[Special Correspondence Chicago Tribnne.] Lvdiaxipolu, Mar 9,ISCC The brief and uncertain dispatches permit ted to come over the 'wires, in relation to the doings of the grand army on the Bapidan, hare only served to -whet the appetite of the already news-hungry public. Like so many Oliver Twists, they cry “give ns more!” I cannot help comparing the said public, at snch a moment, to a nest of yonng robins when the mother retnms, after a long ab sence from the nest, and they greet herby a general upstrelctiog of featherings necks and opening of immense yellow months, | from which proceed innumerable squeaks j and squawks, until they arc filled with dainty ! lid bits of bread or angle-worms. I paid especial attention to bird-nesting when yonng, which fact may account for thtTorigln I of the comparison. The news, though brief was considered brilliant and to be rejoiced 1 over. But the rejoicings were mostly re strained to unobtrusive chuckles af delight, and smoothing of chins In a way that noted immense satisfaction with everythin" Past experience of premature drumming and cannonading over rumored victories that turned out to be creations of idle reporters or defeats glossed over by bnngliu" commanders In carefully* worded dis“ patches, put an effectual quietus on all such frenzied demonstrations. The few whose brains are torpid until soaked in alcohol, and who only need a slight excuse, often none at all, to get gloriously drunk on, did get drank on Saturday night, and like the priestess of Apollo, at Delphi when the vapor rose, from their stomachs to their heads, they became oracular, and gatherin'” admiring little crowds around them gave any 1 number of reasons, good, bad, and iudlffer- i ent for the faith that was in them. A Well soaked faith it must have been too. These little mobs were especially* 6 be met with at “gardens” kept by gentlemen of German ex traction, where, as a sort of an accompani ment, the transmutation of ragged postage currency into a thin mahogany colored fluid, was rapid and long continued. If yon passed along the street, you would meet a dozen of the little coteries, door stone committees, every two or three blocks, and, passing rap idly by, your ear would catch a perfect mosaic of gumbled odds and ends of senten ces, each one rendered incoherent by the next one that followed from some other one who wonted to squeeze in the wordy product of the beverage he’d been imbibing. On the whole, the news was good, and cheerful countenances were the universal rule. One gets so tired of the endless reverberatlonsof email talk in his ears, that he envies the deaf man. who is so Insensible to all the hubbub and Lurry of life, and the crush of the storm of disagreeable sounds. ‘But the quieter and more numerous sort of ptoj-lc arc prayerfully waiting to rejoice with gb-d hearts, when these fleeting rumors that all’s well with the army, shill do proven to he the heralds of solid and substantial Tie* lory. There are many anxious hearts under these cheerful feces, tor oil feel that we cin not well afford another campaign like thatot the Peninsula. The dead heroes of tbe Chick ahominy, martyrs of McClellan’s cowardice and incompetency, seem to cry from the ground where they lie for vengeance, and prey God that the vengeance he nzt delayed till the nation’s “heartgrowssick with weary waiting,” and gives up the contest And the impression is general, that if Grant wins a great battle gloriously, and follsws It up suc cessfully, that tbe crisis will bare been safely passed, and that henceforward our battle scarred legions will have before them to tread only a broader, smoother way that conducts smilingly to a not distant peace. And so thinking, our people recognize the call for the men q! a hundred days as having been prompt ed by a wise forethought, and lend themselves with earnestness to the work of recruiting. Some forty companies have reported as lull, during the past week. I read with pride, in the columns of the Tribune, how the great Westanswers such nppealsto her patriotism. I>r. Holmes seems to nave anticipated such a cull in his poem in the Atlantic for February. “The Last Charge.” , Our State has kept up a steady stream of soldiers to the Iron! for two or three weeks p.' St. Many of them are re-enllsted veterans, and many of them new recruits. Some ten new regiments of infantry, from the 120 th to KOih inclusive, have gone; tbe 9th, 10th, llih and IRth regiments of carolly, all full to the maximum, went on Sunday, May Ist; and‘Saturday night last, closing up the rear oi the long line, came and wentibe 12th cav alry, 1,200 men, commanded by the gallant Cob Anderson, well known in this portion of the State under the soubriquet of “ The Fighting Preacher.” These regiments have been kept idle at home for some time, for want or horses. And now they go to tbe fli-jd nearly two-thirds of each regiment aimed with muskets only, and on foot, only asking a fair field to show the traitors in arms that the Northwest has a few more left of the sort that whipped them so often under Grant and Rosecrans. The United States Circuit. Conrt com menced its session last Tuesday. Judges