Myers, the Cairo correspondent of the Asso ciated Press, thus describes the recent run ning of the rebel batteries at Vicksburg by cix transports: In the evening when .all was ready, the steamers came alongside the Von Phul, on which Gen. Grant had his headquarters, and received their final instructions. On board the Von Phul were the principal officers ol theaniiy.Gov. Yates, ex-Gov. Wood, and other notables, to the number of 300 or 400. At 8 o'clock the leave-takings were said, the hearty, “ God bless you” was uttered, the of ficers and crews were 4 ‘ all aboard,” and iu a few minutes we were dropping down with the current towards the rendezvous near Young’s Point. It was a beautiful starlight night, and the moon was almost through the first quarter, too light, it seemed, for the cautious work in hand. Arriving at the rendezvous at a little before 10, the boats were allowed to work their paddles just enough to hold them, against the current, and we were left to await the going down of the moon. There were many epceulat ions and guesses as to the suc cess of the enterprise. Could these frail crafts run that awful ganntlett, six miles long, of iron-hail, and escape with a single life on board ? That was the question. At eleven the moon went down, the lights were all extinguished, and one after another the boats dropped away from eight. The plan was for the Tigress to go ahead, with one of the boats following two Hundred yards in her rear. Therein twenty minutes, two more to start, with about '-he same distance be tween them, and finally, the last two, in the same relation. The writer of this was on board the Von Phul. Soou after the boats had disappeared fr*m eight, all eyes were turned In the direction of the upper rebel batteries, which were acmes the point from us, anxious to catch the first fis!>h or hear the Ilrst report. We had not long to wait. At Ilf t*en minutes before twelve a glimmer of light like distant sheet-lightning daited up from beyond the woods, and in twenty-five strokes of the pulse, the deep, heavy sound came booming up over the water, waking the echoes from the distant windings and turnings of the river. It was followed in rapid succession by some half dozen others, and there could be no mistaking; what it meant. The Tigress was discovered and already she hud commenced her race for life. The prow of the Von Phul was Immediately turned down stream, and we were fast nearlog the point that would give us a Tiew of the up per batteries. Louder, thicker, faster, came the Hashes, and soon a ruddy Hush of light be gan to overspread the sky, and was reflected back on forest and river. The rebels had al ready lighted their bonfires, and they were momentarily increasing in size. By the time we had reached the point, it was light enough on the hurricane deck to read coarse print. We could sec the red light leap from the months of the cannon, and the concussion caused the shutters to chatter. Sometimes a volley of ten or a dozen shots would be fired in such quick succession that they could scarcely be distinguished. Then for a few moments there would ben perfect hush. Pres ently a battery a little further down would open, and we could trace the progress ot each pair of boats as they passed round the bend, till they reached the lower mouth of the ca nal, by these discharges. It was ccnt sight and glorious music, which to be fairly appreciated must be seen and heard. We had often seen and heard the quotation, “the pomp and circumstance of glorious war ; n but the glorious part of it we never appreciated till last Wednesday night. The cannonading was kept up for three hours, and more than six hundred shots were tired. The agony was, no doubt, prolonged by several coal barges, which were turned loose to float by after all the boats had start ed. Early in the morning couriers arrived, bringing ns the results. One or two very Large buildings must have been burned after all the boats had passed, the llamcs from our point of observation being plainly visible. The truth is, the string of boats seemed rath er long, and it was vciy difficult to tell hovr many more were coming, and the rebels were dcteiminedto lose nothing for the wont of eneigy, Gen. Sherman had taken eight yawls, and started from the month of the canal, was out in the river, ready to pick up sufferers in case of disaster, hut happily his services were not needed. All< gethcr, this must be regarded as a splendid achievement. We have now nine gunboats, two rams and seven transports, be sides many llntboalsand barges, below Vicks burg, and that they are very soon to be used to good advantage, wc have every reason to believe. The general condition of tlic army, so tar as health is concerned, is first rate. This state* incut i= made after careful inquiry among the boys, and after visiting tbe hospitals and looking sharply ■with our own eyes. A