A thrifty female squirrel in south eastern Kansas, who was bleeped with a large family of children, gathered her off-spring together and' said: "My children, next week we must becriu to gather our winter stores." And the young squirrels who did not read the papers, cried out as with one voice, saying "Why mother, we cannot gather nuts until after frost." But the old squirrel simply winked her eye Boftly with the air of one who knows, and 8 aid: 'Children, I see that you are not on. I have just been reading a poster on the fence down the road announcing that there will be a repub lican meeting in this grove next Mon day afternoon." Ex. mismanazers: there aie others. The editor of the Kinsley "Mercury, in criticising McNall in his last issue made a correct statement, but his statement was misleadme .in that it was not complete. He correctly stated that McNall turned into the state treasury for1 the year 1897, forty-one thousand and some odd dollars, and that Anthouy in the year 1895, turned in forty-five thousand and some odd dollars, leaving his readers to infer that Anthony had collected about $4000 0 more in 1895 tnaa McNall in 1897. ' The facts in the case as shown by reports of the Insurance Commission era are that for the year 1897, McNall collected $74,712.25. The difference between the amounts collected and the amount turned into the state treasury is $33,490.79. You see by these fig ures that McNall collected a very much larger sum than the sum collect ed by Mr. Anthony, but Mb. Anthony turned the most money into the - state treasury. The question then najturally copes, up as to what became of this thirty three thousand and some odd dollars, the difference between the amount col lected by McNall and turned into thi treasury. Right here I want my friend of the Mercury to make a note of the fact that this money, as the records of thtP Insurance Commiss ioners office show - was distributed to the Firemen's Relief Fund of the state of Kansas. We make this correction, not with the view to criticising the editor of the Mercury, that is , unnecessary. he being a lawyer by profession whose business it is to make a good case for his client, in this case the republican party. , The full facts in the case are as stated: Mr. McNall collected in his first year's business for the state of Kansas, over $74,000, all of which is satifactorally accounted for in his annual report recently published, and Mr. Anthony collected, from all sources the sum of forty-five thousand and some odd dollars in the first year of the business of the office under his control. If our republican friends can make any capital out of this item that will reflect on the administration OUR REPRESENT AVIVE. A few; reasons why you should vote for Malin for representative: lst. Because he is a good reliable man.a 2nd. Because he made a good representative. 3rd. Because he is a farmer. Tha back-boue and sinew of Kansas hoi farming class. We are distibctly an Agrarian commonwealth and bin iptercsts principally agricultural. Mr. Beezley isa lawyer. The busi ness of a lawyer is to live upon the people. Mr. Mafia is, interested iu bringing about better conditions of I industry. Mr. Beeale.v in his pro- j fo?siona,l capacity a a lawyer is in terested in' turning things over to the corporations and, then being pad by men to redress the wrongs he has helped to inflict upon them. 4th. Because the republican paper in tne county indirectly called Mr. Malm a fool. All decent citizens should resent this S04I ef campaign material. Mr. Malin is one of our substantial citizens, a man of honor intelligence and integrity. t Perkaps the editor regards tBe farmers as a class of f oois. We" hope not. The Mercury write-up of the- popu list convention illustrates pretty well to what straits the republicans are driven for something to say. against the populist candidates. Having ab solutely nothing to say against the character or qualifications of any of the candidates which would bear any semblance t to the truth, they pro ceed to "down" Messrs Clark and Fravel on the ground that they are not resident of this county. The Mercury did not state what constitutes a residency , but it seems to us that if Clark and Fravel are ineli gible to office on the ground of being non-residents, our present post-master who was boomed for office before he had "fairly got the travel stains brushed off his "clothes, is about as much entitled to his office as an abo rigine of the Sandwich Islands. Same with our county clerk. However, we do" not go On the theory that one wrong rights another, and we are noi making the comparison by way of an excuse lor uars aua r ravel lor no excuse is neccessary we're simply giving an example of how convenient ly a republican ad justs his principle to suit the occasion. The fact is, Mr, Fravel has been a resident of this county for nine years with the excep tion of two years which hd spent on a farm in Ford county. Mr. Clark has taught school in this county for six year and has lived here continuously during t&at time with he exception of the time he has spent at the State Nor raal and occasional visits to bis fa ther who lives in Pawnee county. He is a teacher and holds a certificate, somethtng of which his opponent cannot boast, and which fact the Mer oury eonveaiently forgo; to mention. Altogether the article was a pretty good scarecrow considering the scar city of material from wich t make it, but we fear the effect will exjloue the old theory that "re-action is equal 1 o fiction in the contrary direction'7 for in this case ro action seems to have a down hill pull. The other day Webb McNall was going to one of his appointments and he ran across Mortf Albaugh on the train.. Mort inquired whether he had noticed the long list of populists who were coming over to the republican side. Webb replied, that he saw a re port one dayjhat John H. Smith had gone over. The next day J. H. Smith was reported. Shortly after J. Henry Smith was added tothe list, and he expected that John .Henry Smith would fall in line also. Advocate. The republicans all over the state have practically' given up the election of their state ticket, and are concen trating all their strength on a fight for representatives. So dont forget that James Malin will tfava the heft of the county fight in this campaign. We think we may safely. say plucked by Alger tho mat! who has subjected thousands of bra ve American soldiers to fever, neglect and starvation in oltler to make a political matter of the war. TIiU 'owor of patriotism" is like to wither rapidly as the gaunt feveiv atricken soldiers come 'home to reyeal the methods of the administration in dealing with the men who volunteered to go forth in the natron's wervfee. The resolutions passed at therepub lican conveation severely condemn the yellow journals who are after the McKinley and Alger war record. Among the so-called "yellow jour nals" are the Jew Yorjc Herald, ! World, and Tribune Harper's Week ly, Scientific American, Chicago Times-Herald and Dispatch. . The Kansas City Star, and. the Kinsley Graphic. If .these are yellow jour nals, the epithet must be an; honorable one. The Mercury last week attempted, to be funny. It says that Malin was a weak candidate two years ago and has been growing weaker ever since. He had strength enoug-h two years ago to defeat Mr. Beezley so how about the weakness "of the republican can didate. He A'ill jH'obably have an attack of the sam-j kind of weak ness (l') again this November. When the investigation commences as to the cause of the suffering among. our soldiers in camp, the republican press will be mighty busy with the Dreyfus affair.' .0 A SLUGGISH BRAiN Is caused by Imperfect o in the Liver XlFBICKLY AS IS A BOON TO It purifies the bowels, strengthens ad regrules the Vtvtt, aids digestion, promotes vigor of body, cneeriulaess and X 8OLD BY ALL DRUGGISTS V S S PORTER MISNER & KENNEDY, ... . .
