The Smithsonian institution has jusl
issued the report of Dr. J. W alter Few-
kes on Ihc prehistoric ruins of the Cila'
valley. The report is limited especio My

The report which is illustrated with
five plates, gives an interesting account;
of those ancient ruins of that arid sec-,
lion of our great southwest. The Casal
(Jrande type of buildings is pruclically
found only in the plains bordering the
(lila. Salt and Santa cruz rivers, where,.
w a have cvi-rv reason to suppose, this
speeialized form of structure first
arose and later reached its highest ili -
velopineiit.
Dr. Fewkes says: "Architectural fea
ture of Ihe-e prehistoric buildings of
the Cila plains are well .-hown in the

structions In our southwest.
In concluding bis review of the pre
historic ruins in the Hila valley Dr.
Fewkes 1 ays: "The extent of the ab
original ditches that can be traced for
miles shows that the prehistoric in
habitants had discovered and applied
a more extensive system of irrigation
than any of their contemporaries who
dwell in other sections of what is now
the l'nited States. Mere was d, vclopcd
