MADDEN Land Government Bonds Bought and Sold Hays, - Kansas In the development of a wheat country or any grain growing section the marketing features are of most vital importance. Without closeby markets the farmers are to such an expense in their efforts to realize from their production that their entire profit is consumed. . It is then to the Hays City Flour Mills that much credit goes for the making of this section of Western Kansas such a successful wheat growing one. The mill has maintained a steady and substantial market since its establishment in 1908 and has provided ele vators along the Union Pacific railroad both east and west of Hays, for the purpose of buying and shipping of grain which is all shipped to Hays and grounded into the now growing famous Kansas Hard Wheat Flour. The mill is one of the largest and most modern in the wheat growing sections of Western Kansas. It was originally constructed at an approximate cost of $150,000.00. The very best modern milling ma chinery to be secured anywhere on the market was installed at the time of its construction and has been added to from time to time as scientific improvements were perfected. Today there is not a brand of flour in this sec tion as well known as Semolino, which is as perfect a flour as can be found on the market and milled here by expert millers who have spent a lifetime in the milling business. Through such progressive institutions as the Hays City Flour Mills the Kansas Hard Wheat "Flour has been placed on a much higher plain. For many years Kansas Hard Wheat or any other hard wheat was not considered as good for flour as some of the soft wheats milled by the larger nationally known milling institutions of the United States. The World War served to show the people of the United States the superiority of hard wheat flour and since that time its popularity has been growing. The reader may get some idea of the importance of this institution to the wheat growing industry in this section of Kansas and throughout the wheat belt when it is stated that last year 1,125,000 bushels of wheat were ground into flour and its by-products. From this amount of wheat 250,000 barrels of flour were produced as well as many pounds of the other products manufactured which include bran, shorts, corn meal. The plant has a capacity of 1,000 barrels every twentyfour hours and is under ordinary condi tions operating to its full capacity day and night. Located on the right of way of the Union Pacific rail road and within half a block of the station this mam moth industrial institution makes a very favorable metropolitan appearance to travelers on the main line of this railroad. The Hays City Mills maintains buying grain ele vators at Walker, Victoria, Toulon, Hays, Hogback, Ellis, Riga, Ogallah, Collyer, WaKeeney, Park, Oak ley, which in itself shows the importance of the insti tution for the maintenance of a market. All wheat is graded at each elevator and choice wheat varieties are selected for the mill. The work of construction of a $40,000.00 concrete elevator at Collyer has just recently been completed. In addition to its many other advantages to the upbuilding of the city and Western Kansas this insti tution employs at all times from twenty-five to thirty men in the mill proper and eight men in the offices, which gives the city one of its largest payrolls which amounts to approximately $5,000 monthly. The smallest amount of the product manufac tured at this mill is distributed in Hays or approx imately two and one-half per cent while the balance is shipped to other Kansas points, eastern states and some goes to export. Taken all in all this is one of the largest and most successful industrial plants along the Union Pacific railroad between Salina and Denver and is a credit to the city and county wherein it is located.
