St. Peter attended a meeting of the Salina good roads enthusiasts Tuesday night and tried to land the job of working the roads the com. merclal club proposes to Improve. The Union says: T. St. Peter, road builder, was pres ent from Dickinson county. He is the builder of the Enterprise road, a famous stretch of road between Abi lene and Enterprise. It Is three miles long. I can make a good road as easily as I can a bad one," said St. Peter. Early in the spring is the time to put the roads into shape. First, clean out the ditches and burn the trash and then level the roads. People won't believe it, but I can make good roads faster and better with a sled than I can with a grader. All the grader is good for Is to shape the road. Then I don't touch the grader any more that year. I can easily take care of twenty- five miles of road with four teams and keep it up in season. The Enterprise road I built for $160. I made $2.50 profit on the whole Job. I built that road simply to show the peop,e what could be done in the way of road making. Inat was three years ago and since that time the road has not been toucled., let it is still in excellent condition." H. . ee, who brought Mr. St. Peter from Dickinson county, stated that he had lately driven over the Enterprise road and that It was as fine as any Kansas City boulevard. Mr. Ktrtland said he has also taken a spin over the road In an auto last fall and found It in exellent shape. At that point Fred. Quincy called attention to a new law. He said the law provided for the appointment of a county engineer to oversee all road matters in the county. The town ships, however, could limit the work as they saw fit. The county survey or may be appointed to this position. Mr. Quincy said It would be neces sary to get the consent of the town ships as well as the engineer before private contractors could take care of the road. In Saline county the road engineer has not yet been appointed. Some wanted to hire St. Peter that night to build roads. Mr. Watson and others favored, the offering of prizes. Finally on motion of Mr. Kimball, a committee consisting of H. D. Lee, W. W. Watson and F. H. Quincy was appointed to devise plans for road Improvement. These plans are to be submitted to those who subscribed to the road fund and. If the plans are satisfactory, the committee will be employed to go on with the work, How's This? Bern ITORXA. - Talus' fUmtwiMPI settled the matter of season tickets at a meeting held last evening. Sea son tickets will be sold to men good for admission to both ground and grand stand for $10. This ticket Is good for all the 35 game of the bamplonsblp series and single ad missions to all of these games would amount to $12.25. In addition to this there will be a Decoration day game and probably five first class exhibition games during the practice season before the championship ser ies opens. These extra game would cost at single admissions $2.10 more. The holder of a season ticket will al so be admitted to these games. The season ticket admits the holder to all games given by the association to the end of the championship son, so It may be seen that the man who buys a season ticket gets $14,35 worth of baseball for $10.00. " Jl Jl The association wants the support and encouragement of the fairer sex and Is making a strong bid to secure It. Ladies' season tickets carrying all the privilege of the men' season tickets will be sold for $7.60. All season tickets will be transferable but they will have a space for the signature of the owner so that ticket may be taken up at the gate In the event that it should be lost. There may be some men who do not car IV for a season ticket Including admis sion to the grand stand and It Is probable that a season ticket good for grounds wi.i be sold for $7.60; but this matter has not been positive ly decided. Jl Jl It may as well be understood first as last that with just one exception there will be no free list. The men who made baseball possible In Abl' lene guaranteed $25 to see the sea' son carried through and they have put up all of the mxney that has thus fur been called far. A certificate of stock and a season ti':ct was Usued to them. This opportunity was of fered to everyone and it is still open. Every stockholder and every officer who gets any additional tickets vill pay for them. Two tickets will be Issued to every newspaper in the county and the association will re ceive more for them thany any other tickets it disposes of. Just one free ticket will be Issued and that one will go to R. W. Hoffman, of Enter prise, president of the league. The association will conduct a cotf-'l test and will give two prizes, $10 In gold and one season ticket, to the two ladles turning in the largest amount of money from the sale of season tickets. A commission wlii also be paid on each ticket sold. Full details of the. contest will be an. nounced later. Jt J The association has now the sig natures of about fifteen players on contracts and there are two or three contracts out that have not yet been returned " The board of directors Is much