Just 'Beginning to Groto 1 IS safe to say there is not a town in the west that Iulr enjoyed for the lant two yearn, anil is tdill enjoying a greater measure of prosperity and a more rapid Kiowth than Albiniueniue, arid yet all the híriis of the times point very distinctly" to the fact that the immediate future has conditions In store for us which will make the good times of the past nee in dull by comparison. For the last fifty years as population pushed westward one town afiflr another has held the record for rapid j?rowlh, ami has been pointed to by the IliiK'T of destiny as the coining great city of Its section of the country t'hicaKo and San Francisco, Minneapolis and (alveston, Omaha and lieriver. Kansas City and Eos Angeles, each In turn, occupied the center of the staff' has been the magnet to draw the attention of the public, offering the greatest tit tractions to homes.-ckers and the most promising investments to capital, and i e ich in its turn has "made good" all that Is promised. Now it Is Alhuiierpic'H turn. It is located in the right place. It is far uotigh away from any other general distributing point. The natural resources of the tountry tributary to it are amply sufficient to support a great city, and they are being developed with a view to finding their market at. this place. The latitude, the longitude and the altitude are all Just right for business, comfort and health, ami the "men behind the guns" are endowed with a spirit of energy, enterprise and pull-togetherness which makes them Just the right men In the right places. Some of us have seen all this for years past, and our paramount aim lias been to let the public see it. AVe Saw K with the eye of faith, but t'.e people now see it with the eye of business, and they are coming, to get the advantage of the ground Moor and anticipate the future. Our lirst job is successfully accomplished; our present duty is to take care oT the strangers as fast as tle-y inirti and that Is already taxing us to our ut most. We have builded better than we knew. Tin town Is growing faster than the most optimistic of us had hoped for, and I is our duty now to "get n 'move on" and provide mine accommodations for ie newcomers. The nioct of them will build homes of th' ir own as soon as they have time to take m the situation, but in the meantime tiny must be provided with temporary libeller, and that is "up to" U". If. in addition to the hundreds of substantial buildings in course of con struction, a hundred I'mid dwelling houses should 'be commenced tomorrow--' bouses that would be neither "shai ks" nor mansions, but would rent for. say 10 to $3ü a month there would be a tenant waiting for every house before it was ready to nut- into. That such conditions already exist Is a fact that .'o o"e will AWate of. and that the pressure Is increasing vory day Is nl to -e,kJ' wn. The i, p!e are comi.ig faster than we are providing the m lo talco tar.' of them, and the InÜux has but only just commenced. E man who has an inte rest In making Albuquenpie a big city should put up house to rent, if it is In his power to do so. We Invited the people to come and if we leave them now to camp on the prairie some of them may o omewhere else. Arid besides, there is no safe investment in the country anywhere that will pay a better rate of interest and that rate will steadily in. re.i:e an the tow n grows. About the growth of the town there is no more doubt than there is nbnnt the sun idilulng tomorrow. It Is possible, in the course of nature, that the ky of New Mexico might be so densely overcast that none of the people could see the fue of the sun for a whole day. but such an occurrence Is so utterly improbable that it is not worth while to consider it. And II Is just as improbable that the growth of Albu'iuepiue Is going to stop now. The vas', foims of money that are now being put into substantial improvements at this place, and the tlil! greater sums that are ready to go into greater enterprises which are now being arranged for. are not being invested to meet, the present tlein amis of Albuquerque, but with a view to what the demands of Albuquerque will lie when it shall have four or live limes its present population. And shrewd business men do not pour out their money by hundreds of thousands In enterprises that are many years ahead of the demand. Solos by thW Second FiddLv. in 9 lililí A R' ÍIWÍU .J u No wonder Tomas needed a cartload of Hew bedding. General Stoessel Is paralyzed. But no one 1 blaming General toessel for