The pruss bureaus of both parties in Kansas are now kept busy and the same political editorial can be seen in all the exchanges, where the editor has not the backlor.e to write his own editorials. Li!e the medicine ad "He cured my boy,' when the truth is the editor has no ?on, they are all girl3 in his family. Out in Wallace county some of the defeated at the late primaries demand ed a new count of the ballots, so many having1 been thrown out, and they wanted the expressed desire o f the voters to count. So it was made and showed neither excelled in ignorance in making defective ballots, both sides having1 been eareles?, and the result remained the same as first announced "Hoxie has a girls' basket ball team that offers a puree of $150.00 to any girls basket ball team in the state that will come here and win two out of three. In accepting these terms, the visiting team must pay its own expenses." Hoxie Sentinel. The citizens there might, at least, offer to entertain the visiting girls at their homes. It would be more social. If the visiting girls pay thn'r railroad fare that should be risk enough. While at Hays City Monday we met Charley Hertline who has a good posi tion with a mercantile house at that place. George and Fred Huttie are busily engaged in helping to erect a 1000 barrel flouring mill at that place. Lee R. Light is Principal of the Hays City Public Schools and has met with nice success. Monday was Labor Day a public holiday so there was no school but. TueFday morning: the bell of the Public School rang and from every direction trooned the children for another siege with the books and pencils. The Jonah Nulton new residence in the south east part of town, near the Presbyterian parsonage, looms up with its two Rtoriep, and will be a big im provement to our city. Down at Wilson ALL the stores close at 6:30 every night but Saturday and everybody seems pleased with the arrangement. In our western counties the price of land has been high, much land sold, and many have invested the surplus money received in buying Autos and at every station many are seen on the arrival of the trains. With all the reports of bad crops in western Kansas this year, the friends of Queenie Cox Wilson will be glad to hear that they have been in luck at their farm home in Gove county, south o f Grinnell, having fine wheat and hundreds of tons of all kinds of feed for stock. Mitchell county this week paid off its $50,000 of 30 year bonds, issued to help build a railroad then and now the county has no bonded debt. Good for Old Mitchell. The Wallace County Times says: "M. A. Starkey, of Morton twp. is employed at the State Agricultural Experiment Station at Hays City Prof. Haa3 and wife arrived Tuesday morning and will be ready for school Monday morning." Mr. Haa3 is prin cipal of the Sharon Springs school. The following local from the Clear field Co., Penn. Leader shows that our city is heard of way back east: "George W. Drake, formerly of this place will please accept thanks for a book of views and a copy of the "Hays Free Press," published at Hays, Kansas." Western Kansas is not alone in the dry belt this year the press dispatches have this: DROUGHT IN PENNSYLVANIA. Farmers Are Hauling Water in Bar rells Many Industries Suspend. Pittsburg, Sept. 4. Most everyone has heard of t.he Western Branch of the State Normal at Hays City. To the average person it is thought to be a very small school and not overly capable of giving ad vanced instruction. A trip through the experimental farm and the two fine buildings of the school will cause a change of countenance. Th visitor 13 surprised at the elegant appointments of the buildings and grounds. The school could not be located on a prettier or more commanding view. The grounds are not as yet thoroughly de veloped but are in very nice condition. The main building is equipped with fine large, airy, recitation rooms and ele gant assembly room, the finest in the west half of Kansas, splendid Iabra torie3, a fine library, and all together it looked mighty inviting. The main building has three stories and a base ment. Thirteen instructors are em ployed and is expected that the atten dance this year will pass the four hun dred mark. The Gymnasium in the vernacular of the students is a "dan dy." It is in a separate building from the main building and was erected at a very great cost for the convenience of the student?. The athletic field is near the main building and is splendidly ap pointed. Profs. Beach and Christenson showed us around over the buildings. Prof. Picken was too busy enrolling students for the coming term to have anything to do with visitors. The school is a splendid one espe cially fcr Western Kansas. Hays City and Western Kansas ought to be proud of it. It gives the young men and young women from this part of the state a chance to get advanced train ing close to home. A number of Logan County students are there at this time and during the summer months the enollment from this county was as high as 15. It is a good school and we want to see more of the boys and girls take aduantage of it. Notice for Publication, A'. OIU5. Department of the Interior, U- S. Laud Office at Colby, Kansas.
