Editors Chicago Tribune: Much curiosity being felt to learn all that may be known respecting the meteor of the 11th inst I herewith give you the result of my calculation, estimated from the accounts given by observers in different localities. It is described by Dr. Winne, who saw it from a point about eight miles north of Somonauk, DeKalb Co., Ills., as pinking Us appearance In the Northwest, moving eastward with great velocity, In a right lint a 'little inclined downward—disappearing in the northeast and dcnly, being apparently of the size of a man’s head, luminous like a ball of molteu Iron, and giviug off, just-before it disappeared, coveral little globular massed 'which followed on and .disappeared with the parent meteor. The ele* raaiou of the mctoor aa aeon by Dr. W. wm about forty-five degrees. From the letter of R.E. Moore of Geneva, Kane Co., the elevation as seen there was about sixty degree*. About five minutes af ter its disappearance, Dr. W. was starled by a loud report as of a cannon fired off near by. As seen by J. H. Cooper at Burlington, Ra cine county, Wia., it appeared , first in the northwest, about thirty degrees above the ho rizon, passed about fifteen degrees, south of the senith, and disappeared when about fifteen degrees above the horizon in the southeast, exploding just previous to its disappearance —projecting forward its luminous balls. After itr. Cooper saw the explosion he rode about half a mile, when he heard the report like the sound of a cannon at a distance—which was so heavy as to jar houses, and in some instan ces to cause dishes to rattle on the shelves. The body of the meteor was of a brilliant white color, and appeared about as large as the full moon when shining. PRUS3INC, From these observations, the meteor must have passed vertically over the northern part o' McHenry county and central parts of Lake county, was about fifty miles high when over McHenry county, but dcsccndlngas it passed southwesterly, and must havo exploded soon after reaching the atmosphere. The time be tween the explosion and the report, had It been accurately reported by Mr. Cooper, or Dr. Winns, would give the distance from cither of them; supposing it to have been five minutes, calculating from the known velocity of sound through the air, the explosion took place when over the southeast part of Lake county, IU,, or over Loke Michigan near these. ’Respecting the size of the meteor, we can a!so make an approximate calculation. Al lowing it to havo appeared of the size of the moon—that Is, to measure an angle of one and a half degrees as the distances of our ob servers, it was about two miles in diameter. One more inference. This body did not shine by reflected light like the moon, for being seen bet ween two and three o’clock In the morning, was in the earth’s shadows—lt was sclf-lumi noub—giving off its own light like the sun, I am glad to see by a correspondent of your pi per that a member of the Chicago Academy of Sciences Is collecting facts and preparing a paper respecting this meteor. A comparison of more extended observations will give the elements which I have calculated xnore accu- ®tusses. ©gsttrs. sahuew. rately—and may give a probable solution to tbo question, as to the nature of the meteor itself—•whether an aerolite, If so, •whether the fragments fell into the lake or farther east ward. Was nothing seen or heard of it east of Lake Michigan ? ■ ' E. A Correction* DATExronT, lowa, January 27,1881. Editors Chicago Tribune: Tour dispatch from Springfield, Bis., last week, announced that the delegation from Philadelphia presented Mr. Lincoln with strong anti-compromise resolutions. Such was not the fact. The delegation sent from Philadelphia bad not that subject in charge, and no allusion was made to it in sny manner. Presuming you are desirous of circulating realities only, I feel it my duty, (as the other members of the Committee have returned) to make I Via correction. Yours, very resp’y, CILLBLBS AD-i-MS, - of Philo. A Frencli and EosrlUhJxoteetorato to be l£stabli*l&ed over mexieo. WxsmsCxojT, Jan. 23. I°Cl. Foots have just conic to light which show most conclusively that the English and French governments, in utter contempt for the great Monroe doctrine, are about to establish a pro tectorate over Mexico, and probablv taking ad vantage of our weakness at this time will se cure a permanent footing in the Central Amer ican Slates. It will be remembered with what just pride •very American beheld the respect which Eu- I ropian nations gave to it from the very an- i noancement of the doctrine of Mr. Monroe, I that no European nation should control or regulate the political affairs of North America, except In their existing possessions. Such was the influence of the.powor of our Union that the mere announcement of this doctrine from time to time was sufficient in the management of the ■itToit-K of North America to deter any European nation from. any serious effort to gala any such influence or looting. Although Mexico owes the subjects of Great Britain about sixty millions of dollars, and also, a largo amount to the people ofTranee, which Mexico has refused to pay in the face of her agreement to do so, still such has been the potency of the Monroe doctrine that these nations have not to this time {done what they could easily have done, and would have done, uo doubt, but for this great American interdict. But now, since the Union is dis rupted. the practice of the doctrine has fidlen to the ground, and It Is pretty certain that France and England, one or both together. In tend establishing a Protectorate over Mexico, for the ostensible purpose of collecting from that government the large Indebtedness to them and thdr people. The h'story of British and French aggrandisement In other portions of the globe leaves bnt little doubt what will be the fate of Mexico under the Protectorate entente cvrdiale of these Powers. Flushed with their victories In China, Mer. ico would be an easy conquest for umphant armies under the leadership of Elgin andGros. A . Divided as our great Union must be, with our internal quarrels, and by the formation of two confederacies, we can only look on with sbamefaccdncsa at this outrage upon the doc trine which had become the law of nations by our utterance and which had exempted North America from the utter perfidy and Infidelity of European diplomacy and aggression. Th« Suicide ofJJemr McAlpln of Port Huron.' [From the Detroit Advertiser.] We have by the Sarnia Observer the partial- j Urs of the death by suicide, at Port Huron on Wednesday, of Hr. Harvey McAlpin. well known to many of our citizens os the former law partner of Mr. Wm. T. Mitchell, of Port Huron. He . called at the Postofflee lu the morning, and got two letters, oae of which he opened, and after reading a few lines of its contents thrust both into Mb vest pocket, and hurried homeward. On his way be called at Mr. Uaslett'a, and asked that gen tlcman if he bad a pistol, as he wanted to shoot a cat that was haunting his premUes, and which was very troublesome. Mr. Hns lett stated that he had not the instrument re quired ; and this led to a call at Mrs. Travers where a similar story was ; told; and the latter"having the desired weapon, loaded_lt with dugs or ball, at deceased’s request. He then proceeded home, embraced his children, retired to his room, and discharged the con tents of the pistol Into his chest, the shot tak ing effect a little below the heart. He lived about an hour after committing'the faM act, and was able to converse aboulhalf that peri od.
