NO. 50 TOWN STORY FROM DODGE CITY- in Tao Panittil U Til mil Off ttotV f test on stories describing different Run, . o fnllnwlnor WIS DubllBbed last Sunday. . i B H. MCP. BALDWIN. Should any ono who has visited Dodge City a mow or more of years ago, per chance read this brief description of some of Its leading characteristics, the writer mlgbt be considered a rather careless handler or the truth, but should the erst while visitor return and tarry with us awhile all doubts would be dispelled and truth would once more be proven strat ger than flctlan. There is perhaps no town In this great commonwealth where there has been a greater moral regeneration, a complete transformation from a wild, mostly law less community, to one of the quietest, most orderly and best governed munici palities In the West. The day of the cow puncher and cattle rustler has lorg since passed. "Boot Hill" la only a sad memory where now stand a modern structure, from wnose portals young la dles and gentlemen are now coming arm ed with one of tbe best weapons to fight life's battles, a high school diploma. From the town of shacks and tents we have grown to a well laid out little city Of nearly 4,000, with many beautiful homes surrounded by by attractive lawns and protected from the blistering sun by numerous shade trees. Tbe business por tlon of the city will also show a wonder ful Improvement with Its brick blocks and up-to.date stores and will compare favor ably with any city of a like size in tbe state. Our schools are of a high order and we have six churches to supply tbe spiritual needs of the Inhabitants. A community of thrifty farmere surrounds us, Celug a division point of the Santa Fe, a large proportion of our cltizins are railway employees. We have three grain elevators, one flour mill, a broom factory and a plant for the manufacture of build ing bl"cks, with other Industries con templated. It was one of our ciiaracterlHtlo sum mer days with tbe temperturo hovering near the century mark when I approached one of our oldest inhabitants and ad dressed to hlra the following question: "What distinctive featare does our town possess?" With tbe perspiration exuding from every pore of his benign counte nance, be serenely replied. "Why our delightful climate." 1 was about to turn from him In disgust, but when I thought of tbe delightful evening aod night that would surely follow the afternoon, the scores of beat prostrations lit tbe larg e olties east of tbe Mississippi and the millions who were endeavoring to get few moments of refreshing slumber after surviving the humid beat of the day I was willing to concede that there was more truth than sarcasm In my friend's reply. Tbe cool evenings and nights, no matter bow warm the clays, are certainly distinctive features of onr towns lu Kan- tat especially in tbe eastern half of the state aod make It an especially desirable abldelng place In tbe summer as well as other seasons, But our climate is not our only attrac tion. Our especial pride Is a grove which lu size at least Is umqualedln Kausas and which perhaps is unsurpassed in natural beauty, witb lis wealth of shade from Its thousand or more of elm, boxelder, Cottonwood, maple and other trees. This Is tbe camplngground of tbe Southwestern Kansas .Veterans' Assocla tlon. For tbe pist seven years the re union of the veterans has been tbe event of our town. Wltb Its array of dlstiii gulshed speakers, Its many thousands of visitors and the vitrled amusements lu progress, tbe gatht ring of tbe old soldlei s Is anticipated with the liveliest Interest, for we feel that we we will bold one of the largest assemblies of any of our neigh boring oil ies. So long have we held these reunions that we are are beginning to be lieve that we hare a perpetual lease upon the veterans and their famlles and tbelr friends. One of the desirable feature! of our town Is tbe moral atmosphere which en velopes It. We have no street brawls, no rowdyism, no street mashers, no joints, In fact evil doers are as scarce hs flies in midwinter. Tbemarshall bastbe least to do of any one In tbe town, There Is apparently so little demand for bis ser vices that tbe city council Is thinking ser. lously of abolishing the office. Here we have no graft, no political scandals, no town gossip, but a well governed, luw abiding, charitable and thrifty people. Verily ours mlgbt be considered a model city, the Utopia of the West. Ours Is a very sociable community. The cordiality, hospitality and good cheer extended to the stranger In our midst bless blm that gives and him that receives. The study clubs, musical clubs, art clubs, aesthetic clubs, reading clubs, debating clubs, society clubs and nume ou8 other clubs that could hardly be classified, make life here very agreeable. We neyer did feel dull. Throughout tbe entire year there Is something doing by tbe various clubs and ennui Is an afflic tion tbat Is a stranger to us. We can hardly boast of our old fid dlers, but we have a few members of the old cowboy band left who would not play second fiddle to any one in the State. Our military band has made life very pletsaut Ibis summer wltb Its semi weekly concerts. Its fame has reached our neighbors. Need I say more to convince you Mr. Town Editor tbat ours Is a very desira ble town In which to dwell? Uncle Joe Cannon, who was with us a few days ago Is alleged to have said that this Is tbe garden spot of tbe world Perhaps he Is right. For Sale.