hope ful spirit pervades the -whole army, and the determination to take Vicksburg is stronger than ever before. ■“ Letter From Hon. Kerepfly Johnson. In response to an invitation to attend the Great Union League meeting in Baltimore last week, Hon. Keverdy Johnson wrote an excellent letter to the Committee, from which we take the closing part: * * * * So firm and determined is tbe patriotic sentiment of our people, that treason cannot even be spoken within their bearing, much less attempted with Impunity. True, m its fullest measure, to the loyalty which hinds them to tho Government, and re* solved to leave nothing undone to maintain it in all its integrity, and preserve the Union which our fathers, by instrumentality, formed and enjoined on us to preserve as vitally neces sary to our happiness and prosperity, they will never cease to war against rebels in arms, until treason is crushed, and the Stars and Stripes wave unchallenged throughout tho whole land, the proud emblem of our power and the evidence of onr renewed progress in a caieer of glory* which, os in the past, will excite the wonder and admiration of the world. To attain this end, as things now are, (however it may have been in the origin of the rebellion,) there are no other means left than force. The sole ministers of peace at present are onr gallant officers, soldiers and sailors. Let these be used as they may be, and the end will soon be accomplished; and let ns, in pressini on the foe, not halt to criticise the conducrofthe Government. Let ns, on the contrary, give it a hearty, zealous support, whilst the peril is upon us, reserving fora period of restored peace whatever of censure wc may have to pass on tho conduct of the men who arc administering it. That they feel as we feel in one particular, no one can justly question. They desire to put the revolt down, and with that end will exert all the means entrusted to them. They deserve, therefore, the confidence and en couragement of all loyal men. Let them have it. Let ns rally around them, applaud them in success, support them in adversity. Let tlicm eee, that happen what may, the heart of loyalty will beat strong and true to doty. That to it no craven fear belongs, no despon dency can come. Let ns tell them that in oar national vocabulary there Is no each word as fall. That attacks, where frustrated, must bo renewed, and renewed again and again, till success Is achieved. Let them be assured that the public heart is as impervious to fear as our monitors are to the shot of the foe, and that these must be used till treason is extermina ted in its very birth-place. Cliis course pur sued, the crisis will soon terminate—blood cease to flow, armed men resume their peace ful occupations, brothers be again united, the authority of the Government re established, and constitutional liberty, so happily exhibi ted in our Institutions, be place on a founda tion against which the machinations of treas onable ambition, and the artifices of foreign and envious rivals, will in the future, plot In vain. ‘With much regard, your obd’iserv’t, Revebdt Johnson. LATE SOLTHEBN NEWS. Wo compile the following items of South ern news from various rebel sources; THE IROK-CLAD'S ENEMY. The Richmond Dispatch of tho 23d says: Tho Brooks hall, which tho Yankees hayo falsely attributed to English manufacture, has riddled the boasted monsters like sieves, and the lesson will not bo lost cither upon them or Europe. the southern flag. Buckner to go and capture a boat at the entrance of Pass a I’Outre. They left Fort Gaines In a vawi, and proceedcd*on their enterprise. On Sunday night they found the tow-boat Whlt temore tied at the mouth of the Pass. The hatches were attended to, and the balance of the party proceeded to arrest the crew, who were calmly and unsuspectingly sleeping. In twenty mlnntes from the time they boarded the boat, they had steam up, and proceeded down the Pass. The Whlttemoro (now the Fox) is a splendid tug-boat, with powerful machinery and sound, and la altogether a su perb prize. yORIT THOUSAND YANKEES. A Chattanooga telegram of the 2lst says: Twenty-fourtmn&portshave landed at East port, eight miles from luka, with 40,000 Yankees, chiefly cavalry. There is no imme diate prospect of a battle. IMPORTANT CAPTURE. A letter from Brownsville, published in the San Antonio (Tex-ts) Herald says: “A Yan kee ship was wrecked on our side of the Rio Grande a day or two since. We got 1,500 bar rels of flour, 1,500 racks of corn, a lot of shoes, bats, etc. We look twelve Yankee prisoners, who were taken to Brownsville. That will help the troops here, especially the 3d regi ment. RAISING FUNDS. In the rebel Senate on the 23d, Mr. Barn well, from the Committee report ed a bill supplemental to tho act for the far ther Issue of treasury notes, and funding the same. It provides for tho issue of $300,000,- 000, in bonds