[From Vick's Floral Gaide for 1873.] Improvements of Home Grounds. Planting Trees and Shrubs in Lawns—Making Flower Beds. i Two great errors are usually made, both by gardeners and am stores; one destroying the j lawn by cutting it up with unnecessary walks and flower beds, the other producing the same resnlt by al most covering it with trees and shrubbery. Grass canaot grow well among the roots and under ,tho shade of trees and shrabs, and no lawn can look well cut up in sections by numerous roads. Most t. .ot the jlittle lawns we see m tne ' ! country are almost destroyed by tone or both of those causes. The main part of; the lawn should be left unbroken by tree or shrubjts a reneral rule, and if any tree is admitted here it should be : only an occasional fine specimen, like a purple beech, magnolia, or cut leaved birch. A tree or two in certain appropriate places, is of ' course, desirable, but plant lor the future, -not for the -present and always have In "viefrrthe size from and habit of the trees when full grown, and not their present and perhaps delicate form. PLANTING FOR CURVED WALKS. ; Every cnrve jn a walk should be a sensible oneithatis. have a rea son for its course, either real or apparent; therefore arrange your planting so as to maKe an appar ent necessity for every turn. The idea is shown in the above engra ving where the walks appear to turn to accommodate the trees, i 'sOne great difficulty with Amer ' Scan gardens is that they are too large, and not sufficiently cared for. If we expended the same amount cf labor on a quarter ot an acre that we now do on an acre. ' the result would bo jauch more satisfactory. No one should have, more ground in garden than he can keep in the highest state of - cultivation.' It is this kind ot ex . ceBence that affords pleasure, : while failure-or partial success is a source of pain. It is not only a fault to cultivate oo much ground, but even too many flow: ers. Some seem anxious to ob v tain and grow everything. This .. is not best, especially.where there is not a good deal of ome and , money to bedevotedto the wort . A choice selection is best, and i like every cultivator of flowers to have a pet or hobby. ! Take, for instance, the Pansy, and make it a pet. - Obtain the choicest seed, and give the plants the bestf of care, and you - will see to what wonderful perfection ' it, can be grown. In a few years you will ' tire perhaps, of this. Then adopt the Balsam, or stock, or Aster. . ; Always have something choice something grown better than any one else is growing it something you have reason to be proud of. . It will astonish yon to see how flowers thrive under such petting and what a wonderful exhibition they make of their gratitude. Some persons may think from what we have said in favor ot erass in front ot the house in Tier- ference to beds of flowers, that we are no friend of these beauti ful treasures these delightful children of the held and garden. - who speak in every fragrant breath, and lovely tint, and grace - ful form.ot Him who spake from ' naught their matchless beauty, I only wish them to be treated in a proper manner. In the center of the- lawn .especially if opposit e a window, it is well to make a - round or oval bed,and on the bor ders or near the edges of the lawn beds of various graceful forms. A few plans for these are given in the annexed engraving. ; These beds' should be filled with flowers that will I keep-- In bloom during" the whole season, and it is best generally to have but one Kind in abed. PhloxDrum-mondii,Verbena,Por-tulaca, and the scar let Geraniums, are well adapted for this purpose. These beds must be rememberd are for the ornament ofxhe grounds, and they furnish no flow-' ers for the! house no presents for friend no bouquetorthe di ning room, or for school or church,' or the sickroom. These ;we must have. So; just back of the lawn make generous beds of flowers that you can fcht freely- Asters; Balsams,Zi. mas, blocks, Migno- nette, bweet Feas etc. In these beds you can also grow the Everlasting Flowers for win ter use. It is best to make these beds oblong, about 4 feet in width, so 0V 5q that you can i preach j hab: way across,' with alleys or paths betwV A faw well ' filled vases are an appro priate decora--tion of any '" grounds ; if kept in good' conditi on with healthy ' plants. The evaporation - from baskets . and' vases is "' very great, much more . than is gener- - ally supposed as evey side is exposed to air, sun, 'ect, and they must receive a copious supply of water every evening in any weather to keep the plants in a healthy con-1 anion. ROCK FLOWER BED. Anothefvery pretty ornament for the garden is the Rockery, made of rough stones, tastefully laid up,-with earth' sufficient for the growth of plants suitable lor this work. Low growing plants with succulent and ornamental foliage ere appropriate to the rockerv rortulace is admirable. I would like my readers who have had no experience in this 'kind of garden ornamentation to try a specimen A some retired quarter of the garden, so that n it proves a failure no harm will be done. We givtran illustration of a bed of thiskih(C' Forgiveness of Sin. It has stood the test of years, with a con stantly - crowing reputation, based on its intrinsic virtnes, and sustained by its remarkable cures. So mild as to be safe and beneficial to children, and yet so searching as ta effectually puree oat the great corrup tions of the blood, such as the serof nkms and syphilitic .contamination. Impurities or diseases that bare lurked in the system for years soon yield to this powerful antidote, and disappear. Hence its wonderful cores, many of which are publicly known, of Scrofula, and all scrofulous diseases, Ulcers, Emptlons, and emptiTe disorders of the skin. Tumors, Blotches, Bolls. Pimples, Pustules, Sores, St. Anthony's Fire, Hose or Ery sipelas, Tetter, ' Salt Rheum, Scald Head, Ringworm, and in ternal Ulcerations of the Uterus, Stomach, and liver. It also cures other complaints, to which it would not seem especially adapted, such as Drop sy, Dyspepsia, Fits, Neuralgia, Heart Disease, Female Weak ness, Debility, and Leucorrhoea, when they are manifestations of the BCTofuloos poisons. ;i It is an excellent restorer of health and strength in the Spring. By renew ing the appetite and rigor of the diges tive organs, it dissipates tbe depression and listless languor of the season. Even where no disorder appears, people feel better, and live longer, for cleansine the blood. The system moves on with renewed rigor and a new lease of life. PREPARED BT , Dr. J. C.
