Bailey, President, Allen Cam paign Committee, Atchison, Ks. 'Dear Mr. Bailey: I have read the printed report of your speech in which you say that Mr. Allen is doing a wonderful work for the Red Cross and that he is so great a man that he towers above all other candidates for Governor. You have impressed me, but I would like to have you answer a few questions, so that I may understand the exact facts. Is it true that Mr. Allen was presented the alternative by the Red Cross of continuaing his wonderful work or refraining from his candidacy for office? This is the statement made by the American Red Cross itself in a bulletin issued July 15th. Is it true that Mr. Allen gave up his wonderful work and preferred to be a candidate for office? What do you think of a man who prefers a political job to an opportunity or ser .vice at this time, and is this an evi dence of hs greatness? You will realize that I have an opinion on this subject which 1 have made from my own knowledge of the situation and I am very anxious to have you explain the manner in which you reach your conclusion. What We Fight For The high aims of America and her allies are well expressed in President Wilson's greeting to France on Bas tile day: "As France celebrated our Fourth of July, so do we celebrate her Four teenth, keenly conscious of Ii com radeship of arms and of purpose of which we are deeply proud. The sea seems very narrow today, France is so close neighbor to our hearts. The war is being fought to save ourselve from intolerable thines. but it is also being fought to save mankind. We ex tend our hands to each other, to the great peoples with whom we are as sociated, and to the people every where who love right and prize jus tics as a tmng Deyond price and con secrate ourselves once more to the noble enterprise of peace and justice- reaming the great conceptions tha "have lifted France and America high among the tree peoples of the world The French flag flies today from the staff of the White House and Amer ica is happy to do honor to the flag Von Hindenburg's Aunt a Genuii American Von Hindenburg, the German lea der, has-an aunt in Rochester, N. The People and War Taxes More than 3,500,000,000 has bee:? collected In internal revenue taxes, including income and excess-profits taxes for the fiscal year. This exceeds by over 100,000,000 the estimates made a few months ago, and by over $200,000,000 the estimates made a year ago when the revenue measures were passed by Congress. The success in collecting this large revenue is attributed by the Treas ury Department to the patriotism and co-operation of the American pepole in promptly and cheerfully meeting the waA burdens imposed upon them.
