J»l|« Vliwi ra Ihi Aid 4««stl*a. We Mkke the following extract from a latter from the Hon. George Greene, for merly one of the Judge* of the Supreme Coert of Iowa:— "Platt Smith, Esq.—Pear Sir:—I am '^iMeed'Ib'fcftn by joutfof the 2d in*, that a State convention hat bee*« called to lake into consideration the propriety of ob taining State aid for »uch railroads as may be considered of State importance. I have read with much interest yonr arguments upoa this subject, and consider thera, in the main sound. That section of the con etitntion which forbids the State to loan, or give it* credit to corporations, I consid er a restriction upon legislative action on ly, and is not intended to limit or qualify State indebtedness authorized by Sec. 5, Art. 7. Under this section a single object must be distinctly specified by the law.— That object may be single, and still confer benefits upon, or afTect a plurality of sub jects. The single object of a law may be to benefit or donate a stated amount to the aeveral Agricultural Societies of the State or the single object may be to aid certain schools, or to improve certain navigable streams or that specific object may be to furnish iron or money to aid in building oertain railroads and still all money raised by such a law may be restricted to the spe cific object therein designated. The necessity for immediate action in behalf of the leading railroads of our State must be apparent to'all. Something ot this kind must be done bv our people in order to revive the present lifeless condi tion of our State." It will be seen that Judge Greene's views correspond withjkue of Piatt Smith There is a disflrepaneyw judgment on the subject here referred to. and we are will ing and anxious to get the views of as ma ny of the lights of the country as we can. Dubuque Times. The Next I'ougrni. The Washington Slates contains ike following speculations on the political complexion of the next Congress In the elections which b*ve already taken place for members of Conpress the position of parties stands Democrts 49, Republicans 102. The State* yet to elect are Alabama. Connecticut. California, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississ ippi, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Rhode Island. Tennessee, Texas and Vir ginia, which elect eighty six members. In the present house they stand a* follows: Dem. Rep. Amer. 67 7 12 Add already elccted, 49 102 109 12 Total, 116 "In the States yet to elect the Republi cans may gain two members in Connecti cut-, and the Democrats will, in all proba bility, (rain six members from the South Americans in Kentucky, Tennessee. Geor gia, North Carolina, and Maryland. Such a result will make the next Congress stand: Democrats 120, Republicans 111, South Americans 6, which will gire the Demo crats a majority of three over all and if ihe fourth district in Michigan has gone Democratic, as reported, the Democratic strength in the bouse will be 121, and a majority orer all of jive. All I* b« Honored. It is now said that the President intends to remove from office in Illinois, all those I9*Thani£8G1vinu in Aubima.—The Thanksgiving proclamation of Governor Moor, of Alabama, is a remarkable pro duction. It suggests the propriety, first, of keeping Thursday, November 25, and secondly, of making the day a time of pray er fer the preservation of the nion. The Mebi ile Register thinks tbe .idea a good 4M- and comments on it thus: It will be observed that our worthy Gov enor here developes a new Experiment for preserving the Union. It is the efficacy of prayer. This is an excellent idea. We have tried every other appliance to beat back the swelling tide of Northern a^'gres aiou, and they have all proved unavailing. A* a last resort we are recommended to try the efficacy of prayer. Well, let us try it. If praying won't save the Union, and drive tbe devil out of the Abolitionists, then nothing will. We'll pray, Governor but at the Bame time, remembering the shrewd suggestion of Cromwell, we'll "keep ou* powder dry.'
