(Prepared by the United States Depart ment of Agriculture.) That it Is possible to feed beef cows in the corn belt more economically dar ing the winter is shown by a report of United States department of agri culture investigators who made a study of winter feeding costs on five repre sentative farms in that section. This reduction in the cost of feeding is pos sible without detriment to the cows or calves through larger useof farm by products in the rations. Avoid feeding excessively, avoid cost ly rations, use more cheap roughages, such as straw and corn stover, feed si lage where conditions make it more economical than corn fodder. The first farm used as an example Is In east central Iowa. The breeding herd consisted of a grade bull and 22 grade cows, from which 20 calves were obtained. The cows were given exces sive amounts of high-priced feed for both of the years for which records were procured, says the bulletin. They were turned on stalks Novem ber 15. Winter feeding began a few days later and lasted until May 1, when the cows were again turned on pasture. During the 165-day interval each cow received the following: Stalks .1 1-5 acres at $1 an acre. Fodder .2-5 acre, at $35 n acre. Mixed hay i ton, at $10 a ton. Corn 2 bus. at $0.63 a bu. As the average yield of corn on this farm was 50 bushels to the acre, and as the best corn was cut for fodder, the cows, considering the corn in the fodder and the additional grain fed, received a total of 22 bushels per head. This Is almost a fattening ration. If the corn had been husked from the fodder and only the stover fed, there would have been sufficient roughage for the cows. Estimating that three fourths of a ton of stover was eaten per acre of stalks and that the stover from the fodder fed would go two tons to the acre, and allowing the cows three bushels of corn each during the winter Instead of 22, they would re ceive the following dally ration: Stover 20.6 pounds Mixed hay 9.0 pounds Corn 1-0 pound This ration would be sufficient for their needs. By merely eliminating the excessive amount of corn (19 bushels) from the ration a saving of $11.40 could have been made and the feed bill reduced very nearly one-half, or from $24 to $12.60 per cow. Rations on the fifth farm inspected by the investigators are pronounced very satisfactory. This farm (240 acres) is in northeastern Kansas. Sev enty acres were in corn, 25 in oats, 25 in wheat, and 100 In pasture. Be cause of the unusual rainy weather L ... Beef Cattle on Pasture. prevailing in-that section the oats and wheat for the year in which the record was taken were practically destroyed and the straw was absolutely worth less for feeding. To provide for a lack of hay 15 acres of millet and four of frghum were grown. The herd consisted of a bull and 15 grade cows, from which 15 calves were obtained. The cows were turned on fetalks November 1 and allowed to run there until spring. They received ap proximately three acres of stalks, one ton of millet hay, and one-third of a ton of sorghum fodder each. Valuing the millet at $4.50 a ton and the sorghum at $4 a ton. the winter feed cost per cow was $8.20. The cows were carried through the entire year for a net! cost of $25.85. GOOD QUALITIES , OF SHEEP They Compare Favorably With Other - Animals in Economy of Produc tion Keep Weeds Down. Sheep can be made profitable on high-priced land, it is said, as British experience shows. They compare fa vorably with other animals in econ omy of production. They require a minimum of expensive concentrated feeds. They exceed the larger ani mals in the rate of maturity; lambs can be made ready for market at from four to six months. They make pos sible the economical and fuller use of labor. They are of assistance In keep ing the farms free from weeds. The sheep farm is usually a weedless farm. Profit in Beef Calves. Those who have considerable pas ture land might find it profitable to raise a few calves every year of the beef type. Wintering - Brood Sow. The two principal essentials in win tering brood sows are to give them plenty of bulky feed and plenty of ex ercise. Beef Cattle in Demand. Beef cattle are scarce and doubtless will bring higher prices. - ' ROAD BUILDERS ARE NEEDED Opportunities for Returned Soldie Both Skilled and Unskilled Labor Required. EXPENSE OF CONCRETE ROAD Average Cost for Surface Only Esti mated at. About $12,300 Per Mile Filling Cracks. (By A. W. DEAN. Chief Engineer Mass. Highway Commission.) The average cost of a concrete sur face, 15 feet wide, not Including grad ing, drainage, culvert work, etc, but including the concrete surface only, Is about $12,300 per mile, according to contract prices under which con crete roads have been constructed by this commission. Of course, the cost of grading, drainage, culverts, eta, will vary greatly. So far as the concrete surface be coming more or less cracked and full of holes after three or