In provisions the final) range varied from 5c decline, to a rise of 1 5c. Persistent buying on the part of foreigners tended to carry the Wheat market upward from the start, but it was not until the last hour of the ses sion that prices went skyrocketing in good earnest. Estimates after tho close indicated that since yesterday i Europeans had acquired more than 2.500,000 bushels of wheat from the relatively meager supply in the Unit ed States. In this connection reports were current that the P.ritish government forced vessel rates on the Atlantic down from 2 8c. to 10c a bushel, and was bending all energies to lessen the cost otherwise of handling wheat ship ments from this country. Such re ports put shorts and other purchasers Into a turmoil that was but little if any abated when the gong cleared the pit. Smashing of Argentina wheat crop estimates as a result of drought seemed to have much to do with the Increased European demapd, having reached a point today which made the exportable surplus of Argentina seem so incredibly low that the figures were withheld pending verification. The ef fect on the trade, however, wa nev ertheless radically bullish and was rendered more so by news of heavy snpwstorms In Canada, where thresh ing, only half completed, was said to have been brought to a standstill. There also were indications that both Kiench and Italian import needs would be greater than was the case last year. liesides, war news was not of a sort to encourage nope oi an early peace, especially advices Just be fore the close of the day's trading that the Hussians had suffered a severe de feat In Calicia. Corn was lifted by enlarged export demand.
