and cuitltnjsu) with numbers
urlvobforau iuttauta paltry Jew of Uie en
emy, with a pittance of a loss which bespeaks
the iitth ness ot the transaction.
This move of Hancock’s, based on informa
tion that, the enemy had abandoned their
minor defenses opposed to our to con
centrate tbeir forces on oar left,'was gotten
tip ul 4}4 p. to., expressly to relieve from
pressure the severe fight of the Si corps,
enacted by Hooker from 7 a, m. until
my division, at near o p. in., entered un
der fire, atd took the place of his exhausted
remnants, demoralzed by fatigue, abandon
ment and want of cartridges. The fire, that
lasted from about 4 y iy lor come twenty min
utes, and which then ceased, was most dis
tincily wllhoutresults, f»»rU wasnot followed
up by any advance; and left me. used to the
fields of battle in Europe, as in Mexico, with
the full belief that an attempicd succor had
been given up, and that I must alone look to
myself for my own means of success. For I
knew well that, besides the repeated messen
gers that Jhad been detatched to the right, by
(len?. Hooker and Ueintzrltmn, that all there
must be aware of our severe fight, from oar
cannon and musketry, which still rolled with
the lull tide of battle. This fire, tanta
mount to that of a ball brigade, which I al-
Indeto, from about 4# to 5 p. m., was the
only one that took place wrhia three mUes of
my portion alter my arrival, at 2% p. ul—
for I was ever constantly far in advance on
ihe plain, in the midst cf the heavy abb.uis.
Yet Gen. McClellan Taunts the one, and se
miibcs to ignore the other. The engagement
where a similar lose in the army of the Allies
constlluUd the great battle of the Ahaa, aa
engagement where my few (live) weak regi
ments Hilfcrcd more (some 450 kilted and
wounded) than the 12.000 men of a French di
vision, when, in ISsl), it won for its general a
world-wide fame as the victor of Montebello.
But when Gen. McClellan passes over, as it
in ignorance, aa engagement of gueh great
proiwtions, it proves, beyond the blackness
ol tLc deed, which breaks down by Its laiijui
tous iirjoetice the spirits of his entire soldiery
that it has been the result of a malignant de
sign ol covering up from the ecraiiay of the
American public, a weakness of his own, a
llaw in bis generalship which he well knows
if once made patent to our people, would
bring him down from his accidental super! >r
ity lower than the world ever dreamed of,
when exercising retribution towards McDow
ell for the disasters at Bull Run.
This action of Gen, McClellan his but one
pat el id In history, his incarcerating Slone,
one of the ablest men of the army, on the plea
that it was done ou the pressure of the aboli
tionists, when it in realit-v was to d-unn. past
being listened to, one who, be knew, if ques
tioned bv a military committee, would not
avoid bunging to light the Incapacity, (and
subsequent contrivances to smother i%) which
had exposed Col. Baker, and then left him,
helpless, doomed, and uusupoorted, at the
battle of Ball's Blufi.
There is a secret in Ibis matter, and al
though patriotism, on the eve of an exoected
action, may prevent me from publishing to
theworid the weakness of the man to whom
are confided onr Union destinies, it does not
preclude me from vindicating f r myself and
my command a recognition of our service and
exposure (no ofilcer has ever exposed himself
as I did, lor the crisis demanded it,) and un
burden myself to friends.
As Stone has been mililarilv killed under a
false pretense, so the secret of McClellan’s
sending an r.flu-lal bulletin on the CUi ins*-,
after entering ‘Williamsburg, in which be
ignores all tut Hancock, and is perfectlv
slirnt as to us, and our battle of s srious war
(although perfectly instructed by Col Swoit
zer, his A. D. C., whom bo bad sent on the
night of the s<b to me and Helmzc’m'm lor la
fonuatiun) is this that he might obtain for
Gen. Hancock an important character ia the
crisis of the stb, the first prestige of its capa
bility tor fighting, (which invariably petty
disasters ana long inaction bad induced many
to mistrust), with which, with the eager
ness of the whole North, it was ready
to greet the llret victor lu the army- of
the 'Potomac. And thus kill the military
success before the country, of the real per
sons so entitled, from the fact of the public
being satiated by the first news, more serious
than this, sot only taking from those who
merit the high sentiment or first prestige, but
more particularly divert the mindsof the coun
try, that the culpable fact was, that he, Mc-
Clellan, had allowed Hooker’s single division
to fight unsupported from morning until my
arrival, near b p. m., and from the fact that
his <c communications,” from this being the
direct aid nearest road from 'ViUiamsonrg to
Ymklown, were thus put in jsopirdy; and
that bad a panic or even a detent resulted
here,-ail bis army, confusedly huddled to
gether, with an impassable, obstructed single
cefile in his rear, where trains and artillery
pieces were helplessly jammed together and
stalled, most have been victims worse than at
Bull Run. The cose would'have been irre
trievable.
Id vain would he plead that he disgraced
Sumner by sending him back to Yorktown,
from dissatisfaction at his. not having extri
cated Hancock after his pseudo victory, and
for sending away to the rear for me, 7 the lasi
troops in the far defiles, to snpport Hooker,
over pressed in the far front For it wis not
fur Gen. Sumner, the commander of a defined
command, to .Substitute himself fjr McClel
lan, the chief. . In vain would ,he qpleal that
Helctzelman should have prorad. a gestos,
and Improvised some stroke of strategy, for
the worthy old general has never pretended
but to do his duty in his sphere, and the gon
eral-in-chlef is the head of all to famish plans,
and to expressly blrud into a whole the energy
of all, which was impossible, as he was not
totre.
In vain will he Impute to General Hooker
the committing fiimielf to a general fight, In*
volvii'g the whole arm. v.fien a tew redtaeute
wou'd have eniliced to hold bis own tiatU the
designs of the chief were, made known; for
U that chief is miles in the rear when his army
is in lull career, there are very few generals,
however superior their t Jen's (and of such Is
General Hooker), who, under the long kno va
duplicity, and favorUl-m, and despotism of
Gen. Mi Olellan, would have ventured to risk
Ms ccsiirg opprobrium on them tor hesita
tion, or do any more than thebest they could,
and rely on him tor justice.
Such Is the secret o» tail incomprehensible
mystery, and it is wirh.ii tha cr»a*pre ! Jcu-ion
of the first citizen’* mind that will spread be
fore him the map of Virginia.
Buiii one point in ?his malignity, worked
with a monopolized telegraph and a trammel
h-d presr, has created with me more indigna
tion liiim another, it sadly i» that the fate of
my two more gr.Uact aids, and very dear
friends, Captain Wilson, assistant adjutant
general, and Lieutenant Barnard, have been
purposely kept from the honors due to their
galiumry; the tame as was the case when my
skirmish at Songster’s Station produced The
enemy’s hurritrO retreat from Manassas, I was
debarred, by every underhand icflacncc from
having published to the world the heroic end
of that most noble martyr to the first cavalry
success, Lieut. Hidden. Ter, this ia a repe
tition of those times; for then, as now, I was
the first general officer whose reports had
been excluded from the press. Gen. McClel
lan, from tte early commencement of hia
career, seems to have tiugled me oat (the
thirteenth on the list of 212 orlcadiera, nearly
the senior division general on the list,) to be
the marked victim of his Indirect Injustice.
However, In this matter I am not acting,
however outraged, from per.-.onal motives, but
to unveil to the country, when opportuni y
shall permit, the weakness and unreliability
of the general in command.
I tnclcte to you my report of the battle of
tte sth. Very truly j our?.
