WHY HE LIKES KANSAS. 7 Kansas Is a good place to live in because of its agrl- "cultural, mining and manu-, facturihg resources. It has a healthful and comfortable climate. The people have high ideals and are icon- tantly striving to,, reach them. The educational sys, ' tem is, excellent and pro-; Kressive. and the moral, and religious character Is high. 'The community life is fine; it is free from the evils of , over-crowded populations. , The beautiful homes and wholesome family life make Kansas an ideal place lor ' rearing ch)lldren. IWliile l Kansas has been credited with a number of political fakers, there is no state In the Union that excels' It in sane politics, progressive and just government, and , wise laws for the promotion of health, the protection of life and property, and the estab-; lishment of justice among- the people. F. K. Blackmar, Prof. Sociology and Econo- mics, University of Kansas. .. M"'v ' 7 . ; THE PROPHETS, AT HOME, One of the curious things about Tuesday's election in ,Kansas is that the home counties of the leading Bull Moosers all went back on them Douglas county, the home of Gov ernor Stubbs,. though It gave Capper a majority of over 600, gave Judge Thompson a majority of 89. Lyon county, the home of William Allen White, national, committeeman for the Bull Moose party, gave a ma jority of 198 . for , the , Democratic candidate for congress. 7 Waubaun- lsee county, home of Joe Dolley, gave the .Democratic candidate for con; gress a majority of 85. Saline county, the home of Senator Bris tow, gave the Democratic candidate for congress a majority of 816. Greenwood county, home of Frea S. Jackson who Is chairman of the Republican party council . made . Bull Moose speech that greatly of fended every Republican in the state, went back on him and gave a majority of 180 for his opponent for congress. Sedgwick county! home of Victor Murdock and Henry J. Allen, gave a majority of 334 for Hodges. Leavenworth . Times. among ,the rare and - transcendent few who lead the national advance -should - with deliberate . purpose trade a national figure for an un fledged and unknown quality to stand up and speak for Kansas In the loftiest powered legislative con stellation that shines In our govern mental firmament, astounds with Its startllngness," Really we . didn't know It was aa bad as that ' The .country roads of Dickinson county have improved SOner cent in iwo yara. . Of course they will be on the list just as the men -are, and they will have to "take their medicine just as the men do. - The rule of the courts is that a juror shall not be excused merely because he busy, or has lots of work on his handa. Every, man Is supposed to be busy, and to have lots of work. so, when. a woman Is drawn on a jury, the fact that the floors are un swept, her beds unmade and her meals uncooked, will not be suffi cient excuse -for her io get off the" jury,. It is doubtful If even the crying of the baby will soften the hearts of some stony judges. Law rence Gazette. Right off the bat a correspondent of the Capital springs this wail: "That Stubbs 'should be defeated at the hands of the Kansans whom he has served with all a strong man's strenuous ardor this decade of pro gressive years that Kansaa should deliberately cast aside the mightiest factor for political righteousness to whom she has given birth la a gen eration; that tie should cast ia the eoBtempUWe CieV cf defeat that est 9 t f It tens tro tU.?i a pT't WHY HK LIKES KANSAS. Kansas has been criticised, but here are some facts very much in her favor": , There are , over 600,000 boys in Kansas, over school age, who have never seen a saloon. Out of 105 counties in the state 80 have not a single tenant In poor bouses, and 62 counties do not even own a poor-farm. There are 61 counties without an . in mate in their jails, 17 coun ties without Jails, and there are 87 counties that last year, did not send an Inmate to the Insane .asylum. Kansas has 900 newspapers that will not take a liquor advertisement, and her ratio of Illiteracy is the lowest of any state in the Union. - Mankato , Minn, Journal. ' . , ... RIGHT! - 7 Get up right in the, morning. Go to bed right at night. Start with joy. in your heart, hope in the fu ture, kindness, In your purpose. If ,it is a dark day, never mind; you will lighten It up. If It is a bright day, you will' add to the brightness. Give a word of cheer, a kindly greeting and a warm hand shake to your friends. Try It!: " s V. "r. NOT ROOM FOB BOTH. "; Men of principles like W. A, White have no place In the same party with such men as J. S. Dean.. Men like Gov. .Stubbs have no place in the same party with pave Mulvane. The writer of this has no place In ft party with Charlie Scott. They may be Just as honest as we are but their ideas pi government are not advanced. J. L. Brady, In Law rence Journal. ' No, "their Ideas of government are not advanced" to the point where they believe that representative government' should be discarded; that constitutions should be as eas ily Amended as statutes; that the majority of those voting on a given proposition, however small a min ority that might be of the whole number of people, should be su preme, over-riding both courts and constitutions; that the . legislative and Judicial branches Of the govern ment, which are now co-ordinate, should be made subordinate to the executive; that the courts should be required to consult, not the law and the precedents, nor even the justice of the causes, but the election re turns. .In a word ;Mr. Dean, Mr, Mulvane and Mr. Scott believe In government of laws and not of men; they believe that this nation should be kept a representative - republic not changed Into a Socialistic demo cracy. Their Ideas of government have not "advanced" to the point where they wish to subvert" the sys tem of government which was de vised by the fathers and which was embodied In an Instrument which Gladstone declared to be "the most wonderful work ever struck off at a given time oy . tne Drain and pur pose of man." . . .'; ' Mr. Brady (s right, frhe man who can give .his endorsement to the heresies and ragaries of the '"Progressive" platform from the initiative, referendum and recall to the Third Term, "has no place in a party with Charlie Scott" and we are glad he recognizes the fact.. And that is equivalent to saying, we trust our friend will take notice, that he has no place In the Repub lican party. For Charley Scott is In absolute harmony with the platform of the National Republican party which is the only Republican party there Is and Itr. Erady is not. '-' r -'. tv"----e, r-t his political abiding place, for he feels perfectly at . home In the Re- y publican party.'