that. The grand jury finds that the Ber nalillo county court house has bats In its belfry. Emperor Francis Joseph is said to have made Taft a liberal offer to come over in Hungary and alt on the lid awhile. ft is presumed that ex-sheriff Hub- bell knows more now than he did u while ago concerning th condition ol the county Jail. to add Insult to injury they huns a picture of Perfecto on the wall of Tom's cell and gave him the grand jury's report to read. Lives of sheriffs all remind us, Do not monkey with the court; Meditating In the nlat house is a tiresome kind of sport. The Eittle Governor, (Heading his newspaper in a Quiet and retired Place where he Can Hest.) "And to think that it was ME done all this!" 1 The New York Sun says M. Witte is the most Infernal liar that ever came out of the east. It Is not stated wheth er "the east" includes insurance head quarters In Wall street. It Is alleged !h,t the big fire at Co Ion has reduced that town lo a semi colon. The inhabitants undoubtedly made a dash but a man is an asteris his life making such puns. The police are hunting for the wag who hung a placard. Here lies ( Honest Man" over the witness sthnd when president McCall. of the New York Life, came forward to' testify. í I It appears that all the easy marks do not wear long whiskers and hail from Pumpkin Center. Witness the Well street institution that was buncoed out of a third of a million by a bogus check last week. Deputy Sheriff le functo Newcomer is now tiling a charge of pickpocket ry against Deputy Sheriff de facto lleyn for niching the celebrated jail keys from his pniMs pocket. And thus doJ.li the plot thicken. A Wiehll.'t dispatch says a Sania Fe train stopped near there to allow a woman to catch up and kiss her hus band good bye. This beats the nne that stops to let the passengers pick black berries oft the right of way. The Phoenix Oaznot says fiulson Millets has had the temerity to back up his wild tales about New Mexic with proof. Evidently the (ay.uot ha not road Mr. .Gullet's latest effusion wherein he says In- was "badly stuff ed" and Is "sorry he done It." Edwin T.efevre has broken the news to the mihlie thai a "tinkers dam' is not spelt wllh a final "n" and means the tiny wall of clay which n tinker makes around the spot which he w ish es to snider, ft is a consolation, "How ever, that It sounds just trie same when you say It. HIP1.EY S reply to Miss jjf gives the lady what is eo H f "a ro jst," ami pals her befo Miss Tirhell's nttack on the Santa Fe road commonly railed in newspaper parlance fore the public In a very unpleasant light. The principal grievance complained of by her was that the road had Advii need the weight of crude oil In May, from 6.4 pounds to 7.4 pound: per gallon, while making no change li, the weight of refined oil, nnd thia, according to Miss Tarbell, was "a discrimination in favor of the Standar 1 (Ml Co." Now, oil Is shipped in tanks, holding a given number of gallons, and us freight charges are based solely upon weight the gallons have to be reduced to pounds, and Mr. Itlpby shows that crude oil weighs one pound to the Ballon more than refined oil. lb- states that in the beginning of the oil Indus try in Kansas the only shipments were the rcllned oil. When crude oil began to he hliipped it was billed at the same rate as the refined product, on the lissutnptioft that both Weighed the same. In due time the mistake was discov ered by the railroad's "weighing and inspection bureau." and the rate was cor jeepd accordingly. A a matter of fact, until the correction was made, the iiseruniiMitioi w..s against the .standard nil Co., and not in its favor, lis b.U'd by Mis 'farted!, Mr. fUpley's reply was thoroughly coin lusive and the incident might be Considered US closed but for 'he fact that Mis TarbeH'ii false accusation will probably be read by the thousands of persons who may never see .Mr. Ripley's toiTection, ami. us he justly obs.-rves, will serve to Inllame the public mind ngatnst corporate Interests. THE Salvation Army is sending a number of unemployed liritons to Canada, where they will be put upon tin land nnd glv n a chance to get i.lotég In life. There Is a reasonable assurance that the men selei ted for assistance vlll deserve to do well, because they are not loafers, but merely Ynfnrtunates out of employment, but willing to put their shoulders to the wheel. It Is a fine work the army Is doing and every well disposed person Will. hope that Hooth's most sanguine dreams of helpfulness will be realized.