pleased with present conditions. Jl Jl The Junction City management Is Interested in knowing how the re port started that there I a chance that Doherty, the Fort Riley pitcher, win play with either Abilene or Sa lina. Doherty will pitch for the Junction City team and will make trouble for both Abilene and Salina during the season. , Jl Jl Salina Union: One thing can be said In favor of Abilene; it will have a lot of enthusiastic and pretty girls who will fight to a finish for that team. A Union reporter met a bunch of Abilene girls Sunday and they were absolutely baseball crazy. Tbey were willing to bet anything that Abilene would win the pennant. Jl Jl " Salina Journal: If Abilene can put out as good a league team a It ha in the high school line, the others had better look out That kid team I setting too fast a gait for the other teams of its class. Of course It may be due to Sommeri, who will play with Ellsworth this summer. Jl Jl Sommers, who will catch for Ells worth this year, Is receiving more ad vertislng in the C. K. league papers than any othej player on the circuit. Jl .Jl President Hoffman of the Central Kansas league, has written the man agers of the Salina team that they need not worry about exhibition games. "I' will have all you want," said Mr. Hoffman. This means that he I aow In correspondece with a number of team who want to play at the opening of the season here; Jl Jl Wanted at Abilene, Kan., in the K. league, a left handed pitcher. Must hare bad professional exper ience. Writ to F. B. Beagle, Mgr. Jl Jl It I noticeable that then art no college player In the StaU league. The State season opens too early In June and the college players will hardly have time to get out of condition before tbey will be playing every day. Jl Jl The Abilene management has a new scheme. Its players will also play In the band. Thus the league and the band will sort of go "havers" on expenses, making a saving for each side. Jl Jl It will probably be pretty dull In Mid-Kaw baseball circles now until the players begin to report for prac tice. Most of tne team have sign ed practically all the men they ex pect to use, for the first few weeks of the season anyway, so the dope writers over the circuit will have lit tle or nothing on which to work un til the practice season begins. Jl Jl Salina Union: The press and preachers only will be given passes In the Central Kansas league. Fav orites will have to pay the same as other people. The courtesy of a pass Is generally extended to minis ters while, because of the fact that the press Is compelled to properly report the games, It Is only fair that tbey shduld receive passes. And they give. In free writeups, a whole lot more than their ticket would cost. Jl Jl Junction City Is to hare a tip top official scorer. Tom Dorn ha been named for the place by President Hoffman, at the recommendation of officials of the local association. Dorn 1 a thorough fan and has been a clow student of the game for many year. He will be an nnusuany com petent official scorer. Mr. Hoffman seem to have the faculty of getting exactly the right men for the official I positions and he I exactly the right man for the place he hold. Jl Jl The player are perhaps more in terested In the selection of official scorers than are the fans. The scor ers make up the records from which the Individual fielding and batting averages are figured for the season. These averages are looked to by man ager the country over as Indicating the class of the players. However, there are a few exception to this proposition as a general rule. Oc caslonally a man compiles a batting average of 350 In one of the minor leagues. He goes higher and It de velops that 225 really expresses his altual batting speed. The reason is easy. He has been a favorite with one of two scorers In the lower lea gue class and tbey bare been credit ing with safe hits, when instead some fielder on the opposing team should have been charged with an error. When the scoring rule are fairly applied to the batting of the favorite player his average shrinks and he soon goes back to the brush league In which his average was pad ded. It I to be hoped that there will be a minimum of that sort of work on this curcult. junction uuy un ion. Jl Jl I'd like to be a pitcher, and on the Diamond stand, a cap upon my Fore head, a Ball within my Hand. Before Applauding Thousands, I'd throw Contortion would mark my Every the Curving Sphere, and from the eye of Batsmen, bring forth the Briny Tear. I'd make my Occupa tion a thing of Pomp and Dread; I'd tie Myself In Bow-knots, and stand upon my Head; string of WUd Throw, and all the Fan would Mur mur: "Oh, ulrii, am i ne a joi Ana when I left the Diamond, on Rest or Pleasure Bent the Kid would trail behind me, and Worship a they went; and all the Sporty Grownups would say: "He's warm Enough I" and Fair and Cultured Ladle would cry: "H I th Stuff!" I'd Ilk to be a Pitcher, while I remain Be low; by day to Gather Garland, by night to Count the Dough. Walt Mason. Jl J The Abilene Reflector has a de partment, "In Baseball Circles."
