0 FINANCE AND TRADE. a Revival of Trade Manifested by Ac tivity at the Banks. Currency and Discounts for Coun try Banks. A Buoyant Feeling Prevalent Among All Classes. Produce Business Chiefly for Future Delivery. FINANCIAL. Ms bank clesrings for Sstorday were only |4,377,- >OO. corresponding perfectly with what wo aaiil In relation to there of Friday, Oct. I. They show, with the small stocks of (train in store. that during the last month there has been no speculation in cereals, pro visions, and other farm product*. A few month* ago, when thpro were 10,000,000 of bushels of corn anil wheal in store, balances on the let of Ibo month were two or three times what they are now. Wuilo receipts have been heavy, (hi produce has been shipped direct ly to the seaboard without any attempt to run enruers or other evil and demoralizing practices too rife by far fa months past. The calls upon Cankers both from city and country customers during the week past have been large, and especially those from the country indicate heavy in vestments In farm products. The first effect will be Immense receipts of them In the Immediate future and ere long a return of the currency, now flowing out ward, from country merchants am) others in pay ment of notes and are units duo here. The a live movement Is both healthy and highly encouraging. Thus far the fall trade In mercantile ami manufac turing staples shipped to the country and In farm products received hero and shipped Eastward bids fair to largely uacfs.l the business of any previous year la the his tory of Chicago. Tho extensive building operations going on all over tho city should also be taken into tho account when iti financial affairs are considered. They Indicate an entire confidence on the part of our people in tho growth and the substantial prosperity of the city. Tho Dank of California resumed business on Baturday. Till* will tend to restore con fidence and stimulate business all over the I’ncifie Coast, and wilt 1*» a matter of con gratulation there atfil on this side of the mountains. j Too Dank of Nevada, with L ulls McLean ns President, goes Into operation to-day (Monday). Mr. McLean has for many years been one of ibo leading bu'duess tnen and capitalists on the Pacific Const, and this name will give the bank great prestige ami Influence. It is owned and managed by what are known in San Fran cisco as "the Flood A O'Dilen crowd,” and in spite, perhaps, of - the wish of its owners, is regarded as tho rival of tho Dank of California. Each of these banks has a paid-up capital of |5.0U»,000 in gold, and tho wonder is how two smh mammoth institutions, with tho many other largo public and private banks in San Francisco, can And profita ble business in a Htatc whoso entire population is scarcely any more than twice that of Chicago, Dut the mineral ami agricultural resources of tho Pacific Coa?t arc immense, and aro rapidly increasing. Practically, they aro without limit, and hcuco tho movements of capitalists thereaway can scarcely Iw Judged by any rules drawn from tho number of population and tho business in corresponding circumstances on this sldo of tbc mountains. Thu rate of discount (o customers at tho banks was ts usnal 10 per cent. Call and short time loans with approved collaterals could be had at somo of tho banks at PiSR per cent, and on tiovcmmeula 3 per cent would be gladly accepted. Street rales nominal at 8&13 per cent, with very little doing. Exchange rules weak at 50.7.75 rents per SI,OOO. It was a shade firmer at these figures on Saturday. roIIEIU.V EXCHANGE. The loading produce markets wore rather Irregular on Saturday, and yet steadier than the (wo preceding days, there being less pressure to settle up trades for September and October. The business for this month that Is not yet arranged for will probably bo squared off In a leisurely manner, & large share of it being de ferred Into the last half. The trading ran more largely lulo November in grain, and the year In pro visions, wilh not much doing for shipment. A little chartering was done by parties who have received grain on contract, and do not care to place it on the market bore. There was a good demand for freight-room to proceed to Mil* waukee, and carriers were firm in their views, holding that an advance in rates must bo obtained now if at all this season. The attitude of shippers was uot favora ble (o amo In quotations, and it appears probable that there will he little improvement until the special insurance rates come into effect in November. The dry-goods market wore a quieter look than dur ing the earlier days of the week, though for a Hatur doy the volume of sales van more than ordinarily lib eral. There were no important iluctuatloue in values, steadiness being a characteristic of tho market. Groceries were moving on a satisfactory scale st prices not materially different from those current at the beginning of the week, fair activity was appar ent, both in tho staple and side-goods departments, and tho feeling was uniformly firm. In domestic dried fruits there was hut a limited movement, and values were again somewhat unsettled. Apples sud peaches especially were dull and weak. There was • well sus tained demand for imported varieties, and prices ■how a hardening tendency. Fish wore unchanged In value. All salt-water descriptions are held with pro nouncsd firmness. Tho butter and cheese markets presented substantially the same characteristic* as for a number of days previous. None of tho features of the bagging, leather, coal, and wood markets showed sny marked change. Oils were lu good local and country demand at fully former quotations, the general market ] resenting a firm tone. .ns , IHS .100 m Lumber continue* active, aud tho general market la Arm. Tlio receipts of hogs were fair, with a slightly easier feel ing in the market, but the tone of the market for prod uct was net dependent on Iho current supply of the raw material. It Is now understood that stocks ore small, the recent snspeuEfon of summer packing, in the hope of Idling down prices on hogs, having re sulted in n rapid clearing out of stocks, which are now worked down qulto low. Then it seems to ho ac cepted as a fact that the next packing season will open and cloic a mouth later than usual, ns farmers aril] naturally desiro to use nu immense coni crop for fattening, and the number of hog* is small, the otlUial returns of six Western States giving a falling oil" of something iikn 1,220,du0 head, Thu tendency of this la to cause a continuous strengthening in the nearer deliveries, under Iho pros pect of a short supply in the early winter, while the late options nro firm, though not relatively so alron;;. There is not much disposition to take stock in theory of a “short hog crop," because tlio same cry has be n raised in former years, and was not Justitied hy the event, lint a short present stock of product, with a good demand for whut is left, are well-recognized fuels; and a late commencement of tho packing-season is generally regarded oa a certainty. Far tlio latter class, owing to the existence of a more than ordinarily good demand, former prices have been pret ty well sustained, the poorer grades only being quol ably lower. The Eastern markets, as well as our own, have been overstocked, and a general and material shrinkage In values there Is also noted, New York, Al bany, Buffalo, and Pittsburg being from a X&.Ve lower than at the close of tbo previous week. At this season of the year the States lying east of us fiiruUh nearly enough stock to supply their own cities snd towns, and during October our receipts of shipping beeves should bo kept down to the minimum. The week’s business was chiclly at for poor to good fat cows; at |2.76'5;i.50 fur Texans; it $ t.OCQ 3.7 A for stock cattle; snd at $4.0d(55,00 for shipping steers. Saturday was a dull day. Shippers did llttio and the demand from other sources also was restricted. During Friday and Saturday a considerable amount of stock was shipped on Hast iu first hands. If tbo ad rices from below may bo relied upon tbo parties so shipping will find that they have not acted wisely. When the regular shippers stand aloof the “ experi menters ” may safely conclude that there is no margin of profit for them. The market closed dull and heavy, with many cattle left in the yards.
