There continue* to be an active demand for Gov* eminent bond*, nod an Improvement In prices. Hi) (MO. There waa tome fluctuation in coneola, the open* lug rate of 05 7*lo yielding I*lo, to 05*», hutre* covering at the close to 05 7*lo. During the week consol* hare advanced from 04 11*10 to 05 7*lo, a gain of and an Indication of Increasing confl* deuce In the London money market. Consols are now very near the quotation nt this time last year, when they were 00. The paper circulation of the Hank of England is now larger than It haa ever been before, The London T\tn*s explain* that when there I* a want of confidence, and credit I* withheld, the circulation of bank notes always in* creases, but the Increase in the return for Oct, 25 I* remarkable, the total being over £30,000,000. the highest ever reached. In the middle of May, 18(30. when the bank reserve was under half a million, tho notes lo circulation only reached a total of £20.000.000. Tho largo extra require* merits of Scotland have, no doubt, been the main cause of the present expansion. In 1857. when the bank reserve of notes declined to about ill, 000,000, owing to tho municipal dlfllcultles ex* perlcnced In that year, tho bank note* in circulation barely reached a total of £11,500,000. The Timet thinks the maximum requirements of (he country have now been reached, and notes and gold will begin to flow back from the Province* to the bank. The London quotation for silver advanced 1-1(1, to 00 7-10 pence per ounce. The conference of tho Latin Union is now In session at Paris. Its arrangements to substitute silver coins for the fractional Italian paper currency, and the Increase from 400,000 to 000,000 ounces In the sliver taken this week by tho United btatcs Trcssury bave no duubt had their effect on the market. The Chicago banks reported an Improvement In the demand for loans, with a surplus still remain ing of loanable funds. There were rumors of more logo, but noth* tng definite stated. It would be a good thing for our wheat trade in the West if wo could Imre a vigorous clearing out of the No. 2 in store hero. It ought to move before the dose of navigation, but soch a movement can scarcely be honed fur. .So long as our No. 3 can bo bought at 10c below No. 2, and sold at only Aft.Oc below It, buyers will nnt* nrally prefer the lower grade, and the higher will bo chiefly purchased on speculative account, lo be carried against rales made fur future delivery. The leading produce markets were rather tame yesterday, and somewhat Irregular. Provisions were extremely dull, and easier, though'hugs were quoted firmer. '1 here was a good deal doing In wheat, at lower prices. Corn was dull early, but a good shipping demand for rejected supervened. Oats wero alow and easy, rye was 14c higher, and barley again on the down grade, whilo freights were stronger. The general feeling seemed to bo In favor of a further reduction in tho prices of produce. Provisions and wheat are In big stock, nml many are afraid of the outlook for corn, the arrivals of No. 2 this winter being expected to bo imicls larger than tho demand. Much tho same appears to bo tho caso wltn barley, tbu consump tion of which has recently been much decreased by the substitution of corn In brewing processes. Domestic and foreign dry goods were generally quiet. There was some departmental activity, but the general market presentud tbu quiet appearance usual to the season. Prices ruled steady. Jn tho grocery market a good business waa doing. Prices wore generally firm. Sugars remained dull but were held an ‘io higher, in sympathy with the Eastern market. Codecs wero firm, as were also teas, spices, and rlcc. There was little change in the dried fruit market. Foreign varieties were moving on u generous rcale, while domestics ruled quiet. Fish were minted steady under a moderate demand. No prlco-clmiiges were developed hi the bagging, leather, coal, and wood markets. Putter was slightly firmer. Cheese remained dull at for* mcr quotations. Oils wore unchanged, excepting linseed, In which there was an advance of 2c,— now quoted at Me for row and 03c for boiled. The advance is the result of a combination among the crushers throughout tbe United flutes. Leaf to bacco Is active uud advancing. Havana leaf has ouvanccd 10c. The lumber market was steady, At the docks tbc cargoes sold slowly, and at tbo yards trade was equal to tbo recent avorngu. Tho wool market was quid. Orders cuma In occasionally and are promptly attended 10, tho dealers having a wull assorted slock to soil from, and there is little varia tion In prices. Droom-corn Is in lair request uud easy. Needs were In moderate demand and gen erally firm, owing lo limited offerings, The bay market waa again quid, and tho out look after tho closing season of lake navigation Is not considered very promising. Tho crop seems to bavo been a largo one East as welt as West. Hides wero steady. Potatoca wero firm, und ready aale when good enough lo ship.
