Local Backfield Work Drought lCay " Victory, irtom Bkittrdky Ootlr 1 Abilene smothered the Enterprise eleven under five' touchdowns and one goal! following touchdown, 31 points, yesterday, in the opening game of the local football season. Enterprise counted seven. The stel lar work of the Abilene backtield was the factor that brought the vie- tory to the home talent. Time and again Carver slipped around the end for gains that took away all the advantage that Enterprise's hard work and clever handling of the for ward pass gave their hopes. Garver made three touchdowns, Ross made one and Kyle one. Garver kicked one goal from the lot. Puntouts tailed to be good on some of the trials. t The most noteworthy thing about the game was the splendid Interfer ence that the local backfield offered on offense. They way they dumped opponents did credit to a big school eleven. They hit hard and seldom failed to clear the way for a runner to circle the ends for a good gain. The Abilene line, outweighing the opponents, leaked at times and seemed unable to charge low and hard enough to stay the attacks of the lighter Enterprise backs. On' offense more than once Enterprise linemen sifted through and dumped plays before they were well started. Nor could the Abilene backs rip the opposing line with anything like consistency. It was the splendid work of the Abilene backs in form ing a rpekbound interference that told the story of a win. Enterprise took the advantage at the Jump by kicking well with the wind. The game seesawed back and forth, in the first quarter without either side scoring. In the second period successive spurts by Garver carried the ball over, the line for the first touchdown. ,The puntout fail ed. Enterprise kicked to Abilene. Garver scooted around left end for another touchdown and kicked the goal. In the third quarter Ross sped around the end for 30 yards and then again skirted the wings for1 a touchdown. Goal failed. Later on, successive runs put the ball Into Enterprise' territory and Kyle plugg ed through for the last touchdown made by Abilene. Goal failed. In the last quarter, Enterprise opened up with an array of forward pass formations that bewildered Abi lene. Successive passes lo D. Jones netted good gains. A long pass of 20 yards to D. Jones gave the fleet half a chance to score on a 45-yard run. Goal was kicked. D. Jones, and Wentzel starred for the visitors. The Abilene backfield went best for Abilene. Albert DefTen cherishes a feeling of animosity toward the United States, due, he said last night, to the Interference of this country tn the affairs of the country below the Rio Grande. Last night, Delfen, a native of Mexlop, offered to whip the whole United States, backing up his nerve with a liberal amount of booze. Officer Tom Edmundson, who was near the merry-go-round when Delfen began to address his offers to the crowd In general, offered as a representative of the country and took Delfen to jail. Even then he had not quieted down, but got to thrashing around and shoved his rlgnf arm through a window, cutting himself severely in several places.' A physician had to be called to attend to him. He was brought before Judge Porter this morning and pleaded guilty to a charge of being drunk and disor derly. He was fined $5 and costs, amounting to $13.50. He; lacked the amount and was taken back to jail.
