Cutting the Cake.
A pnrty of friends hnd assembled ono
evening, and afterdiscussing the various
tonics of the dav. ono of them remarked:
Well, boys, I s'pose you've heard of
David Dincon.b s marriage
Some of them had and some of them
hail not.
Well,' continued the sponker, 'he in
married, arm 1 was to his wedding. A
riehtmerrv time we hod of it, too, 1 us-
sine you; but there was one .thing that
surprised me very much, and that was
tho manner in which they cut tho wed
dine cake I can't help thinking of it
Now what do you supposo they cut it
with?
'The wedding rinc,' said ono.
'No,' answered the first speaker, 'guess
agimi.
A string.' said another.
'No.'
A slick whittled to an edge,' suggest
ed a third.
No.'
A bit of tin,' ventured a fourth.
'No.'
A piece of pasteboard,' guessed a
fifth.
'No.'
'A piece of wire,' chimed in a sixth.
'iSo;
Well what is it? exclaimed ihey all in
a brenlh.aftcr guessing every imaginable
thing that would be put through a cake.
'Why,' said the querist slowly, "they
cut it with a knife to be sure!'
I Have Seen.
I have seen tho most worthless and
lazy fellows dress the most fjshionn
bly. I hove seen t're most talented young
men turn tipplers and die drunkards.
I have seen men who boasted much
of their wealth, who were not able to
pay their tailor.
I have seen men who mode much
noise about their bravery and daring ex
ploits; and
I have seen the same men run away
from a goose.
1 have seen men run in debt without
any probability of being able to make
payment.
I have seen n man who requested an
other to solicit him to become a candi
date for office.
I have seen a man urging another to
become a candidate; and
1 have seen the same fellow vcte a
gainst him at the election.
1 have seen parents urging their chil
dren to marry against their inclination;
and
I have seen a lovely young girl marry
a rich old bachelor, merely for his
wealth; and
I have seen tho same girl die bioken
hearted within a year.
I have seen the young and beautiful,
the talented, marry a dashing, brainless
fop, because he too was rich; and
I have seen them, ever after, drag out
a wretched, miserable existence.
AN OLD MAN.
The World of Fashion.
Pickens, in his Bleak House, thus
describes the 'world of laslnon: 'It is
not a largo world. Relatively even to
this world of ours, which lias its limits
too, (as your Highness shall find when
you have'made tho tour of it, and are
come to the brink of tho void beyond,) it
is a' very little speck. There is much
good in it; there are many good and true
people in it; it has its appointed place.
But the evil of it is, that it is a world
wrapped up in too much jnwclcr's cot
ton and line wool, and cannot bear mc
rushing of the larger worlds, and cannot
see them as they circle round the sun.
'How ere you, Smith?' says Jones,
Smith pretends not to know him, and
replies hesitatingly 'Sir, you have got
the advantage of me.' 'Yes,' retorts
Jones, 'I suppose everybody hss that's
got common sense.' Smith looks un
happy. 'la that a lightning bug in the street?
a.ked an old purblind lady. 'No, grand
, ma,' aaid a pert little Miss, 'it Is a big
bug with a aegar.'
. What part of Ireland are you from.
Mr. Dohcny I
'Ah, be me powers, I'm from the whole
of it now," aaid Doheny.
- It is said that the best way lo make a
balky horse pull, is to tie a string tight
around the ear.
