Wholesale and Retail dealers in GroOerics, Drugs, kc, Akron, Ohio, arc now receiving their spring stock which surpasses that of any other ag mirtmciit ever brought to Northern Ohio. They sell a largo amount of goods to Holmes county. The chief reasons for this is that the communica tion with Akron is direct, and Messrs. W. k S. are highminded, honorable business men, who sell goods on short prolits and deal satisfactorily with their customers. Weimer & Steinbacher. The Death of Seneca---Thrilling Incident in the Early Settlement of Holmes County. The country which now composes in part the counties of of Holmes nnd Coshocton, that through which tho jvillbuek runs, in early days was a fine buntiug ground, and a favorite hnuiit of the "Red Men of tho Forest." This imimcdiate ueghbor. hood was on their trail from the F.ast to the West Men are yet living in this vicinity who endured the tria Is and hardships incident to a front ier life ; and they relate many thrilling ttori.-s of bloody adventures, and hair-breadth escapes from the sav age Indians. Prominent among the Indian chiefs who lived iuthe first quarter of the present century is the name of Seneca, w1h was chief of a tribe ofluili eus known by tli.it name. HUtory gives a promi nent place to him and his tribe, but the particulars of bis death find no puico upon the record. That he lived, every one knows; that he died, has been established in every mind by the immutable decrees of nature; but how, when or where he died is not known to probably more than a dozen persons now living. Jacob Ammonii, now a resident of Coshocton County, who was a soldier in the war of 1HI, and fought bravely for his country, lived, in the year f in a log cabin about ono mile North of Mil lersburg, on lands now owned Mr. Jamis Henoer win. Seneca was a frequenter of this neighbor hood. Mr. Ammond owned two guns. During the Bummer of 1&1G, Seneca borrowed a gun from Ammond to take with him to Seneca County, O., which he agreed to return in two weeks. Three weeks passed away and the gun was not returned Mr. Ammonii beenmo uneasy about bis gun, which was much more valuable then than it would be now, and be sent word to Seneca to bring it home, The Chief brought tho gun to Ammond'b cabin, but be appeared to be in a very bad humor. He remained about tho cabin for nn hour or two and started oft hunting. He shortly returned and told Ammonii that ho had a bear near Mile Pond, which ho wanted him to come and help kill. Mile Pond is a swamp or pond a short distance outh of this place, which w as so named from the fact of it beiug a mile in length. It is, however, quite narrow; and at the time of which we write it was densely surrounded with trees and under brush. Ammond feard that it was him instead of a bear that Seneca wanted to kill, lie communi cated these fears to his wile w ho advised him not to go. He at first refused to go but after delib erating over the matter he concluded thalhe would be safer there where he could watch Seneca, and have an equal chance with him, than he would if taken eltewhero by surprise. He gave Seneca one gun aud kept the most trusty one himself, and started. When they arrived at the poud Seneca told hitn to take one side of the pond and he would take the other, which he did. He, however, kept bis eye on Seneca instead of looking for a bear. It was not long until he saw the Chief hide behind tree and aim at him. He carelessly got a tree between rango'of Seneca's gun and himself, leavo iug enough of his clothing exposed to bo shot at without injuring him. Seneca's gun burnt prim ing and while he was behind the tree fixing it tor second trial Ammond took dcliberato aim and when Senica exposed his head he fired and killed him. Mr. Ammond, although a bold, brave man, was very much frightened at what ho had done. Not so much at the act of killing Seneca to save his own life, but ho feared that the Chief had other Indiana in ambush to aid him in caso he needed their assistance. He ran some fivo miles down the crook, and becoming satisfied tliat he was not pursued ho came carefully back on the ridge. He crept up near enough to where Seneca lay to see that ho had not been disturbed, and dis covering thia his fears were overcome. He strip ped somo elm bark and with it tied a largo stoue to Seneca 'a body, arid carrying him into the pond us f.ir as he could wadu he let him sink, aud this was the last of tho renowned Seneca. For forty years Mr. Ammond kept this tragic af fair a profound secret. Ho thnn had learned enough of law to know that he could not be pun islied for it, and revealed tb0 matter to our countr Recorder, from whom wc louru these lutrticulitra. 'This scrap of biBtory is no staiu upon the character of Mr. A. If it was we would not publish it.for we Uold in too high regard the gallant men who niado the "wilderness to blossom as the rose," to mar their old age with ono unkind word, and we cher ish too muoh lovo for the bravo vctrans of the war of 1813, who bear the scars of our second war of independence, and who are sinking under tho weight of years in bring one pang to their patriotic rraIH. ! n-inv" of of to for In i a It ill h- TN of nn vie for. of t co for but one and Gone East. n.
