An allcnatiofl’of the affections of the North and South exists, attrib utable to thengitatiou of the slaveiy question at the North which agitation has been materially iutensilied by the zealous efforts of a clan' of political teachers belonging to the ministers. Equity and common honesty require that they shall have fall and equal rights in all the territories belonging to the General Government, The future condi tion of the territories, so far as the extension of slavery’ is concerned, will ultimately be de termined by the -natural laws of jlimalc, soil and productions. Any question that can now be made upon it must be more an abstraction than .a Jiving, yital -principles The immediate cause of the fearful political commotion, which has produced a panic in oil commercial relations, is the result late contest for President. The South regarding the election of a Northern sectional candidate as the se quence. of anti-slavery agitation,-and os the solemn verdict of the people of the tree States against the South and her institutions, and the instinct, of self-preservation has produced that character of action at the South which threatens to destroy onr Government. The-.Southern mind has become impressed with-the belief that there is no longed any safety to them or their property in a Union with the non-siaveholding States. That belief rests not upon any one act of the prevailin'*- party, bat in the chain of events that connect together the history of anti-slavery agitation; There can only be permanent peace between the sections when we of tho free States are ready to stop the discussion of the abstract question of morals connected with this sub ject, and look upon it only as a political qncs t*. on - -What is most needed is a restoration of kindly feeling, and then we may hope that an honest and laithful discharge of aU onr Con stitutional obligations towanla each other will result in healing the present breach. This position, if maintained although it may not affect the action of the extreme Southern States, may do much to bring about a convention of the bor der States for consultation, and their conserv ative action might induce the extremists of tho North and South to pfihse and teflect upon the consequences which must necessarily re sult from their fanatical course.
