THE SALOON INTEREST. fleeting of the" Association of Liberal Minded Citizens.'’ Ilio Brewers’ sßoo—Mr. Wider Ex plains—Pulling SIOO Wioro it Will do tile Must flood. Tito Association of Liberal-Minded Oitlzond (Vorcln Froisinlngor Buerger) bold tboir regular weekly mooting yesterday afternoon, at Swiss Hall, No. 45 North Clark street, Francis A. Hoff mann, Jr., tbo President, in tho chair. In tho absence of tho Secretory, Mr. Q. A. Korn, tho Vice-President, road tho minutes of tho last, mooting. Several gontlomon who had previously paid thoir initiation feo, wore elected members of tho Association. Iho Committoo on Browers, in regard to a sub eldy of $2,000, reported that tho brewers had paid them tho sum of SBOO, all tho money thoy had in tho treasury at tho time, and that thoy promised to do bettor In tho future. Mr. J. Zcnicsohok moved that tho report bo accepted and tho brewers thanked for their lib erality. Mr. K. Metz moved that tho report bo not’nc cepted, ns tho brewers had promised to pay $2,000. To replenish the treasury, ho would sug gest that members bo assessed $5 each, and that tho pittance of 8800 bo returned to tho brewers. Mr. Zonioschok thought Mr, Metz was un grateful, since tho brewers had given them all thoy had, and promised to give moro, Thoy should not bo too proud or sensitive. Tho mem bers of tho Association would have plenty of op portunities yet to spend thoir money before tho close of the campaign. Thoy should accept every donation, however small, come from whore it may. After considerable debate, Mr. ZonioachoVa motion was adopted. ' The Judiciary Committee reported tho names of several saloon-keepers who had boon fined through the carelessness of thoir attorney, Mr. Wilder, which fines had now to bo paid by the Association. Henry Jlatbiou, after staling that tho society was organized in tho interest of tho saloon keepers, said that thoy should now show that they woro in earnest, and meant to do something for the good of tho cause. Ho hold in his hand a little resolution, which was not written by 4 |Littlo Joe” of the tSiaats-Zeitnng. The resolu tion was to tho effect that tho Association should appoint a committee, oud got up a petition to ho presented to tho Common Council, that saloon keepers bo allowed to keep thoirsaloons open on Sundays, and that thoy pledge themselves to* keep respectable houses, and keep thoir win dow* closed. Tho Personal Liberty Longue, he said, had gotten up a petition, signed by 30,000 citizens, which would also bo presented to tbo Council. Ho was satisfied that tho bill would pass the Council, as ho had interviewed no lose than nineteen Aldermen. Mr. Korn deprecated such talk as this, because the reporters would put it into the newspapers. Mr. Mathiou could see no reason why they fihoiUd ho so bashful, or why thoy should be ofraid of the papers. Thoy woro demanding nothing but thoir rights. Tnolr cause was just, and, therefore, thoy had nothing to fear. Other members expressed thoir opinions on the subject, and most of them woro confident that the present Acting-Mayor was in favor of allowing them to keep thoir saloons open on Sundays. r After a long debate, Mr, Mathiou’s resolution was laid on tho table, Mr. Wilder, the attorney of tbo Association. - I m Wao ..P re,JOll *'» * n m caaurod slops, with a copy of The liunoNE iu bis hand, marobod up to tbo speaker s desk. Permission being granted him to make a speech, bo opened The Tribune. which bo bold in Luh band, and road an extract from the report of last week’s proceedings, cen suring him for tbo non-performance of bis du ties. And then bo went on to say that this charge, reported as it was by the most promi nent newspaper iu tbo city, did him infinite injury, and bo could not see bow 'Mr. Korn, the Vice-President, who bad made the charges, could have boon so cruel oa thus wan tonly to destroy tbo reputation of a young and rising lawyer. If members of the society bad ever boon before tbo police courts, and soon tbo dimcultioa with which a lawyer was continually beset and surrounded, those charges would nev er have boon preferred. All those that aro ac quainted with him could testify bow faithfully bo performed his duties on all occasious. Those cases had not been neglected by him, but by tbo Catties themselves, iu not giving their boil onds. Mi*. Korn felt rather put out by Mr. Wilder’s remarks, ami said that that gentleman could have saved his remarks, as they had boon entire ly unnecessary, It wan wrong to expect him to bo a lawyer and give all his time to tho society. Alter a lengthy debate it was decided that tho society pay the linos. Mr. Wilder agreeing to pay half of .Jr. Kuonzlo's tine. J } TaH decided to have two men to distribute constitutions of tho Association in American and Irish saloons. Mr. Hoffmann asked Mr. Korn to take tho chan*, so that ho might make a few remarks. Ho commenced by saying that it was important to have tho newspapers on their side, because they had groat influence. Even tho worst man could bo elected President of the United States wun the united aid of tho press. As a practical politician, and a member of a sensible society, no should do everything in his power to deserve mat support. There woro about 30,000 Scandi navians m this city, many of whom woro sup porting the temperance cause, but there wore also others who woro liberal, and would go witii them, provided they wore properly influenced by a paper that would show them tho real objects of thonroßontmovomont.
