speculations, and will live as long as their
services are required in that directaou ; aud
then, if not bought out to sustain some other
enterprise, will cease to appear. Most of
them however are permanently established,
and pa«a from one interest to another, sus
taioiug in turn the diQjrcut enterprises of its
owner or owners. Their subscribers, it is
hardly necessary to say, arc found exclusive
ly in the ranks' of shareholders. It will be
remarked mat 2£e?srs.Mires aud Millaud each
own an industrial paper, il. Mires owns as
well, the Constitutional, Government paper,
and M. Millaud tbe Presse, Republican. But
wl tie M. Mires refuses absolutely to puff his
stock-jobbing op rations in the colums of the
ConslUutionel, Millaud, on the other hand
has taken an opposite course, aud the result
has been seen above ; tbe circulation of the
Presse has lalleu from 40,000 to 21,000, the
Constltutiounc;l has augmented from fifteen
to twenty-six thousand. Tbe Triends of the
Government have not failed to cite tbese cir
cumstances as an evidence of the'decline of
republicanism in the Capital, and the increase
of fcjrmpatby with the Government j but if
there were no other evidences, tho steadiness
with which the Steele holds on to Its thirty
si) circulation, with the same edi
tors, the same politics, the same general char
acter of the paper, would be sufficient to
prove that the change is not a political one
in the sentimeuts of the people, but simply a
change lu tbe character of the two journals

Singular caie of Embezzlement by a
Boston Clerk.
The Supreme Court at Dedham, Massachu
setts, was occupied on Thursday, in the triAl
of a curious case. An action by Henry N.
Hooper A Co. against Charles Wyman, a for
mer clerk of the concern, for an alleged em
bczilement of & large pum in tbo year 1847.
From the testimony of Mr. Hooper &nd big
partner, Mr. Richardson, ii appeared that the
delendant bad been their confidential. clerk
and book keeper, in whom they had the most
entir« confluence, for twenty years, and this
continued up to the time be left, inlßsG. Af
ter be left they were induced to make a
thorough examination of the books fro* 1840,
tbey discovered a deficiency In 1847 or
1648, wliiuh U&3 Veen carefully concealed and
carried alonj on the book* from that time.
They eent for the defendant and demanded an

took the money, and told them they might be

ed restitution, but declined to sign ony paper

brought, and certain real estate k of the defen
dant in Roxbury attached.
