PERENNIAL FLOWERS.
The Best Varieties—New and Old.
BY M. B. BATEHAM.
One great excellence of Vick's
Floral guide, is that it is evident
ly written for the purpose of dif
fusing information about flowers,
and promoting a taste for their
culture rather than to get money
from its readers. Hence it gives
instruction about many varieties
for which few if any orders are
likely to be received either for

are among the oldest ane best of
garden- flowers. They almost
rival the rose in fragrance and

like the carnation are propagated
from cuttings or layers. They
require a sheltered situation, or a
cold frame, for protection in se

A Thumbing Story.
TOLD BY A VERY YOUNG BOY.
Once there was a little' boy,
' named Peter Flumkinsj lie was
iour 'years bid, but he sacked 'his
. thumb. When he went to . bed
- he put his thumb in his mouth
and sucked it till he fell asleep
He had ' an uncle Dick, and hia
uncle. Dick told him if he would
stop sucking his thumb, he would
' give him a geat big barn, full of
norses and carriages. . I
Now Peter thought this would
be jolly, and so he. didn't take his
thrimb that night; nor the' next
night; and the next day his uncle
Dick brought him a great big
barn, with glass windows in it,
and a carriage and wagon, and
four horses, and a coachman, and
a hay loft, and everything. Peter
thought this was so fine he show
ed it to Lis mamma and papa, and
said he would never suck his
thumb again. . . ,
But after a while he broke all
the horses, and then his barn did
not look so pretty, and when he
went to sleep he didn t feel good
without his thumb in his mouth,
and so he1 began- to suck his
thumb again. ' t
His mamma told him she would
have to take the barn away? 'but
he said " he didnt -care," Then
his uncle Dick told him a story

Perennial flowers are not so
numerous nor so common as An
nuals. They are not, as a rale,
so easily grown from seeds. Some
of them are propagated by cufc-4
tings, offsets, or divisions of the
roots. They do not as a class
make as fine a show during the
latter part of summer as the an
nual, but some of them are quite
desirable lor blooming earlier
in the season, while others excel
in the gorgeouaness of their flow
ers. I will mention some of the
most desirable of both these
classes.