of not less than SSOO, payable twenty years from dale, and bearing interest at the rate of six per cent, per annnm, pay able in treasury notes, or in cotton, at not less than 6d sterling per lb., to be delivered at such ports of the Confederate States as the Secretary of the Treasury may designate, but providing that said interest may he paid In specie, etc. Gov. Letcher is a candidate for Congress in the Augusta district, and Judge T. S. Ghol son in the Petersburg district. The Hon. Pierre Soule is now in Havana, most anxious to return to the Confederacy, and to take part in our national struggle. CROPS. We learn from various persons, that crops thus far look promising. The winter wheat, what there Is of it, gives fair promise, and the spi ing wheat is coining forward, and has an even and healthy look. The ground this spring has been in unusually good order for work, and the farmers arc beforehand with their labor. The ground for corn planting is mostlyprcpared, ard a good many have begun planting. The prospect for fruit is unusually :ood. Apples, pearand cherry trees arc teem ing with blossoms, and there Is a due promise for peaches; and unless a late frost comes to destroy the fruit, there will be a great abun dance of all kinds. —Bloomington Pantograph. Wheat. —Late sown winter wheat, in many localities in onr county, looks badly. The freezing and thawing weather of early spring operated most unfavorably, throwing out and freezing the roots of the germ so effectually as to deprive them of vitality. This is the case with many acres in the townships of Wright. Tallmadge and other eastern town ships of the county. Early sown wheat looks better. Our farmers, however, are very busy so wing spiiuc wheat. An unusually large breadth of land Is being devoted to snch purpose, the advance tariff of prices prompting to a most vigorous action in that direction. —Grand Ma un 2ieva } April 29. James Buchanan. A Harrisburg (Fa.) correspondent of the Pittsburgh ChrMikU writes: A curious incident occurred to me on my return from Philadelphia yesterday, to this dace. At Downington on aged man, with pro fuse flasenly while whiskers, hla long white hair hanging over his coat collar, entered the cars. Bib nat was broad in the rim, and showed a large-sized head under it; the face Is beginning to sink from its flabby round ness, and the skin is drawing lightly over the cheekbones; the large eyes, one of which Is slightly drawn aside, rolled around restlessly and nervously. Alone he entered the cars with a small portmanteau in hand. No one accompanied him. No one greeted him upon his entrance, though his uneasiness of man ner showed that he expected at least respect, if not adulation. Not a single salutation, either by aa offer of hands or any other token of recognition, was given. . The tremulous motion ol hands and head showed that ago was laving its hands heavily upon him. Sev enty-live years was superindacingthe debility which precedes paralysis. The step was feeble and the form bowed.j 1 sat for an hour a silent but attentive ob server of all that was transpiring about him. Gloomy, absorbed and silent he sat, as one who felt keenly that power had departed, and that with it had gone bis influence. Many of the passengers, and among them the soldiers on board, peered curiously at him, as they would at a wild animal of some unknown species in a menagerie. The soldiers after looking at him, would pass into the forward cars and curse him deeply and bitterly. Yet with all this dissatisfaction with his presence, there was no open insnlt by look, gesture or expression in his presence inflicted upon him. They respected too much the majestic sacred ness of the office he hod once tilled. The train at last reached Lancaster. A crowd was found surrounding the cars, as there always is at that place. The old man passed out as tremulously as be entered. No kind smile, no greeting, ho warm shake of the hand, no eyes beaming with delight, as they are wont ’to upon one who has borne the highest honors his country could confer, when those honors have remained green and beautiful until honor is laid down and life de parts. Shuflling slowly along the platform he only met one person who noticed him—a poor aged janitor of the tide rooms of the depot. Even this meeting was hailed with lively satisfaction. The * interview lasted one moment, andlike a fleeting shadow James Buchanan passed into the maiu street of Lan caster, solitary and sad amid his neighbors and those who were his friends in former years. What a commentary npou such a career I Is it not a just sentence? Will not history and posterity confirm its justice? How horrid it must’ he to undergo such a living death, to lead such a disentombed existence. Even this world contains many of the premonitory punishments of the next. I think this “cW m»m n of "Wheatland is sub jected to them.
