r m nmm OFFICIAL PAPEE OF DICKINSON COUNTY TWELVE PAGES. VOL XXV. ABILENE, KANSAS. THURSDAY MORNING. DECEMBER 12, 1907. NO. H. Abilene Banks Make Fine Financial Showing The National bank call waa made Thursday and the State bank call waa made Friday; both far the same date, December S. The condensed state ments of the four Abilene banks la published today and the eity has rea eon to be proud ot the showing made. . Not only are the banks in splendid condition generally but they have more oash and exchange in proportion to their" deposits than last summer and more than they hare had' in many years. The total deposits of the city are (883,058 while the cash, exchange and bends held . by the bank, make " the handsome total of $41,621, prac - tioally fifty per oent of the deposits in the banks. This Is a remarkable showing and is evidence ot the sub stantial condition of the banks. All the banka have cash far in exoee, of their legal requirements and tt it doubtful If to good a condition waa ever made in any statement in this oity. Of the 1441,521 in cash Items of the banki (307,863 la in currency and ex change; (133,668 ia in government bonds, school bonds and other listed bonds at their market value, as good as gold. The late fall is always the time of low deposits. The depositors draw out their money to buy winter sup plies and to pay taxes and the returns from the farm produots have not yet come in. For instance, September 1st, 1906, the banka ot town had $910. 000 on deposit; in the last week of November they had (874,075. They now have (883,068 or (8,985 more than they had a year ago. ' The loana made by the local banks have been paid off In proportion to the decrease in deposits and the liqua dation has been a healthy symptom. Judge Reese and His Office Seeking 7 Judge Reea has announoed him self as a candidate for oongresa in this dlstriot. He ia on the benoh and his term will not expire for two years. The people ot the state, embracing the people of thl, congressional dis trict, have deoided and have crystal lied their decision into constitutional law, that no man shall be eligible for any other ontoe during the time for which he ia e'ected to the district benoh. In the face of that constitutional provision' Judge Rees is a candidate. In being a oadldate he violatea the law. True, It ha, been determined that the house of representative, is the sole judge of the qualification, of it, members. Therefore, the house ot representative, may, in the exer cise ot it, prerogative. Mat Judge Ree, if he i, elected. Bat la doing so the hoase must ignore a provision of our state constitution. This power ot the house of repre sentatives doe, not minimise, or tend in the least to palliate, the offense of a dlstriot judge in openly and fla grantly violating the state constltu tioBvby being a oandldite for another office while he 1, yet a judge. Even if he should resign hi, present office that does not qualify him, un der the state law, to become a candi date for congress. But to hold on to hi, present oflioe and be a candidate lor congress Is not only a violation of law, but It i, a prostitution ot public position that should not be tolerated by the people. Judge Ree, is a man of good repu tation. I am told he ha" made a good judge,... I. believe him 4e ba a good man. But 1, ail the worse for a good man and a good judge to violate the law. It establishes a preoedent that makes only for evil. It 1, believed that Judge Ree, I, a candidate of the square dealer,, ,o oalled, yet It is quite oertain that the maohine Inspired his candidacy. Hi, oandidaoy originated from oertain Sa line oounty politicians, some of whom are for Calderhead and other, who want to beat Calderhead. Brlstow has recently received a valuable aineoure position from the president. This could come to him only through Senator Long. No matter what the appearanoe, are, a man is a polttioal tool who doe, not know that Briatow oould not have reoeived the appointment exoept through the Influence, ot Senator Long. Hi, position Is dtreotly undersecre tary Taft. Long I, the ohamplon of Taft in thl, stste. Long 1, the special representative of Roosevelt in thl, state. I know oertain square dealer, in Saline county think they originated the idea ot Roes', oandidaoy, but they are mistaken. They did not see the wires that were booked on to them and ounningly pulled under cover, by Long, Taft and Roosevelt, through Fitzpatrick and Bristow. In the plan ot Reea1, candidacy 1, involved the judgeship of the Saline Ottawa district. Saline oounty I, to have the judge. Less than a dozen men in the two counties have been onnsulted in thl, affair. The people of the two coun ties have not been consulted. The people ot the dlstriot have not been oonsulted. Sallna Union. Robbers' Reap Harvest from Hoarded Money For six weeks Mrs. Fred Meyer of ElDorado oarriedflve $100 caah in her waist during the daytime and hid them In her bed at night, being afraid to put the money in a bank. Satur day morning when she went to get the money it was gone. Mrs. Meyer and her husband slept in the bed from which the money was stolen. It is believed someone saw her look ing at the money before retiring, watched where (he put it and slipped in and stole it while they dept. A Sallna man tried to draw all hia wheat money from a bank but could get only ISO. This he wrapped in a deposit dip for the balanoe and lost the whole paokage. The deposit dip identified It and the finder returned It with some good advice on how to do business. An Abilene woman drew out 50 a week until she had (150 which the carried in her handbag. She lost the bag. An honest finder took it to the bank and she left the money there that time. In several town, suspicious looking person hanging around bank, hart been arrested. It I, supposed that they were watching to see who drew out money, intending to rob them. Swearing Must Stop Says City Council The oity council met Tuesday an adjournment from the regular meet ing night. The report ot the committee on the extention of East Third street to Campbell was adopted and elaima for $95 damage, were allowed. The matter of controversy over Washington street, the street leading to Harry Keel's on the weet aide of the Santa Fe track, waa referred to the eity attorney. Josiah Snyder haa a title to 20 feet of the street and Is putting it into crops, thus leaving Mr. Keel with no way to get to Third street. It will be straightened out by the attorney. The sewer committee reported the various charge, against persons and firms that have attached to the sewers aa follows: Rice, Johnta, Nlcolay Grooery Co.. S5; G. W. Hurd, 27; F. K. Smltb, (25; B. F. Brennaman, $70. Another attempt to change the bi- oycle ordinance to allow blcyole, chance on the sidewalks, under oer tain restriction at to the condition ot the streets and outside the thickly settled part, of town, is being made. The olerk was ordered to correspond with Salina and find what I, the rule there; also to find what ordinance Sa lina has against spitting on the side walks. The city attorney and marshals were ordered to enforce the ordinance against using profane language on the streets. If thia is done it la likely to land aome of our best citizens in jail. An ordinance waa adopted making the license for the running of a buoket shop $100 semi-annually; for a skat ing rink $50 annually; for telling min ing stock, $25 annually. Aa ordinenoa wt, adopted vacating the alley that rune through the city hall block. Adjourned. M. W. A. Election. Abilene camp. No. $59, M. JF. of A. elected theae offieer, bit night: T. a. Harry W.
