©jjkajjo Crilmnt. MONDAY, MARCH U, 1881, Monetary. BATEUDAY EVENING, Ttfyvth, 9,itGli Financially, this has been decidedly a dull day. M*hs banks get scarcely any reliable business p*por Tor discount, for the very good reason that there is noa.e making, and with them the day h»» run its round in securing deposits, paying checks, and retailing very mesgre amounts of exchange. De posits arc stcadily accumulating waiting for a de cline in exchange. The demand continues very light and the nominal buying price has declined to day to 6 per cent, premium. We doubt whether round lots could have commandedabovefiX. The selling rate is still 7 per cent, premium, but from the tone of the market, we presume best customers obtained concessions of X on round lots. - The market all round was dull and heavy. There does not seem to be any demand for gold. It is well there is not, for the country daring the past winter has been completely drained of coin to make exchange. Nominal buying price 6; selling 7 per cent. The Season, Ac.—lt has been colder for the most part of the last week, and the'prospect - for an early opening is not so good. All things con sidered. the general business of the. city shows a Mr degree of activity. The remark continues to be repeated almost interminably that Chicago is |he most active city in the Union, New York ex cepted. As an evidence of the substantial charac ter of that business, we hear to-day of an eastern capitalist who has been loahing money in this city since 1852, and now has a million of dollars invest ed hero on bond and mortgage, say that not a man in Chicago owed him a dollar for interest. All en gagements are punctually met. Avast amount of obligations of all kinds have been wiped out with in the last few years, and the day is not distant when the people of Chicago will have their own millions to Invest Instead of borrowing of eastern capitalists. Our readers bave not forgotten that our fellow citizen, Walter L. Newberry, Esq., was one of the Adders for $40,000 of the late govern ment loan. But so long as Chicago and the coun try west of her is improving so rapidly, meet of our capitalists will find more profitable employment for their foods than investing in Government or State securities. St. Louis.—The Democrat of yesterday save The demand for cxchange continuee small, with the selling rate steady at 6 prem. on the East for bankable funds, and CX to 6 for currency. On New Orleans there ia scarcely any call, and 43£ to 5 is the nominal range for bankable, and X to 1 per cent, higher for currency. The Building & Savings Association takes Dlmois and Wisconsin currency on deposit at 2* per cent, discount below bankable funds, but it is rather accumulating at this rate. No more discount ia charged on the new batch of Illinois discreditedjuoncy than this. On the other, 20 per cent, discount is charged by the brokers who deal in it. There are not so many ‘ doing business, and caution in giving credit Is ex treme; but where there is no fear, goods arc pressed on the buyer, even to the giving of extra credit, if necessary. The large jobbers who sell at a four months credit arc enabled to bny at twice (or more) that length of credit, so that if only they iaspiro-confidencelthey can transact business to a large multiple of their capital. Like tne foreign exchange houses,- who sell their sixty-day bills on their own branch houses in Europe, receiving cash for the same, and paying only at the end of sixty days, they can transact a large business without any actual advance. The stock of printing cloths on hand in the Prov idence market is said to be abont 700,000 pieces. The production is not far from 70,000 pieces per week.. The present demand is so small that prices are very heavy and stock Is accumulating. Some large sales have recently been made to speculators at low figures. The concession within a few months has been fully one cent per yard. These facts will indace some manufacturers, it is be lieved, to turn their attention toother goods. The importations are very light,- with a certain prospect of becoming lighter during the existence of the new tariff. -It-is only the very choicest and most costly goods that will come forward from Eu rope under the new tariff, unless there should be a fall in the price of the raw material to make up for the increase of duty on the fabric. It would seem also, that the Government owes the contractors upwards of $500,000, which is equivalent to the cash value! of the Indian Trust bonds, of the abstraction of which.
