COMMEBCIAL. Commercial and Moner Matters. TcctaSAT Evzxtxo, Jan. S7. 1&59. UoKir, Exceasoe, Ac.—The day haa been Etormy and exceedingly unpleasant, and trans actions bare been limited to the actual necessi ties of trade. The money market exhibits no new feature, quotations remaining very nearly at yesterday's figures. Exchange may be quo ted ot to customers, the Marine Bank maintaining it at the lower figure, and nearly if not quite ell the others at the higher. Outsid ers are charged 1%, and some of the banks do not care to sell at these figures. Orders from the country are more frequent, and the scarcity seems rather to increase then to diminish. Lo cal ptper, if lirst quality, is taken at 10 percent. Eastern thuty-doy bills ot par to half per cent discount. Gold is held more firmly, but there are few siles. Rates percent premium. street brokers are aoine very little at* " wOmiDDl rates, ranping from I<£2 per cent r- r moQth Comhehcul. Spring iWheat is firm, with but few willing to Bell at the ruling rales. Last evening 9,000 bu old Xo. 2 Sjiring sold at 90c in store, and to-dov a few car loads of No. 2 and Standard were sold at Sy and 90c, and new Rtjected at 70: in store. Tlieee figures' however, were Ireely cl!';red for round lots with! out any movement. The Flour market alto continues stiff, wiih very little Spring Extra on the market- Medi um brands sold today at J!-.'), and choice at t5.25. There was more movement in WinUr brands at 10^6.25. Corn advanced to-daj beirg paid per CO lbs on track, and liaSSc for Ear per 70 lbs on track. Oats quiet, liarlcy in good demand. Seed very scarce. On account of the prospect of & heavy emigra tion to Pike'. Peak in the Spring, quite a spec ulative inquiry is made for choice White Beats at £1.25. The Provision market is tirm, with fales d Light Mess Pork at J15.50 and Heavy at *10.50. Cut Sleats in active demand. Sales to-day were made at l'?c for Shoulders, and for Hams packed in sugar hhds, for delivery at Milwau kee in February. No Lard offering. We quote it at 11c, although holders will not tell at that figure. The market for Dressed Hogs is quiet with sales to-day at *000.40 lor Heavy Hogs. At Milwaukee yesterday, >*o. ii Spring Wheat sold at $1.03; So. lot sl.os<tfl.CG ; and Extra Club ot sl.lo<gl.lS. At St. Louis on the "3th, Uorn sold ot C'sc j Whicky was held lirmatSOc; Mess Pork, {is' and M. O. $17.-5; Lard cold ot n}i<&U% in bbls, ondl2>£ in kegs; Prime Ueacs, fI.CO. At Detroit on the SGth, Corn Bold otTOc; Spring Extra Fluur ot ?5.24 ; and Clover Seed at $5.25. The Cincinnati Gaziltt of yesterday sayß: There has been a continued actire demand principally speculative, for Hour, ond the mar ket closed firm yesterday, ut *5.10<g5.20 for superfine, with un upward tendency. Wheat odvmced during the week Lc on the better grades, and on the lower qualities. Corn is Me&dv at 6uj lor round lots. In the provifion market sellers hare obtained further important advantages, a general ad vance having been established during the week in the value of every article, and at the close buyers were more anxious to operate ot the ad vauce figures than sellers. Mondug and Tester day there were orders from the South, consid erable iu amount, which strengthened the trade very materially. A large proportion of the orders for liiicon were from Charleston, S. C Ttie stocks in most of the Southern Seaboard cities are very light. Thia is also the case in lidltinjore, aud the advancing tendency exhib ted in tiie leuding markets ot the countrr with in the last two weeks, have had tbe effect to stimulate purchasers from the consuming die tncts. IFrcm the C|-.ciniiftl Price Correct, Jan. So 1 According to our usual custom, wu have, dur ing the past week, obtained a report from each ot the pork packing establishments; of the num ber ot hogs packed, and the average weight, to gether with the compilative yi?ld of lard. We have as the trade know*, published during the se-son, tbe receipis of hogs from week to week as near as we could obtuiu them. Our reports of receipts thus obtained, have for several years post corresponded pretty well with the packers' returns, but the present season there is a mark ed difierence. This may be owing to tbe fact that bogs this season, being smaller than usual a larger number than the cnstom&rr estimate has been put in each railway car, or a portion of the receipts may have been suppressed by owners lor obvious purposes. Let the cause ol the discrepancy be what it may, however the facts are now before us in the ahape of the re turns from each house, aca it is with them we hove to deal. The whole number of bouses en gaged this neason was forty five, and tho whole number ot bogs packed, ns reported by Ihem if pSL.6-Jb Our last report of receipts was mudt lw ?. *7, in w^icll we E av e total receipts asou u Since theu about C,OOO have been received, but they may be called the ordinary receipts. The figures compare as follows: dumber o'Hugj reported bv packers #2C " received U'fference The following table shows the number of hogs packed m this city each year, the lost twentv neven years: I-;XHW IN- <;O!ioj } "f j !• -M*> I*j> 23ifiOj -Jil Jw-" j !«'• Sjo.U.o -»<=.—« Tuere can be no doubt that the abolition of the custom of pßying«remiums for slaughter ing kept away froOmbis city 50,000 hogs, which would otherwise come here. The average prices of hops in this market the lMt few years, stand as follows: 'j-j?* 1«35>-C Js'wv asii-y Thus it will be seen that toe average price this season baa been the highest tor tiv. yiara; and not only this, for.by relerring to our rec ords we find that ii is the highest paid in this market since IfICS. And this has been tbe case not only here, but at all th© leading markets in the West.