Da vis and White on the bench. The latter gen tleman, Albert 8. White, is well known to many of the readers of the Tribune, and is the recently appointed IT. 8. District Judge of Indiana. He is giving good satisfaction to the legal profession and ail others concerned, and will prove that tbe appointment has not be en unwisely bestowed. A number of dis tinguished gentlemen and lawyers are in at tendance upon the court. Hon. Thomas A. Hendricks, among the rest. The cose of Athon vs Gov. Morton, excites some interest, and was the cause that brought Senator Hen dricks from Washington. As it may interest jour Indiana readers, I will briefly state the facts as I learn them. When 3 nines S. Athon the present Copperhead Secretary of-State, came into office, after the disastrous election in the fell of 1802, some little difficulty oc curred, arising, no doubt, from his desire to hinder and dehij tbe Executive Department in sending troops to the field, between him and the Governor, and the result was that Athon fefased to sign the com missions issued by Governor M. to tbe officers in the volunteer service. This pro ceeding, however, did not have any other effect than that of depriving Mr. Athon of the little fee of one dollar to which be is entitled for every commission passing through his office, for tbe Governor turned them over to Adjutant General Noble, who countersigned them, free of charge, and delivered them to the officers. This struck Dr. Athon all of a he.ip. Grieving for greenbacks, he.hecame morose, then pugnacious, and finally, ** insti gated by the devil, &c., he sues Governor Alorton In the- Common Fleas Court of this county for some three or four thousand dol lars of fees, due him, he claims, on commis sions issued. The Governor, not desiring to trust the matter in the bands of the gentle men who compose our Supreme Court, and knowing that if Athon was defeated below he would cany it there, by counsel, had the cause removed into the Federal .Court, and now, Senator Hendricks; descending from his dignified station in the Capitol of the nation, comes back to Indianapolis to lend his pettifogging powers to the engineering of a pile of greenbacks into Dr. Athon’s pocket; into the pocket of one of those Copperheads who bate them so terribly, and. talk by tbe hour, with deep sighs and* odudoub shakes of tbe bead about “depreci ated currency.” In a word, Hendricks and Athon want the cause remanded to tbe State Courts, and delivered over to the tender mer cies of Judge Perkiuß and his colleagues. The Court holds the matter under | Advise ment. This letter is already too long, and I will only add that Colonel Straight, of Libby Prison memory, with an extemporized hand ful of the Legion, dispersed three or four hundred armed Copperheads, down In Clay county, a few days ago. Thejvhad assembled to prevent the holding of a Union meeting, for the purpose of raising recruits. But they waked up the wrong passenger, when they -aroused CoL Streight, and when they found it out, which did not take them very lung, they incontinently skedaddled. Dot. A. Belting Convention. We care very little what action the factious individuals who are to meet at Clevdandon thcSlet instant, may take. The Kew York Titnts says of this Convention : «‘lts declared object is to assert independ ence of the Baltimore Convention, and its ulterior purpose Is doubtless to put an inde pendent candidate into the Held. It fs sign ed bv a motley collection of some fifty Indi viduals, most of whom have never, before been heard of, and all professing to act for ‘ the People’s Committee,* which Is as myth ical as the Egerian nymph. The reasons as sumed for this fantastic movement are that the one-term principle is consecrated by time, and that Baltimore * has not the essen tial conditions of a truly national conven tion, 1 Inasmuch as It Is very far from the geo graphical centre, and very , near the commer cial and political foci, and'lnasmuch, top, w tie mode of summoning the convention has bien wrong, and plenty of corruption will prevail We suppose the signers call them selves Union men, though there is not a word : in their prou ti nciamenio that denotes it, nor a semimenttbatit U not daily expressed by tie rankest Copperheads in the land. The plan of the present campaign In this direction is becoming more and more appa* rent There is no longer any dftubt In my mind concerning the matter. Twill tell yon how I put it up, and take the consequences Banks, like Sherman, started several months since lor »* Texas or hell,” Ho threw' his forces all along the coast of Texas, or unfor tified peninsulas and islands, and in such small towns as be could gain access to with out much opposition, with the avowed inten tion of invading the State to Its very core. Alter knocking about there for several months with no other result th*n simply turning our channel of trade with Mexico in another di rection, he became chagrined with his success or rather want of success, and in his wrath he declared he would enter the State by an other route. . ... it was, he commenced maturing hi* plans for the campaign In which he la now engaged. He