa M. AlllotU in the Scrap Bag. ' Lost and Found. A good man was travelling through a wood in a dark night in a foreign land may years aeo, The frightful howl of the woLfnd the terrible yell of the catamount every now and then broke the si lent stillness of the dark nieht. As he rode slowly along.he heard a soft gentle cry. He thought it was a child. He stopped and listened, it seemed a great way off. He said to himself, "What shall I do? It may be a cata mount Jbr this creature sometimes imitates the cry. of a person1 in distress, to draw people to it that it may deo ir them, or it maybe a robber, who seeks to lure me out of my path and get money. If it is really a child, it is so dark I am afraid I cannot find it". He lis tened again, and still heard the cry as of a child, i He was a kind- hearted, resolute man. 4 He said to himself again, "It may be a child. I will go to its relief, though I may risk my own life." So he got off his horse, , and tied him to a tree, and went into the woods in the direction where he heard the cry. After going some distance he heard it as he thought still father off, in a different di rection. Still he followed on. Af ter going for some time he stop ped to listen.anu felt a little hand pulling his clothes. He stooped down to see what it was, for he did not know but it might, be a black snake winding itself around him, but he heard a low, sweet voice say, "Pa is it you! - The gentlemen took up the lit tle boy,who was about four years of age.- Eat now he was in dan ger of being lost himself, for he did not know how he should find his way back to his horse. IIow- ever,God directed his feet and he came out in the right place. He got on his horse with the boy in his arms, and road on till he came to a house, when he got off and went in ,and io! it was the house of the boy's father. And there was joy in that house. The father and mother fainted when they saw their little son.for they thought he was dead. The children jumped, and clap-1 ped their hands, and cried 'Henry come! Henry's come! ' Foor Jit-1 tie fellow! he had been lost from his father's house almost three days. He was pale and almost starved. Oh, how glad he was to I get home! and they were all glad and rejoiced, for they were mourn ing for him, thinking he was dead He had been lost and was found. AHMCASfWATCpS!