four years Is concerned, I would state it Is true that it cracks to a certain extent, but if properly built, with expansion joints, no -holes will appear, and very few cracks, and the cost of filling the cracks with bitumen Is very slight. . GOOD GARDEN IS BIG ASSET Useful for Fresh Vegetables and Sur plus May Be Stored for Use During Winter. A. good garden is very useful for fresh vegetables. Where there Is a surplus the vegetables may be stored and saved for future use. In this way you may have nice vegetables, easily and quickly served In winter. The result will be better and cheaper living from the farm. An Inch of Rain. An inch of rain coming down on a single acre of ground would fill more. than 600 barrels of 45 gallons capacity each. (Prepared by the United States Depart ment of Agriculture.) Since the use of meritorious pure bred bulls is the means by which mem bers of a bull association expect to improve their live stock, one of the many important considerations is the selection of the bulls. Such bulls improve the herds, and the associa tion interest increases in proportion to the Improvement obtained. On the other hand, poor bulls cause the in terest to decrease accordingly. If a poor dairy bull is used the milk pro duction of the members herds is great ly reduced, the interest is lessened, and these conditions may lead to the breaking up of the association. Un fortunately, an excellent dairy bull can be selected with certainty only when his daughters records are known. Such a tried or tested bull can be depended upon with great certainty to cause improvement in the herds in the bull association. The owner of a tried bull, however, usually knows the record of the animal's daughters and rightfully asks a high price for him. The high cost often makes the members hesitate to purchase such bulls for the association, and instead they buy younger and untried bulls whose ancestors have made good pro duction records. No bulls should be purchased for an association except from one of these two classes. Con sidering the records of ancestors, the most important are those of the sire and dam. In the case of the sire, pro duction Tecord Is taken as the average of all his daughters records. Very often the records of some of the an cestors are lacking, but every effort should be made to obtain bulls whose ancestors In the first two generations have an average yearly record of at least 400 pounds of butterfat at ma turity. The state agricultural college may be in a position to assist in looking up pedigrees and records and always should be consulted. As soon as the money can be provided for the pur pose. It is advisable for the associa tion to obtain a set of "Advanced Regis ter" or "Register of Merit" books and, if possible, a set of breed registry books of the breed used, both of which are valuable for reference to all the members of the association. In formation In regard to the cost of "Ad vanced Register" and breed-registry books may be obtained from the breed associations as follows: American Jersey Cattle club, 324 West Twenty-third street. New York, N. Y. American Guernsey Cattle club, Pe tersboro, N. HJ Holstein-Friesian Association of America, Brattleboro, Vt. Ayrshire Breeders association, Bran don, Vt. Brown-Swiss Cattle Breeders asso ciation, Beloit, Wis. In choosing the bulls careful atten tion should be given to the line of A Good "Head" of the Herd. ' breeding represented in their pedi grees. Efforts should be made to se lect bulls that have the same family lines in order that line breeding may be practiced when the bulls are ex changed. Before the bulls are finally purchased plenty, of time should be given to selecting the line of breeding desired. Although records of production are of great importance. It Is very neces sary also that the bulls selected have plenty of strength, great vigor and good body conformation. If the mem bers are not experienced in buying cattle, it is well to ask the state agri cultural college for advice and. assist ance in making the selection. In buying bulls special care should be taken to see that the animals chosen are healthy and especially that they are free from the infection of either tuberculosis or contagious abor tion. If possible the bulls should be purchased from herds accredited by the bureau of animal industry as be ing free from tuberculosis. A list of such herds may be obtained from the bureau.' If it is impossible to buy from an accredited herd purchase from a breeder who will furnish satisfactory evidence that the animals have passed the tuberculin "test and have never reacted to that test. Freshen Cows in Fall. When the milk is sold to a whole milk market, it may be more profitable to have the cows freshen in the fall, since prices for whole milk are usually higher in winter. Keep Cows in Barn. Keep cows in the barn during, bad weather. Water at least twice a day. Brush Cows Weekly.