returned to New Orleans, re called totbat point the principal portoln of his Texas invaders and immediately set about organizing for the Red River valley route. At his solicitations a large force was concentra ted at Little Bock and placed under the com mand of Steele,'and filtcen thousand men 'from Vicksburg, Natchez and other points on the Mississippi, were landed at the month of Red River, Now, for the movement and its objects, Steele was to march to Rea River, via Arka delphla and Washington, devastating the country and drive Gen. Price into Louainna or Texas. Hurlbut, or whovrver has com mand of the troops that were landed at Simms port, was to force Gen. Ta\lor back, destroy Fort DeEussy, and make bia way to Alexan dria, where he, Banks, was to form a junc tion with him, tin Franklin, Opelousas and 'Washington, and from thence pass np Red River Valley, both by land and water, and join Steele- at. Marshall, Texas;. Steele cap turing Jefferson, and Banks Shreveport on the route. At the same time a force w'as to go up the Ouachita to Monroe and from thence by land lo Shreveport. Each of these columns were to “pay their way” by «p --turing all the products of the country within their reach, destroying crops, farming uten sils. Ac., thus rendering the country through which they passed uninhabitable for the present, at least. This plan, It was supposed, would rid both Arkansas and Louisiana of the rebels. Arriving at Marshall, they would concen trate all their forces, and sweep through Teitii to Houston and Galveston. Thus far the plan has worked admirably, as they supposed. They have both continued to advance, with bnt little serious opposition, until they are within a few miles of tue Texas line. Generals Taylor and Price hare grad ually fallen back, as the enemy dciired, and one not acquainted with the preparations in store for the enemy, would naturally conclude, that they arc in a fair-way of carrying out their plans. But a day of reckoning is at Land, and 1 will bet myself against the nicest widow in the State of Texas, that the plans of the enemy will be frustrated before they can enter Texas. Nay, more, I will make the same bet that both columns now advancing in this direction, will bo whipped ont aud compelled to return before they can contam inate the soil of Texas. Who will take that bet? April 10.—The above was written last eve ning. General VonSteinwehr will command a brigade, instead of his old division, in the 11th Corps. General Howard has taken com mand of the 4th Corps, and-establishMhead quarters at Cleveland. Major General Newton went np to Cleveland on Saturday, to take command of Sheridan's old division, 4th Corps.? _ , Of that portion of the army at Huntsville, w InNorth Alabama, much is to be expected. Gen McPherson's headquarters are at Hunts ville, and Gen. The magnitude of McPherson's command proha “ij cave rise to thesistement that thearmies °i the Ohio and Cumberland were to be con solidated with Sherman's old army and the new organization called “the Army ot the Tennessee”—Sherman's favorite-name. Lieut. Col. and Provost Marshal. i Fremont and lodge Barnard. IN. Y. Correspondent Cincinnati Gazette.] I must go back for a moment to Judge Bar nard to aay—and I say it with reluctance, but believe it right to be known—that be is un derstood to have entered’into political nego tiations with General Fremont. I am sorry to say It, because I cannot quite get over my liking for the Pathfinder; but the evidence seems Indisputable. In the first pi ice, the Jfew Eativn. Gen, Fremont’s personal organ, has recently changed editors. Fitz Hugh Ludlow retires, and he retires principally, I fear, from dislike of the men with whom Fremont persists in surrounding himself The Barnard story la simply this: When he made his onslaught on the Evening Post, an article commenting with Just severity on hla conduct, Was written tor the Mw Jfytion, put in type, and the . paper sent to press, and a part of the edition struck off and pat la the boxes of the general agents. Gen. Fremont heard of it, and at 6 o’clock in the morning, sent down to the office and canceled the printed papers, withdrew the article, and the Aim Au tion appeared without any reference to Judge Barnard. Gen. Fremont said he would not hare hod the article published for a thousand dollars. Why ? The answer seems to be that Barnard is an agent of a Democratic Fremont coalition. Qow far it extends 1 cannot say, bnt this I know; It was arranged that at a meeting of Fremont’s friends, to be held at Cooper institute, with reference to the Presidency, Judge Barnard should preside 1 The arrangement, however, was so strenuously and Indignantly resisted by some , of Fremont’s Republican friends, that the plan was abandoned, oral least post poned, and no meeting has yet been held. 1 again say that I state these fact's regret fully; bnt they arc facts, and will not be da llied. And if Gen. Fremont cares to retain the affectionate confidence with which so large a portion of the anti-slavery party of the North regards him, be mustdiec4rd such associates as he has lately made the sharers ol hla political coumcls.
