The unusual success of the opening year of the Xew Mexico Institute for tho Hllnd at Alamogordo has already atliactt-d much attention among edu cators and I lie first annual report or thut institution covering Ihe year 19116-07, serves to call renewed atten tion to the extraordinary aunes of Ihe InsUtution'a initial year. The re port which has been prepared by 8. H. Oill. the superintendent who Is him aelf blind, la a careful work aettlng forth in great detail the work of the year and tho plans for the future, which indicate that Mr. Oill has n wide knowledge of his diflicul. work antl the executive ability to success fully carry it out. The report ia Illus trated with the photographs of clu.sa rooms ami work shops and shows the Utile blind pupils being taught useful trades which I hey can perform In spite of their afltit tiotis and by which they may lead useful antl Independent lives. (Special Correa por. tiene Morning Jonrnal. Estancia, N. M., Oct. i. The Tor rance county fair la on here in full force with lota of people in attendance and the promise of success financially and from the standpoint of satisfac tory displays. Farmers are in town from every section of the valley. bringing their products for exhibition and some very fine displays have been made. A large crowd attended the opening day yesterday, and today many new face are to be seen in the throngs. Some of the displays are worth the long trip to Estancia to see and will attract a lot of attention at the territorial fair next week, where most of the better displays here will be taken when the fair closes tomor row. Among some of the fine displays ia that by Mrs. O., H. Scott, formerly of Albuquerque, who has cast her lot In the Estancia valley She haa on ex hibition some corn that -can not be beat, and several squashes of mam moth proportions, one of them weigh ing sixty-two pounds. Cabbage, mil let and beana complete her display, which is from a tract of fifty-five acres, all new sod. Thirty acres are In corn, which will produce this year some thirty-five bushels to the a.-re. Sugar beets from the KIser farm are on display, many of them weigh ing more than ten pounds, while the Hlghtower ranch has on display some of the finest potatoes, the result of a planting on June 15. and also some splendid squashes and cantaloupes J. J. Hrown hus a display of pump kins, the prize one of which weig'is seventy-five pounds. Oeorge Hunni, living near Wlllard, is here with a dis play of watermelons, the larxst of which tips the beam at forty-three pounds. Thia exhibit ia a pretty con vincing argument of the results to be had by industrious farming In this valley, for practically everything here has been raised without Irrigation. The display taken through the eastern states would serve to correct many wrong Impressions about "arid" Xew Mexico. For Instance there la the case of the Dusiiii farm near Wlllard. Mr. Oustln. the owner, shucked and meas ured the corn from one acre of hit. cornfield and the result was forty three bushels to the acre. He has from thirty to forty acres that will average that, and -all grown without Irrltrailon. H.' E. Ludwig. a health-seeker, ia here with a display of cornstalks standing nine feet high, with ears twelve and one-half inches long, all grown without Irrigation. His neigh bors say It is merely an evidence that "Providence will take care of the Dutch." At least this Is what appears on the exhibit card. It does not take the county fair to convince the visitor that Torrance county and this great valley are in prosperous condition. There are five or six new business houses here since my last visit four months ago, and others are In prospect. Homeseekers continue to pour Into the valley and while the number Is not so great aa during the summer months, there are plenty of them. Work ia to be resumed aoon on then artealan well. The machinery for a new well haa Just come In. and the backers are confident that artealan water ia a probability of the near fu ture, .'irtesian water would turn this valley Into a paradise. The Estancia Savings bank Is now open and doing a nice business. Its business atone ia convincing evidence of the prosperity of the people, ihe bank has a cardial of $15.(lo0. A. J. Oreen is president. W. J. Hiltson vice president and C. H. Hittaon cashier. The directora are S. A. lioldsmlth. James Walker, Itr. F. B. Romero, for merly of Albuquerque; W. C. Asher, H. J. Xeshitt. Judge Moriarly, of Morlarty, la here for the fair, with his wife and daugh ter, and with him is a large contin gent of the Morlarty neighborhood. In fact, the whole valley Is centered In Estancia fur the fair. The iij'inl of feed which ha been raised lnTfTe valley this year will end forever the shipping of large quanil- tlea of Kansaa feed into this district, j ano a lew more aeasona win see mis valley supplying feed lo the rest of central Xew Mexico. The farmers even thia year will have feed to sell instead of having to tiuy at winter prl. ea. and their will be considerable slock feeding here during the winter. The Albuquerque-Estancia automo bile line will file its articles of Incor poration al once, and the machines for the new line ai msa the mountalna are expected daily. It was hoped they would arrive before the local fair, but slow- freight disappointed the promop ers It Is expected, however, that they I will be In service by the first of next! w eek.
