A AffllG V "A Time like this. demands Strong ind Great Hearts, True Taith and Ready Hands." Vol.21. No. 8. KINSLEY, EDWARDS COUNTY, KANSAS, DECEMBER, 17, 1897. By J. M. Lewis, Jr. i . PENSIOiNS. During1 the reign of Grover I, many attempts were made to purge the pen sion lists of those unworthy and not entitled to the. bounty of the govern ment. Every euch attempt was greeted by the republican speakers and press as an attack on the loyal veteran, the bloody shirt was frantically waved aloft and all old soldiers and their friends were urged to join hands with the republican party and help it put down the tyrant and his cohorts, who, if not checked at once, would deprive every aged and infirm veteran of bis just reward. Remembering all these things, wc are amazed to see that an effort in being made by the present ad ministration to do the same thing. The fact is that this is simply a matter of business and should have beea at tended to long ago. The loyal veteran who -is justly entitled to a pension, does not want to see a fradulent pen sion paid, and it is to be hoped that it will no longer be used as campaign thunder by the republicans. No dem ocratic, republican or populist plat form has ever been adopted containing a plank reff erring to - the old soldiers, that did not demand just and liberal pensions for the deserving, and the republican party no more contains all of the friends of the old soldiers than does the democratic or populist. This nation is a unit in its demands for not only justice but liberality. So let us have done with cant and hypouracy and admit what we all know to be true: that the question of pensions is not a party one, and join hands in exposing fraud, even though it ba in the pension list. One of the questions that is agitat ing the statesmen of this country is the annexation of Hawaii. The Graphic is furninst. Outlying territory means a largely increased navy and an increace in the standing army, with many new foreign complications. We are in favor of these United States as they stand, and no more new territory unless it lies adjoining that which we now have. KiickMm'si A mien ya.lv.
