THE DODGE CITY TIMES. DODGE CITY. THURSDAY. SEPT. 8. CB8CEIITION: 2 09 per year, in advance. If. B. BLAINE. B4ltr sua PnbUhher. Four comet, an Indian war, m dtoulb, abort crop), an assassination, and thirty-two drcnaas, and yet no panic Toil ii a great country. There will be a big 'demand in the west for hay all the teama building the A. & 1. and the two line of the SaDta Fe in Mexico are Ic be fed, and not enough hay in New Mexico for home consumption. If yon want to atudy the immense variety of the human face in expression you should bend your gate upon the mobile countenance of a deaf and dumb man when he reachea an der the plank walk for a lost nickel and picks op a raw bumble bee by the etem, Speaking of the release of ex-Congrasman Conway from the inune esjlam at Washing ton, the Troy Chief says: "This is right. Kansas is the paradise of lunatic, and Con way should hare a chance. Kansas makes governors, judges and members of the Leg islalure cf ber worst lunstics. Welcome, Conway I" Little Chief of the Northern Cheyennes, and Ben. Clsrk, interpreter, pasted through town lsst Moudsy, on their return from Waahicgton, where the Chief had been in consultation with the Interior Department with reference to the reciofil of bis tribe to the north. Little Chief ssys about 200 will go to the north this tall, and the others as soon a grass comes next spring. There are about 800 in the band, and their removal to the Territory, in the first place, was a piece of treachery on the part of the Hayes ad minismtion for which no excuse can be ofiered. Caldwell Commercial. A captive bear at ir.e Arkansas Hot Springs finds occasional solace in a botlleo( beer proflered by some good-natured person A recent visitor, who had been much amus ed at seeinr bruin draw the cork and drtnk from the bottle with evident satisfaction, de termined to treat as often as the bear desired, taking a glass himself from every bottle which the captive put under his belt. At the end of two hours the man succumbed to nineteen glasses snj was borne away on a ehulttr, while tba bear strolled back and forth at the end of bis chain with a serene and benevolent expression upon his counte- Howard Courani: It is estimated, for the exact figures have not yet been arnv.d at, that the stock interes's of Kansas represent a value exceeding $06,000,000, and it is a t a'e statement to make that a year from to ils j the value will be nearly if not quite, double that amount. The greater part of this is represented by cattle, but when we re member that the latest computation places the number o' sheep ia the state at over 1000 000, it can readily be seen that this branch is by no means an unitujtortant part of the eiock interests. The rapid, rtmarka- ble,and indeed unprecedented growth of the hrep interests in the State ia a matter of great congratulation, and its promise for the luture is still greater. Quite an excitement prevails amoog our people by the shooting cf Little Buck, an Ossce Inditn. by U. H. Deputy Marshal L. Vt. Marks. The facts are as follows: Mirks came upon Little Boca, who is wanted at Fort Smith on a charge of horse stealing, nsir Rarnettsville. Cherokee Nation, and or dered him to surrender, whereupon Little Buck drew a butcher-knife and started to ward Marks, saying at tbe same time that he would die before he would surrender Marks drew hii pistol and fired. Little Buck is a nottd thief and has been on the scout for some time. He has also ssid that he wanted to kill one marshal, then he would be willing to die. Indian Journal. m Colorado parties have contracted for 1,500 Ions of prairie hay and 8,000 tone of wheat in Rlent township Sumner cmntv. They propose to oe it in wintering 43,000 sheep. Cbronoacope. Uncle Joe (Jill, an old colored man in this town, experimented this season in a small way, in cotton raiting. He planted several rows in the garden, and permitted it to grow as best it could without cultivation or atten tion. It has grown well, and is now mature, and ia said to be ss fine and healthy as any rsised in the South. We have no doubt but this crop can be successfully raised here, and would urge the farmers to try a small piece of ground next spring. It is worth the effort, and may prove a profitable experiment Great Bend Tribune. The aheep interests are begining to loom up in this county. Farmers in all parts of the county are fast realizing that wheat and corn are not the only staples that can be profitably handled ia this country.
