ISC fiOIN PLEASES I FRISCO Composer Who Spent Several Months In Albuquerque Prominent In Big Coast Musi cal Event. The Indian music of Charles Wake- field Cadman. the composer who rt jcently spent several months in Albu- iuer,ue, and also made an extenued study of Indian themes In Oklahoma, proved highly pleasing to a large and critical audience in San Francisco re cently. Cadman was prominent on the program incident to the sessions of the Music Teachers' association of California. Preceding Mr. Cadman's number was the first public presenta tion of Herman Perlet's quintet for piano and strings in C minor, wii.i this great composer at the piano, Wil liam Hoffman and (lenuro Saldierne, violin; Julius A. Hauf?. viola, nnd Vllalpando, violoncello. The San Francisco Call, w hich pub lishes a picture of Cadman, in course of an extended half-pnge criticism of the program, has the following; to say about the student of Indian melodies: "The analysis and recital of Indian music by Charles Wakefield Cadman, with vocal illustrations by Mrs. Willis N. Tiffany of Los Angeles, was the first number on the afternoon's pro gram. The value of Indinn music, as Cadman aeoa It, lies not in its analysis and separation, but In Its amalgama tion with harmony. It corresponds to our music emotionally. If we were to differentiate them the Indian musle would be found to be more subjective, while ours Is objective. It is essen tially adapted to express human emo tion clearly In the natural form, un tramiuelcd by civilization. In advo cating the use of Indian music Cad man believes in employing it only when occasion calls for it. He said "It will not dotninato the national school of music when it is consum mated." "During the interpretation or the Indian music Carlos Tmyer presided at the piano, playing his two composi tions." Tlie Blanket Song," and "The Incantation Over a Sleeping Infant."" M. C.
