It will be remembered that a few days ;&o we published the fact that Aug. iberg, 1431 South Tenth street, this city, held one-fifth of ticket 73,040, which drew the capital grise of $150,- 009, in the drawing of The Louisiana State Lottery, which took place at New Orleans, Tuesday’ March 16th; that, through Herman Kountze, president of the First National Bank of Omaha, he had sent the ticket by the United States express ; to the New Orleans National Bank, and through the latter had received a draft on New York for thirty thousand dollars. - His draft was made on the Hanover National Bank and was sent to Kcuntze Bros., New York city, for collection. We were informed yester day at the First National Bank that the sum of thirty thousand dollars was re ceived at that bank on Thursday from New York, and that it now stands to the credit of Mr. Wiberg, whom we hearti ly congratulate on his great good for tune, and the receipt of the money. —— i e There is great rejoicing among the peovle when the price of a great paper is reduced from five to four, from four to three, and from three to two cents, or-from two to one cent, and there is no doubt men who would like the price to go down to one-half cent. Price 25 cents. ————— . @ e Too Many Girls Going West. The low rates of fare to California have started a species of emigration from Chicago which threatens to become a serious matter. In some way or another word has been passed around that there is a great demand for ser vant girls on the coast. Wages are from $2O to $3O a month, according to the reports, and a Chinaman is always kept to do the heavy work and the washing. On the strength of these reports hundreds of young women are leaving good places in Chicago and buying tickets for San Francisco. The giris have also bheard that there are many opportunities to marry rich men on the coast, rich men being abundant and good looking girls scarce. Of course, this adds fuel to the flame and the em igration is reaching serious proportions. One morning last week while she was clearing away the breakfast table the cook employed in a North Side family heard of the great in ducements offered n California She also heard that the raiiway fares were likely to go up at anv minute. By 11 o’clock her trunk was packed, and when the Pacific Express pulled out of the Union Depot at noon she was on board. It is said to be a fact that ser vants’ wages on the coast are fifty per cent. higher than in Chicago. A spider, as shown by an estimate by means of actnally weighing it and then confining in a cage, ate four times its weight for dinner, thirteen times its weight for supper, finishing up with an ounce, and at 8 o’clock p. m. when he was released, ran off in search of food. At this rate a man weighing 160 [pounds would require the whole of a fat steer for breakfast, the dose repeated with the addition of a half dozen well-fattened sheep for dinner and two bullocks, eight sheep and four hogs for supper, and then, as a lunch, before going to his club banquet, he would indulge in about four bar rels of fresh ftish.—ChAristian Union. —— e @ PP ® s The harmful and fatal results attending the use of cough mixtures containing morphia, opium and other poisons, are daily becoming more frequent.
